Change Your Thoughts, Change Your Life

Thoughts hold power. They can create feelings, influence word choices, impact decisions and even behavior. Thoughts can create or destroy.

If your sixty to eighty thousand daily thoughts habitually focus on the negative – worries, fears, put-downs, judgments of self and/or others — they will sabotage your well-being and pull you downward. Indeed, it has been said that “the mind is the worst torturer.”

Because thoughts are invisible, their power is often ignored or underestimated. Join counselor Eileen Colianni to learn how to give your thoughts the respect they deserve and safeguard your mind as if it were a priceless diamond. It is! After all, what would you do without it?

Sensory Storytime

Regular storytimes are not for everyone.  Sometimes the stimulation is just too much.  If this is something that troubles you, we invite you to our Sensory Storytime.  We will provide a lower key environment with opportunities for controlled sensory input.  We will read stories and participate in activities in an inclusive, supportive, and understanding atmosphere. This is designed for individuals with needs that are unable to be met in regular storytime.  If you have any questions about the program, contact Hope Benson in the Children’s Room.  This is a free event; however, registration is required to be able to assure a comfortable environment for everyone.

East Asian Astronomy

Like ancient Greece and Rome, the people of ancient China developed their own cosmology and interpretation of the stars, which impacted their myths, festivals, and reckoning of time. Most commonly known for the animal cycle of the Lunar New Year and Chinese zodiac, this system of belief has a very old, literary origin and a much broader set of ideas that isn’t widely taught. This presentation by East Asian literature scholar and author Wendelin Gray will cover the historical source material and monuments recording the skies to provide a foundation for understanding that part of the world and as a point of comparison to traditional Western cosmology.

Wendelin Gray is a linguist, writer, dancer, a long-time volunteer with the Silk Screen Arts Organization, and a regular contributor to Pittsburgh Japanese Culture Society events. Her novels include Kumori and the Lucky Cat, The Haunting at Ice Pine Peak, The Vulpecula Cycle, and The Weary City. She won the bronze for Young Adult Fiction E-Book at the 2016 Moonbeam Children’s Book Awards for The Haunting at Ice Pine Peak, and in 2017 she founded a new educational project on Korean Studies, the Enlightened Rabbit Scholastic Society (enlightenedrabbit.wordpress.com). She blogs about East Asian language and literature at icepinepalace.wordpress.com and sunrisesintheeast.wordpress.com.

Book Discussion: 'The Assistant' by Bernard Malamud

The Assistant, Bernard Malamud's second novel, originally published in 1957, is the story of Morris Bober, a grocer in postwar Brooklyn, who "wants better" for himself and his family. First two robbers appear and hold him up; then things take a turn for the better when broken-nosed Frank Alpine becomes his assistant. But there are complications: Frank, whose reaction to Jews is ambivalent, falls in love with Helen Bober; at the same time he begins to steal from the store.

Like Malamud's best stories, this novel unerringly evokes an immigrant world of cramped circumstances and great expectations. Malamud defined the immigrant experience in a way that has proven vital for several generations of writers.

On October 25 Rabbi Barbara Symons of Temple David will lead two discussions of The Assistant at Monroeville Public Library — a morning discussion at 10:00 a.m. and an evening discussion at 7:00 p.m. The discussions are free and open to the public. Please join us!
