Caught up in “The Queen’s Gambit” hype and want to learn chess? Join Nolan DeMott, as he takes you on the beginning of your chess journey. Learn the basics of chess (how the pieces move, how to set up the board, basic rule nuances, etc) as well as fundamental chess principles (piece development, controlling the center of the board). This one time session will get you started on what you need to know in order to start playing chess and checkmating your opponents.
Learn how to play chess.
Setting up the board properly, adhering to the rules of the game (i.e. how different pieces move), understanding basic rule nuances such as castling, and the difference between checkmate and stalemate.
Understand most fundamental chess principles:
Proper piece development (i.e. minor pieces before major pieces), piece values, controlling the center, undefended pieces, trading when ahead and basic tactical ideas (i.e. pins, skewers, forks).
Nolan DeMott is an experienced Chess player with over 12,000 games played on chess.com, having achieved a rating of 1900. Nolan started playing Chess at age 5 and started competing in tournaments soon after. In elementary school, he led his elementary school to a Top 4 finish at the Hurvitz Cup a regional team chess tournament, hosted by The Massachusetts Chess Association. While Nolan decided early on to not pursue playing the game at a more serious level, he's always found the time to play recreationally and teach those who are looking to improve their game.
