Precision Medicine

Presented by the All of Us Research Program

Please join physician and researcher Mylynda Massart for a presentation about precision medicine, an emerging approach for disease treatment and prevention that takes into account individual variability in lifestyle, environment, and biological makeup, in order to deliver the right treatment for the right person at the right time and keep people healthy longer. The University of Pittsburgh is enrolling 150,000 volunteers in the national All of Us Research Program, a groundbreaking effort to advance precision medicine by gathering data from one million volunteers across the US who are 18 years of age or older. The program is open to people both healthy and sick and aims to collect health-related information for research that may one day help doctors provide more precise care for individual patients.

Mylynda B. Massart, M.D., Ph.D. is a Family Medicine physician at UPMC and assistant professor at the University of Pittsburgh. She completed her doctoral degree at the University of Utah in Molecular Biology/Biochemistry and her medical degree from Oregon Health Sciences University. She currently serves as the medical director at UPMC Matilda Theiss Health Center, and as co-director for HUB Core: Integrating Special Populations at the Clinical and Translational Science Institute (CSTI). Dr. Massart has experience working with diverse populations across the lifespan including obstetrics, pediatrics, adults, and older adults. She has served in the National Health Service Core in Idaho working with a rural population and currently works in an underserved community in Pittsburgh. Her research interests are in developing education in genetics and precision medicine for primary care providers and trainees and as a research catalyst facilitating the inclusion of underrepresented populations in biomedical research. She teaches residents and medical students in her clinic and at the hospital and serves as medical director for Bethany Hospice.

That Was Vaudeville

Join versatile entertainer Stephen Lee Rich for “That Was Vaudeville” — a one-hour, one-man variety show combining music, comedy and history. You’ll hear music from the heyday of vaudeville to its declining years (roughly from the Prohibition era through the Second World War) along with explanations of what vaudeville was, how it worked, and its cultural impact. Stephen Lee spices the presentation with anecdotes of the stars of the era (many of whom later went into radio, movies and television) and rounds it all out with comedic story-telling and some yodeling (because every good vaudeville act needs a gimmick).

In the 1980s, when folk music venues in his native Chicago began to disappear, Stephen Lee began working in comedy clubs. He also worked in an outlaw-style country band, as an opening act and rhythm guitarist for an Elvis impersonator, and with various other artists to create a touring vaudeville troupe. Today he’s still commanding the stage with a combination of folk music, vintage standards and original songs. He tours prolifically as a solo act, appearing in venues throughout the Midwest, the South, and the Mid-Atlantic states.

Change Your Thoughts, Change Your Life

Thoughts hold power. They can create feelings, influence word choices, impact decisions and even behavior. Thoughts can create or destroy.

If your sixty to eighty thousand daily thoughts habitually focus on the negative – worries, fears, put-downs, judgments of self and/or others — they will sabotage your well-being and pull you downward. Indeed, it has been said that “the mind is the worst torturer.”

Because thoughts are invisible, their power is often ignored or underestimated. Join counselor Eileen Colianni to learn how to give your thoughts the respect they deserve and safeguard your mind as if it were a priceless diamond. It is! After all, what would you do without it?
