    “Duke. George Duke" featuring The Cedric Brooks Project  

    MOJO (Mystic Order of Jazz Obsessed) brings its Jazz Jambalaya to the Library. Enjoy an evening of live jazz!

    A prime mover in the West Coast jazz "fusion revolution," the five-time Grammy-winning musician gleefully jumps from jazz to fusion to funk to rock.  "I’ve always been a musical gumbo," said George Duke, keyboard pioneer, composer, singer-songwriter and record producer. 

    Duke's gumbo bowl of music style will be performed by The Cedric Brooks Project featuring Carlos Vizoso (saxophone), Nya (guitar), Cory Johnson (bass), Steve Jacobs (drums), Mac McGee & Shelley Brown (vocals) and Brooks (keyboard) at MOJO's January Jazz Jambalaya.  

    Tickets can be purchased at the door; $10 for members, $15 for guests and $12 for students/Military with ID. Special Snowbird discount, $10 with ID.

    FOL Annual Meeting - Dr. Wayne Flynt

    Perfect Time to Join the Friends of the Mobile Public Library

    The 2019 Friends Annual Meeting begins with a reception at 5:30 p.m. with guest speaker, Dr. Wayne Flynt’s presentation on “Pulitzers and Politics: The Best and Worst of Alabama History” beginning at 6:45 p.m.

    Dr. Flynt is Professor Emeritus in the Department of History at Auburn and an award-winning author of 13 books, including Poor But Proud: Alabama’s Poor Whites, Alabama in the Twentieth Century and Mockingbird Songs: My Friendship with Harper Lee. His research focuses on Southern culture, Alabama politics, Southern religion, education reform and poverty. In 1993 he was the subject of an Alabama Public Television documentary.

    Books will be provided for sale; checks and cash only.

    Memberships are required and can be purchased at the door. Memberships ranges from $30 for individual/family to $500 for a partner. Since the Friends is a 501© (3) nonprofit organization, memberships are tax deductible.

    Maurice Sendak Memorial Exhibition

    50 Years, 50 Works, 50 Reasons

    The Ben May Main Library will be hosting the Maurice Sendak Memorial Exhibition, a retrospective of original works sure to delight both children and adults alike. The author and illustrator of more than 50 children’s books, Sendak is best known for the 1963 children’s classic, Where the Wild Things Are.

    Where the Wild Things Are has been adapted into an animated short, a feature length film, and an opera. This classic tale has sold over 19 million copies and translated into many, different languages. It is frequently voted the number one picture book by several publications, including School Library Journal, and was also awarded the 1964 Caldecott Medal Award.

    The Exhibit is comprised of 50 original works by Sendak from his earliest pencil drawings done while in high school to a bronze sculpture, presented to the author as a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Society of Illustrators.

    In addition to housing the Exhibit, the Library will offer special programming in relation to the Exhibit for both children and adults. An illustrator workshop, themed story times, crafts, movies, and a custom built children’s area featuring Max’s boat from Where the Wild Things Are are on tap during the Exhibit’s display.
