Presented by Yogi Steven Russell of Becoming Sound Yoga
Follow up with true Singing Bowl Meditation Video (wordless) with Yogi Steven which may be found here.
We hear about self-care, mindfulness and meditation practices more often these days. These positive practices have been in use for thousands of years to bring lives into balance. He Wrote That?!: A Virtual Lecture-in-Song Presented by Pianist/Singer/Narrator Fred Miller
Premieres on May 1 at 2pm. Continues to be Available to watch via the Library's website through May 31
No Registration needed!
As in most professional fields, American Popular Song has a constellation of “stars” who became as famous as the songs they wrote: Gershwin, Kern, Porter, Berlin, Rodgers. However, the golden years of Tin Pan Alley/Broadway/Hollywood boast so many song standards that it would be impossible to know all the outstanding creative names on the sheet music title pages. Do you recognize the name Don Raye? Gene De Paul? Tom Adair? Matt Dennis? Jack Lawrence? Remember Johnny Burke? Harry Woods ring any bells? Probably not, unless one is a fanatical denizen of Tin Pan Alley´s numerous, inviting doorways. He Wrote That?! dramatizes the fact that without the six gentlemen mentioned, the following songs would never have been:
Fred Miller’s Lecture-in-Song series comprise a series of solo programs, each an historical, anecdotal and musical profile of some great personality or important aspect of American Popular Song. These Lectures are delivered by singer/pianist/narrator Miller at the piano, and each reflects his lifetime passion and appreciation for great music. He studied classical piano in his hometown of Albuquerque from ages 7-15 and through the Seventies and Eighties, Miller studied and absorbed the life and times and songs of nearly all the great American composers and lyricists who thrived during Broadway & Hollywood’s Golden Age between the two World Wars. In 1987, he founded Silver Dollar Productions in order to produce operettas, dramas, musicals and small cabarets. Silver Dollar Productions required ensemble casts, props, costumes and, most significantly, the challenges of publicity and selling tickets, and for a dozen busy years, the company presented an unbroken string of varied and highly lauded performances.
The Library shares information, represents all views, and adheres to the fundamental values of the American Library Association: Equity, Diversity, Inclusion. Historically, the impact of an individual's actions, which may have been culturally accepted at the time, may be viewed differently today.

Shipwrecks and Lifesavers: The Formation of the U.S. Coast Guard Live Zoom Presentation by Historian Mary Rasa
In honor or Memorial Day, this lecture highlights the history of the U.S. Coast Guard through its predecessor organizations from colonial days to 1915. Two organizations merged to form the Coast Guard: the U.S. Revenue Cutter Service and the U.S. Life-Saving Service. The Revenue Cutter Service is the oldest federal sea service as it predates the US Navy with its founding in 1790. The US Life-Saving Service built its first stations in New Jersey and many of its structures are still standing, the oldest of which is in Monmouth County.
This session will be conducted on Zoom and is free of charge. Registration and internet access are required to attend. Register below to receive emailed information on how to access the presentation. Registration closes on Monday, May 23 at noon; Zoom access link will be emailed after 4:00 pm that day.

Follow up with true Singing Bowl Meditation Video (wordless) with Yogi Steven which may be found here.
We hear about self-care, mindfulness and meditation practices more often these days. These positive practices have been in use for thousands of years to bring lives into balance. Stimulation of brain waves brings focus to stress relief. You may find that using singing bowls will help calm thoughts, relieve tension, and help you become more conscious of your breathing. This consciousness may promote a sense of inner calm and relaxation.

How Did They Die? Deaths of Famous People: Live Zoom Presentation - Not for the Faint of Heart
Presented by Greg Caggiano
Lots of people get famous for what they do in life, but what about what comes after? Join historian Greg Caggiano for a presentation that examines (with plenty of humor!) the circumstances surrounding certain historical figures' historical deaths, ranging from Henry VIII to Napoleon, from Marie Curie to Christopher Columbus and several others. In examining the details of a death, more than a little life emerges! NOTE: in dissecting some historical details, the presentation will get anatomically specific—faint of heart historians be warned! Be prepared for some dark humor too.
Greg Caggiano is a published author, historian, lecturer, and consultant. He holds a degree in history from New Jersey City University and NJ State teaching certifications in history and elementary education. Since 2014, Greg has worked as an instructor for Brookdale Community College in their Lifelong Learning department and as a field guide for their Ocean Institute on Sandy Hook, which focuses on local marine life, maritime history, and the history of the U.S. Military’s presence at Fort Hancock. In his spare time, he has served on the Board of Directors of two museums: the Proprietary House in Perth Amboy, and most recently the Atlantic Highlands Historical Society, housed at the Strauss Mansion Museum. A firm believer in volunteering and giving back to the community, he has helped fundraise tens of thousands of dollars for historic preservation over the years.
This session will be conducted on Zoom and is free of charge. Registration and internet access are required to attend. Register below to receive emailed information on how to access the conversation. Registration closes on June 6 at noon; Zoom access link will be emailed after 4:00 pm that day.

Historic Wedding Dresses: Live Zoom Presentation
The magnificent exhibit of wedding dresses takes you on a journey of fashion from the Victorian Era, mid-19th century (1837-1901); to the Edwardian Era, early 19th century (1901-1910), to current times.
The dresses highlight the delicate hand-embroidered tulle, intricate patterns of tatted lace; machine made netting and lace, and ready-to-wear gowns. The gowns reflect influences from World War I and II, the Jazz Age, and beyond. A progression of styles from the rigid bone-corseted bodices of the early dresses to the relaxed fit of modern dresses will be explained. The lines of fashion are often blurred. There are historical references in the design, such as the high banded collar of Victorian times, or the Empire style, made famous by Josephine Bonaparte, the 18th century Empress of France. Details about the restoration of the dresses will be explained by a professional garment restorer.
The beautifully curated exhibit, which is sponsored by the Shrewsbury Historical Society, represents several women and families local to the Shrewsbury area. Behind each dress, there is a story of interest to share with the viewing audience.
Presenters will be
Don Burden, President of the Shrewsbury Historical Society, Former Mayor Borough of Shrewsbury
Robin Blair, Vice President of Shrewsbury Historical Society, Docent and Exhibit Co-coordinator
Judi Buncher*, Stylist and Garment Restorer. Ms Buncher has Fine Arts degree from Georgian Court College and is founder of the Fiber Arts Guild at Allaire Village.
This magnificent presentation will be on display to enjoy in person at Eastern Branch Library through the end of June.
This session will be conducted on Zoom and is free of charge. Registration and internet access are required to attend. Register below by noon on June 8; the access link will be emailed that same afternoon.
