In-person Chess Club for Kids!

Chess Club for Kids!

Welcome to Mystic Noank Library’s Chess Club! The club welcomes children grade 3 and up! We will be meeting on Wednesdays after school from 4:30  to 5:30 p.m.

Children should know how the chess pieces move before their first visit. We teach chess strategy, chess sportsmanship, and organize games.

Sportsman-like conduct is always a goal. Members must be respectful of each other's play, and at the end of each game, win or lose, members must be cordial with one another.

Instructor:

Michael Grater, library associate and chess enthusiast, leads our Chess Club. He grew up playing chess and continues to play for fun.  Chess is a great game that builds concentration, patience, planning, sportsmanship, and problem-solving skills in children, teens and adults.

Writers' Group

We welcome local writers for free-write sessions at 4 p.m., Mondays, in the Ames Room. The sessions are open to anyone who feels like writing.

Loosely based on the notion of stream-of-consciousness writing described by Natalie Goldberg in "Writing Down the Bones," the sessions are broken into three parts of 5 minutes, 10 minutes, and 5 minutes. A writer selects a topic from subjects previously placed in a box. For the first 5 minutes, write whatever comes to mind. Don't stop to correct, just record whatever pops into your head, even if it's something like, "I have no idea what to write..." Each person shares what they've written, free of commentary or criticism.

Then, for 10 minutes, writers write what comes to mind, perhaps an idea or a subject someone had just read aloud or something you wrote in the first 5 minutes will lead to a focus. The group shares again. Writers write for another 5 minutes and then share.

You'll be surprised at the places you'll go with the topics in these sessions. They give you an opportunity to express yourself, they're therapeutic, and they often lead to a lot to talk about after putting your pens down.

Writing a Legacy Letter: Sharing Your Values with Loved Ones

A legacy letter (also called an “ethical will”) is a written document that allows you to share your life lessons, express your values and transmit your blessings to future generations. A legacy letter is not a formal legal document or a full-length memoir; it’s a brief personal statement, typically just a few pages. Writing one is a rewarding experience that creates an enduring gift for your family, friends and loved ones. This 4-part course is designed to introduce the concept of legacy letters and to help you craft your own legacy letter.

Our presenter is Jay Sherwin.  Jay has practiced law, given away money for five charitable foundations and served as a hospital chaplain. You can read more on Jay’s website at  www.jaysherwin.com.

This is a zoom event.  Please click here to register in advance.  After registering, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the meeting. You must be able to commit to attending all four classes.

Co-sponsored by the Mystic & Noank, Groton Public, Ledyard Public, and Waterford Public Libraries

Norman Rockwell: Is Illustration Fine Art?

As the highlight of its Year of Narrative Art, Mystic Museum of Art (MMoA) will present 323 of the covers that Norman Rockwell created for The Saturday Evening Post, from June 18 to September 18. Norman Rockwell took his studio work seriously; taking few vacations in his life and spending up to six months to create a single cover image. His images were--and remain--tremendously popular and easily accessible. Join this discussion of his artwork and whether there is a distinction between "fine art" and illustration.

Registration is required to attend this program. Attendees are encouraged to wear masks.

Roode Concert Series: Connor Holdridge Duo

Join us this summer for the Mystic & Noank Library's annual Roode Memorial Concert Series. It's a series of free outdoor concerts on the grounds of the Mystic & Noank Library. These concerts celebrate the life of Mystic & Noank Library patron Agnes Roode. Roode was a longtime Mystic resident who loved music and the Library. Her family continues the traditionn of honoring her legacy with a wonderful lineup of talented musicians in 2021. This summer's series features three local musicians from different genres and musical stylings. In the event of rain, indoor attendance will be limited, and the library will welcome the first 50 guests to arrive. Masks are encouraged in the event of an indoor concert. No registration is necessary.

Connor Holdridge Duo
Connor Holdridge is a guitarist and composer in the Baltimore / Washington area. He has been a member of several performing acts over the years, including Michael Joseph Harris and his band Ultrafaux. Connor has been known to play a variety of guitar styles but mostly performs the music of Django Reinhardt. In this special concert, Connor will be joined by violinist, Nataly Merezhuk. Nataly is an exceptionally conversational improviser, well-steeped in the jazz violin styles of Stephane Grappelli and Sven Asmussen. Her melodic improvisations are a perfect match for Connor's explosive-yet-sensitive guitar accompaniment.

We invite you to come back for our next two concert dates: Thursday, July 21 at 6PM with Nora Fox, and Thursday, August 16 at 6PM with Jordan Auber.

Digital Program: Becoming an iNaturalist in Homegrown National Park

Join us with Tim Wachtmann, biologist, research scientist, lifelong gardener and owner of Plantscapes New England, for a presentation on the concept of Homegrown National Park and its importance in conserving and enhancing biodiversity in our landscapes. Tim will show how Pollinator Pathways can be used to build local sections of the "Park" from our individual residences, business properties, and public spaces. A live demonstration of the iNaturalist citizen science app will illustrate how native plants, pollinators, and other wildlife can be cataloged as the pathways grow. We will use the Ledyard Pollinator Pathway as an example of how to create and grow a citizen-led biodiversity corridor in any locality. Want to get started now? Visit Pollinator Pathways for more information.

Speaker Bio
Tim Wachtmann is a biologist by training and profession with over 25 years' experience as a research scientist and certification in secondary science education. He is a lifelong gardener and plant enthusiast and honed his skills in plant selection, design, pest and disease control, and ecological gardening approaches as a manager for many years in the region's largest garden center. He is an active member and supporter of the Society for Ecological Restoration, the Native Plant Trust, the Berkshire Botanical Garden, the Arnold Arboretum in Boston, and the Fairchild Tropical Botanical Garden in Miami. 15 Minute Field Trips™ presents Ant Detectives & the Worm Cafe!

Ant Detectives & the Worm Cafe!

Look closely! Ants are everywhere and we hardly notice! Using hoops and string, we'll look from an ant's point of view and tally up behaviors we observe. We will then create an underground treasure map with tunnels, worms, and more creatures hidden underground. Explore the mysteries of ant behavior with 15 Minute Field Trips!

We'll take 30 minutes to learn behavior like foraging, communication, preening, carrying, herding, farming, fighting, and swarming and go on an ant behavior scavenger hunt. Stick around to create menus for the worm cafe and talk with deep underground jazz worm, Blind Lemon Nightcrawler.

15 Minute Field Trips™ offers hands-on education programs at the intersection of art, community action, and the natural world. We believe art is an especially effective motivator of environmental advocacy. When we observe art in nature, and create art from nature, we develop a unique sense of unity with and protectiveness over the environment. 15 Minute Field Trips harnesses this philosophy in its in-person training sessions, designed to instill in students and families an appreciation for the outdoors, and empower them as environmental activists.

Outdoor Yoga Class

We invite you to join us and Chelsea from Bluebird Yoga for an all levels (beginner friendly) yoga practice on the Library grounds at 10:00 am! Wake up your body with a gentle stretch followed by flowing movement and strengthening. We will be meeting on the Library's front lawn near the original entrance.

Please bring your own equipment. Chelsea recommends:

  • A yoga mat and yoga props (you will not specifically need any props unless they are part of your usual practice)
  • A towel or blanket to place under your mat and one for over your body during savasana
  • A water bottle
  • Sunscreen and bug spray
  • A mask for walking to and from your mat

Chelsea, aka Bluebird Yoga, is a local from Stonington. Yoga, for Chelsea, is about fostering healing through kindess. The goal in her classes is to hold the space for her fellow yogis to cultivate kindness on and off the mat. She understands the importance of safe movement and leads students through a practice that builds from gentler meditations through more difficult variations as they increase in strength and flexibility. Email Chelsea with any questions at: chbluebirdyoga@gmail.com

Registration is requested but not required to attend.

Family Yoga on the Library Lawn!

Join us for family yoga on the Library lawn. This is a joyful way for children to explore movement and develop physical skills, learn yoga poses through active imagination, and creatively channel energy by following movement instruction and practicing calming moments.

This energetic class teaches body awareness and basic teacher/student dynamic using sing-along and movement to act out favorite animals, nursery rhymes, and songs. Children also learn how they can use their breath and other skills to calm themselves down when feeling silly or upset. Bring your own blanket or mat.

Digital Program: Upcycling Textiles Meet-Up

Looking for ways to be creative for free? Plan to have these items on hand if you have them: sewing machine (optional), extra needles and thread, fabric glue (optional), scissors, and some old clothes to get started with.

Check out this Virtual Upcycling Meetup 101 document to help prepare for your first meeting.

In-person Chess Club for Kids!

Chess Club for Kids!

Welcome to Mystic Noank Library’s Chess Club! The club welcomes children grade 3 and up!
