Doomed Explorers
Abby Mendelson

Sure, it's there.  But why do men trek off into the wilderness in search of fame, fortune, satisfaction, self?  And what happens when they do -- and everything goes wrong?  As we read about our doomed explorers sailing over open seas, hiking deep into treacherous jungles, clambering on impossible peaks, we will explore the warped ideas, growing terror, and eventual destruction of seemingly sane people who thought they could beat the odds -- and Nature herself.  In a surprise coda, we'll look at Ernest Shackleton, who did everything wrong on his voyage to the South Pole -- and lived!

This course will meet for four weeks total: June 27th, July 18th, July 25th, and August 1st

Registration required. Attendees should plan on attending all sessions of this course.  The online registration sheet will be located on the first session’s calendar entry, but will register attendees for the entire course.

The Power Community Book Discussion

Join us for a thoughtful book discussion of The Power by Naomi Alderman.  In THE POWER, the world is a recognizable place: there's a rich Nigerian boy who lounges around the family pool; a foster kid whose religious parents hide their true nature; an ambitious American politician; a tough London girl from a tricky family. But then a vital new force takes root and flourishes, causing their lives to converge with devastating effect. Teenage girls now have immense physical power--they can cause agonizing pain and even death. And, with this small twist of nature, the world drastically resets.

This extraordinary novel by Naomi Alderman, a Sunday Times Young Writer of the Year and Granta Best of British writer, is not only a gripping story of how the world would change if power was in the hands of women but also exposes, with breath-taking daring, our contemporary world.

Copies of the book will be available on display in the new book area.  Light refreshments will be served.

Beginners Irish Gaelic

PLEASE NOTE THE CHANGE IN TIME

Join us for an adventure in learning Irish Gaelic, “Gaeilge” or just “Irish” as it is known on the emerald isle, Saturdays, here at the Mt. Lebanon Library.

This course is aimed at developing basic conversational skills with no previous knowledge assumed. We will be using the online Buntus Cainte (Fundamentals of Speech) course as a basis for the lessons and a subscription will be included free for all who sign up. Additional notes on turns of phrase, points of grammar, etc. will accompany each lesson.

Irish is the original language of Ireland and has had a difficult history.  Outlawed for many years under pain of death, it was kept alive and still exists today as the first language in different areas of the country.  It has been recently undergoing somewhat of a resurgence as it is now becoming more popular among the youth.

Irish is one of the Celtic languages, which include Scottish Gaelic, Welsh, Breton, Cornish and Manx. This class of languages is rather unique and unrelated to other modern languages.

Swap Shop Social--Fiber Frenzy!

Do you have yarn, floss or thread you're not using? Or fabric? Or other craft supplies or tools? Finished with a pattern, magazines or books? Bring a bag/box or TWO of fiber arts supplies, books or patterns to swap (PLEASE, NOT YOUR ENTIRE CRAFT ROOM-NO MORE THAN TWO BAGS OR BOXESsmiley). Bring something, take something. Make sure items are clean and free of odors. Please no bags or boxes of loose buttons (nice buttons on cards are fine, just don't bring your stash). 2:30-3:30 pm -- Swapping and Shopping
3:30-4:00 pm -- Clean Up and Goodbyes

Free and open to the public; small $$ donations will be accepted for future fiber arts programming and supplies. Light refreshments.
