St. Mark's Anti-Racism Team will be "re-starting" holding a monthly intentional book club on the topic of racism. This intentional book club, Mystic Conversations on Race (MyCOR), is intended for people who understand that the toxicity of historic and contemporary racism must be confronted...in our hearts, in our minds, and in our communities.
We are "restarting" in September because MyCOR "live" was shutdown after an initial meeting at the Mystic & Noank Library in February 2020 due to the pandemic. Events since have shown that the need to educate ourselves on racism in both historical and contemporary contexts is as important as ever. We are "intentional," as a book club, because we "intend" that our reading, discussion, and reflection will lead to personal change and broader action. We will reboot virtually, using the Google Classroom platform and meeting on a monthly basis for small group discussions via Zoom.
In this book club, we will reflect on texts (fiction and nonfiction), films, and podcasts on the origins of race, the processes and effects of racism, and on white complicity and supremacy. We will be reading (among others) Toni Morrison, Ibram X. Kendi, Isabel Wilkerson, Dorothy Roberts, Imani Perry, and more. We will also be viewing/listening to films/podcasts by Katrina Browne, Ava Duvernay, and The New York Times' "1619 Project."
Click here to view a schedule of meetings and the accompanying material(s) to be discussed.
Please register: Please email start@stmarksmystic.org with "Mystic Conversations on Race" as the subject and include your name and phone number.
QUESTIONS? Call 860-572-9549 or email start@stmarksmystic.org. A member of the St. Mark's Anti-Racism Task Force (StART) will get back to you.

You don't have to be da Vinci to enjoy drawing. A Drexel University study published in Art Therapy in 2016 found that drawing releases stress reduction hormones for everyone, regardless of skill level. Come pick up your very own beginner's grab and go drawing kit at the Library and start your artist's journey. The kit includes a sketchbook, three drawing pencils, a black pen, an eraser, and some introductory information about drawing. Supplies are limited, so register early to ensure you receive a kit!
Then join us for a Zoom program about basic tips and techniques for drawing, and how to make drawing a stress relieving practice. We will continue to meet monthly to share art, sketches, or doodles we've been working on with other group members, and then have built in time to free sketch and chat. All are welcome to join the Zoom meeting with their own materials or with drawing grab and go kits provided by the Library.

Join us for this exciting lecture and musical celebration with master flutist, educator, and lecturer Galen Abdur-Razzaq on the role and history of jazz music during the Civil Rights Movement. This program is a combined lecture and music performance that opens with a flute prelude performed by Galen.
His program chronicles music from the turn of the century to present day and highlights various artists, their music, their influence on the evolution of jazz, and their struggles during a 60 minute audiovisual presentation. It also illustrates how jazz became an advocacy for the Civil Rights Movement, with proceeds from jazz concerts used to finance major events such as the Freedom Rides and the March on Washington in 1963. Galen infuses musical demonstrations throughout the lecture. Close by testing your knowledge of the subject with a trivia quiz.
Registration is required to attend this program. You will receive a Zoom invitation the morning of the program. Please note that this program cannot be recorded. We ask that you only register if you're certain you can attend.

While Americans watched monsters and aliens in the movies and on TV during the Cold War, Russians had a very different experience. When Stalin was still alive, the movies gave Russians a unique and peculiar viewpoint on America and its culture (hint -- they loved it). With the dramatic success of Sputnik, Soviet Space Culture provided an inspirational period of optimism and self-confidence that helped foment peaceful outreach to the West. Its legacy sustains Russian pride and culture to this day.
Join us for this illustrated talk with lecturer David Davison, who has presented dozens of talks at museums and libraries throughout Connecticut. This talk is a follow-up to his presentation last month: Hollywood and the Atom Bomb.

Join us for this all ages event with Horizon Wings, a CT organization that rehabilitates wild birds and hosts community education programs. Meet some threatened and endangered wild birds live over a Zoom call. What do the classifications "threatened" and "endangered" really mean? What caused the drastic decline of the Peregrine Falcon populations in North America in the 1960s? Horizon Wings will feature an American Kestrel, a Peregrine Falcon, a Northern Saw-Whet Owl, a Barn Owl, and a Bald Eagel in this educational event. Learn which species of raptors are currently on Connecticut's threatened and endangered list and ways in which we can help to promote their survival.
