    6:30 PM

Enjoy Historical fiction? Please come to our book club, A Page in Time.

This month's topic of discussion is The Life She was Given by Ellen Marie Wiseman.

Summary: On a summer evening in 1931, Lilly Blackwood glimpses circus lights from the grimy window of her attic bedroom. Lilly isn't allowed to explore the meadows around Blackwood Manor. She's never even ventured beyond her narrow room. Momma insists it's for Lilly's own protection, that people would be afraid if they saw her. But on this unforgettable night, Lilly is taken outside for the first time--and sold to the circus sideshow.

    First Lady of the Revolution
    2:00 PM

    Film Screening

Join us in Bernheim Hall for a screening of Spark Media’s latest documentary feature First Lady of the Revolution. Supported by Alabama Humanities Foundation and sponsored in the state by Montgomery City-County Public Library, the film has garnered ten awards since its Sidewalk Film Festival premiere, including two prestigious Audience Awards.

Written and directed by Emmy Award-winning filmmaker Andrea Kalin, “First Lady of the Revolution” traces the life of Henrietta Boggs, Southern Belle and remarkable first wife of legendary Costa Rican President Jose? Figueres, and her wildly improbable path that profoundly changed a small Central American country. Still active at the age of 98, Boggs recounts her decade long journey of activism, exile and political upheaval which ultimately led to lasting progressive reforms in Costa Rica that still stand today. Among the many groundbreaking reforms that occurred under President Figueres’ watch, women were given the right to vote and hold public positions long denied to them, and the Costa Rican Armed Forces were abolished, the first time in history a nation has disbanded its standing military.

Admission is free. For more information, please call 251-208-7097.

“As a filmmaker I’ve witnessed the grizzly impact of war; from the refugee camps in Syria to gang-controlled barrios in Colombia,” said Kalin, “Abolishing the army was a powerful and bold idea that changed the course of Costa Rica’s history and reshaped its identity. It’s an inspiration to people all over the world.”

Founded by director/producer Andrea Kalin in 1989, Washington D.C.-based Spark Media specializes in producing trailblazing documentaries and outreach initiatives that highlight the rich diversity of the world’s culture and achievements. With almost 90 international awards, Spark Media strives to both inform and inspire audiences with stories that are compelling, entertaining and real.
