Art Exhibit

Follow the yellow brick road to the Ben May Main Library! This exhibit features original illustrations from the first edition of The Wonderful Wizard of Oz published in 1900. Go on a visual adventure along with Dorothy, Toto, and all your favorite characters from the book. 

P.H. Polk Photography Exhibit

West Regional Library is hosting “Unframed Images,” an exhibition featuring 14 reproductions from the works of renowned African American photographer Prentice Herman “P. H.” Polk. Housed in Tuskegee Institute’s archives, the images have been exhibited at leading museums and galleries throughout the country. His photographs depict early 20th-century African Americans from all walks of life, including Martin Luther King Jr., George Washington Carver and farmworkers in rural Alabama.

Books By & About African Americans

The National African American Read-In is a groundbreaking effort to encourage communities to read together, centering on African American books and authors. It was established in 1990 by the Black Caucus of the National Council of Teachers of English to make literacy a significant part of Black History Month. This initiative has reached more than 6 million participants around the world.     

Due to the pandemic, the Mobile Public Library has decided to host a reading challenge to take the place of our Annual AAH Read In event. Customers will register on BEANSTACK and win badges for every hour of reading completed. The challenge concentrates on books by and about African Americans.

Call or come by any library location for suggestions on tiitles.

A Candid Photography Contest

Contest is offered in partnership with the Alabama Contemporary Art Center. Submissions must be entered by midnight on Sunday, February 28, and winners will be announced on Monday, March 22. Full details about the contest and entry are available online at: mobilepubliclibrary.org/contest. Both amateur and professional photographs welcome. 

Winning photographs will articulate the theme “Everyday Mobile,” reflect the tone and technique of P.H. Polk’s photography and be a black and white, candid photograph containing one or more people. Photographs will be displayed in our virtual gallery on our website. Top Winner will receive a $50 Visa gift card and a swag bag of items donated by businesses and organizations in the Mobile Arts Community. Two honorable mentions will receive a swag bag.

Story Quest

A Story Quest is an outdoor reading adventure that encourages family interaction and social distancing!  Have a family outing. Keep a safe distance. Read a great story. Take a craft home.

Special Guest Dr. Clavicle of the Mobile Medical Museum

Join us under the oaks on the Scott Street side of Ben May Main Library for a special outdoor event. Dr. Clavicle of the Mobile Medical Museum will be a special guest. He will share a special story and demonstrate how to make a craft.Craft bags will be available to take home from the event. In addition to the story and craft there will be other fun outdoor activities and games. Please bring your own chair or blanket to sit on, and join us as we practice safe distancing!
