The perfect addition to our 100th Birthday Celebration - a BookMark created by YOU!
Every Branch Every Resident is invited to help the Monmouth County Library celebrate our BIG 100!
Be sure to watch this page for updates, events, and new giveaways throughout the year!

The New Jersey Social Justice Remembrance Coalition (NJSJRC) has, on exhibit, soil collected from the site of the only recorded lynching in New Jersey, of Samuel "Mingo Jack" Johnson. The vessel will be on display at the Eastern Branch Library in Shrewsbury through June 15th, and at the Headquarters Library in Manalapan through July 30th. The vessel will be housed permanently at the historic T. Thomas Fortune Cultural Center in Red Bank, while other vessels will travel throughout the state.
In partnership with the Equal Justice Initiative (EJI) in Montgomery, Alabama, the NJSJRC asks viewers to join in bearing witness to this personal and community tragedy, and to reflect on actions we can take today to end the ongoing legacy of racial violence and inequality. The Community Remembrance Collection Project gathers soil at lynching sites to display in exhibits bearing the victims' names. The NJSJRC is linked with partnering communities nationwide to document and memorialize sites of enslavement, racial terror, lynching and segregation, for the purpose of fostering meaningful dialogue about race and justice today.
The NJSJRC is an interfaith, multi-ethnic group of individuals and organizations throughout the state who have come together to ensure that the residents of New Jersey are aware of historical incidents of racial bias. Learn more by going to www.njremembrance.org.
The Equal Justice Initiative website offers many useful and free resources, including lesson plans, films, oral histories, and informative articles, at EJI.org/reports.

Stimulation of brain waves brings focus to stress relief. You may find that using singing bowls will help calm thoughts, relieve tension, and help you become more conscious of your breathing. Need more information? Drop by Library Headquarters in Manalapan during scheduled dates/times to speak with other Bridge enthusiasts.
From Wikipedia: Duplicate Bridge is the most widely used variation of contrat bridge in club play. It is called duplicate because the same bridge deal (i.e., the specific arrangement of the 52 cards into the four hands) is played at each table and scoring is based on relative performance. Every hand is played in compeitition with others playing identical cards and the element of skill is hightened while that of chance is reduced.

The number one cause of preventable death after injury is bleeding. The Stop the Bleed® program was “launched in October of 2015 by the White House, Stop the Bleed® is a national awareness campaign and a call to action. Stop the Bleed® is intended to cultivate grassroots efforts that encourage bystanders to become trained, equipped, and empowered to help in a bleeding emergency before professional help arrives. No matter how rapid the arrival of professional emergency responders, bystanders will always be first on the scene. A person who is bleeding can die from blood loss within five minutes, so quickly stopping the bleeding is critical. Those nearest to someone with life threatening injuries are best positioned to provide immediate care if they are equipped with the appropriate training and resources.”
That is why the American College of Surgeons' wants to help train you how to Stop the Bleed®. No prior experience is needed to take this course. Anyone can learn the lifesaving skills needed to help bleeding patients until medical professionals arrive.
Certified STB Instructor and EMT Connor Crafton-Tempel (they/them) will present this hands-on, hour long course, which is free for registered participants. Connor has been a New Jersey State Certified Emergency Medical Technician since August 2017, after they graduated from the Jersey Shore University Medical Center EMT program. They have ridden for two 9-1-1 agencies and a medical transportation agency, and graduated in May 2021 with a BA in Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Management from Rowan University.
Certification will be awarded upon successful completion of this hands-on course.

We hear about self-care, mindfulness and meditation practices more often these days. These positive practices have been in use for thousands of years to bring lives into balance. Stimulation of brain waves brings focus to stress relief. You may find that using singing bowls will help calm thoughts, relieve tension, and help you become more conscious of your breathing. This consciousness may promote a sense of inner calm and relaxation.

The number one cause of preventable death after injury is bleeding. The Stop the Bleed® program was “(l)aunched in October of 2015 by the White House, Stop the Bleed® is a national awareness campaign and a call to action.

Love, Death and Betrayal: The Story of Anna and Vito Genovese presented by Historian John Barrows
Presented by the Monmouth County Historical Association Co-Sponsored by the Monmouth County Library
They were both married with children when they fell in love, but they had to be together, no matter what. She was the ultimate mafia wife, but in other ways was so very different from women of her time. He was the most feared gangster in America, but she was not afraid, and when she was a woman scorned, she proved her courage and faced the mafia’s ultimate penalty for violating the southern Italian code of silence. They lived in Monmouth County twice, which he loved, and she loathed. You don’t have to wait for the new mini-series to learn about Monmouth County’s most fascinating mob queen!
John Barrows, editor of MonmouthTimeline.org, has been researching this for the past two years and will present the local perspective on Anna & Vito that you won’t get from TV.
This presentation will be conducted on Zoom and is free of charge. Registration and internet access are required to attend. Register below to receive emailed information on how to access the program. Registration closes on July 20 at noon; the Zoom access link will be emailed later that same afternoon.
