CANCELLED Beginners Irish Gaelic

THIS CLASS HAS BEEN CANCELLED UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE

Join us for an adventure in learning Irish Gaelic, “Gaeilge” or just “Irish” as it is known on the emerald isle, Saturdays, here at the Mt. Lebanon Library.

This course is aimed at developing basic conversational skills with no previous knowledge assumed. We will be using the online Buntus Cainte (Fundamentals of Speech) course as a basis for the lessons and a subscription will be included free for all who sign up. Additional notes on turns of phrase, points of grammar, etc. will accompany each lesson.

Irish is the original language of Ireland and has had a difficult history.  Outlawed for many years under pain of death, it was kept alive and still exists today as the first language in different areas of the country.  It has been recently undergoing somewhat of a resurgence as it is now becoming more popular among the youth.

Irish is one of the Celtic languages, which include Scottish Gaelic, Welsh, Breton, Cornish and Manx. This class of languages is rather unique and unrelated to other modern languages.

The Library is no longer providing beginner instruction on the first Thursday of every month.  Basic knowledge of and some playing experience with Mah Jongg is now required.

Mah Jongg is an ancient game that originated in China and, although a game of strategy and skill, also involves a certain amount of luck and is lots of fun!  You can play the National Mah Jongg League version of the game on Thursday nights from 5:30 to 8:00 p.m. in the upstairs open game section of the Mt. Lebanon Public Library.

Indonesian Martial Arts -- Introduction to Silat
Pak (instructor) Adam Kripke will introduce you to Silat Tuo, an ancient 1500 year old Indonesian martial art practiced for both its self-defense applications as well as its benefits to one's mind, body, and spirit.  Students are guided through a comprehensive system of full-body movement exercises in conjunction with specific breathing, and meditation methodology.  Benefits of the art include improved sensitivity, awareness, mindfulness, stress & anxiety reduction, balance, flexibility, fine motor skills, muscle tone, as well as rehabilitation and injury prevention.

This is an introduction to the art focusing on the health and spiritual benefits and movements instead of the martial art applications.  "Meditation in Motion" is also beneficial for individuals with interests in Dance, Yoga, Aikido, Chi-Gung, Tai Chi, etc; however the movements are drawn from the martial art of Silat Tuo.  (All skill and ability levels are welcome, recommended age 10+).  Second Mondays of each month.
