CANCELLED Irish Gaelic Club

Beginners’ Irish

Join us for an adventure in learning Irish Gaelic, “Gaeilge” or just “Irish” as it is known on the emerald isle, Saturdays, here at the Mt. Lebanon Library.

This  first hour of this course is aimed at developing basic conversational skills with no previous knowledge assumed. We will be using the online Buntus Cainte (Fundamentals of Speech) course as a basis for the lessons and a subscription will be included free for all who sign up. Additional notes on turns of phrase, points of grammar, etc. will accompany each lesson.

The second half of this course will be focused on advanced topics.

Irish is the original language of Ireland and has had a difficult history.  Outlawed for many years under pain of death, it was kept alive and still exists today as the first language in different areas of the country.  It has been recently undergoing somewhat of a resurgence as it is now becoming more popular among the youth.

Irish is one of the Celtic languages, which include Scottish Gaelic, Welsh, Breton, Cornish and Manx. This class of languages is rather unique and unrelated to other modern languages.

Global Beat: Klezmer with Steven Greenman Klezmer Trio Live @ the Library

Join your friends and neighbors for an after-hours cultural get-together at the Mt. Lebanon Library. Explore a different country or region of the world each month through live music, food, dance and conversation with the artists. For friends and families of all ages!

The Steven Greenman Klezmer Trio is a dynamic ensemble of internationally renowned musicians who perform the traditional Jewish folk music of Eastern Europe (klezmer) with original compositions and exotic musical arrangements.  Their repertoire includes dazzling dance tunes, breath-taking showpieces and furious displays of virtuosity.  In concert, these consummate artists showcase their combined talents for traditional Jewish and East European folk, classical, liturgical/cantorial, and swing music.The ensemble is led by the violin and includes guitar/string bass, clarinet/accordion and vocals.

Steven Greenman is a multi-talented musical artist, who is equally adept at performing stunning solo violin works with symphony orchestras, soulful East European Jewish folk music (klezmer music) and passionate East European Romani (Gypsy) music.  Steven’s virtuosic performing skills are complimented with his passion for composition and education.  As a composer, Steven has produced two landmark recordings of his original Jewish and klezmer compositions, Stempenyu’s Dream and Stempenyu’s Neshome, while two of his Jewish liturgical melodies have been recognized and published by the Shalshelet Foundation for New Jewish Liturgical Music.  With his recording Khevrisa: European Klezmer Music, Steven is a Smithsonian Folkways recording artist.  As an educator, Steven leads klezmer music master classes internationally and has been a teaching artist with the Cleveland Orchestra’s “Learning Through Music” program since 2001.  He has performed and recorded with several of the world’s leading klezmer ensembles and is a founding member of Cleveland’s East European ensemble Harmonia.  Well-versed in performing Magyar nota and various East European folk music styles Steven has been a guest soloist with the Cleveland Pops Orchestra, the Canton Symphony and the Akron Symphony, performing his own arrangements of traditional East European Romani (“Gypsy”) violin music and klezmer music. A serious classical chamber musician, Steven performs with celebrated early music pianist/harpsichordist Byron Schenkman as The Greenman-Schenkman Duo; an ensemble dedicated to performing the Jewish art music repertoire of the early 20th century Jewish composers from the St Petersburg Society for Jewish Folk Music.

Seven Elements of Classical Art

Join award winning artist, author and retired Point Park professor, James Sulkowski for a presentation on the Seven Elements of Classical Art. Several of Sulkowski’s works will accompany the presentation. James Sulkowski is a classical artist in the tradition of the Masters. His adherence to Old Master concepts and techniques gives his work both timeless and luminous qualities.

His dramatic effects of light and use of deep, rich color have attracted private, corporate and public collectors worldwide including former President and Mrs. George H.W. Bush, the Saudi Arabian Royal Family and the Metropolitan Opera of New York. James studied at the famed Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, Carnegie-Mellon University and most notably with master artist Frank Mason at the Art Students League of New York.

This presentation will preced an 8 week session that will teach students how to apply the  drawing concepts and techniques of the great Masters, specifically from the mid 16th century

(Rennaissance) to the mid 17th century (Baroque) in Europe. Students will examine the basic elements of drawing including Line, Value, Form and Composition.Specific drawing materials will be used such as soft vine charcoal or willow charcoal and conte crayon on toned papers.

Classes will begin in January and will be held on Saturdays from 1:30-3:30 p.m. at the library. Please register online or call the library at 412.531.1912.

Irish Gaelic Club

Pittsburgh's must-see holiday spectacular is back and more magical than ever.

The most magical time of the year arrives with the opening of Winter Flower Show and Light Garden. Built around a "Holiday Magic!" theme, this year's dazzling displays will feature heartwarming vignettes including an extravagant winter feast, Santa's workshop and a sparkling New Year's Eve celebration. The magic is brought to life in signature Phipps fashion with artful LED lights, detailed props, decorated fir and pine trees, amaryllis, orchids and more than 2,000 poinsettias. From majestic, illuminated trees to whimsically oversized ornaments, toys, books and more, the show will delight the senses and kindle the spirit of the season in guests of every age. Adding to the festive atmosphere, in our Outdoor and Discovery Gardens, our biggest, best Winter Light Garden yet will sparkle with luminous orbs, trees, fountains, and a tunnel of lights designed to imitate a twinkling winter sky.

New Features

In addition to all-new indoor displays, the show has been updated with the following exciting new features:

  • illuminated gift-wrapped boxes in the Winter Light Garden;
  • special pinpoint and "firefly" lighting in our Tropical Forest Conservatory;
  • new "aurora borealis" architectural lighting in the Sunken Garden, mirroring the lighting in our Serpentine Room;
  • and much more.

  • illuminated gift-wrapped boxes in the Winter Light Garden;
  • special pinpoint and "firefly" lighting in our Tropical Forest Conservatory;
  • new "aurora borealis" architectural lighting in the Sunken Garden, mirroring the lighting in our Serpentine Room;
  • and much more.
