Ragtime, by E.L. Doctorow

This shimmering masterpiece by E.L. Doctorow is set in the years before the First World War. One lazy Sunday afternoon in New Rochelle, New York, the famous escape artist Harry Houdini swerves his car into a telephone pole outside the home of an affluent American family. Almost magically, the line between fact and fiction, between real and invented characters, diappears. This is the era of Henry Ford and his Model T; of Emma Goldman the revolutionary; of J.P. Morgan, the great tycoon; of Evelyn Nesbit, the former chorus girl, for whom some lovers pine and others die. All of them cross paths with Doctorow's brilliant fictional creations, including Tateh, an immigrant Jewish peddler, and Coalhouse Walker Jr.,a ragtime pianist from Harlem whose insistence on a point of justice brings this spellbinding classic to a shocking climax.

Nine Days

Will spends his days in a remote outpost watching the live Point of View (POV) on TVs of people going about their lives, until one subject perishes, leaving a vacancy for a new life on earth. Soon, several candidates, unborn souls, arrive at Will's to undergo tests determining their fitness, facing oblivion when they are deemed unsuitable. But Will soon faces his own existential challenge in the form of free-spirited Emma, a candidate who is not like the others, forcing him to turn within and reckon with his own tumultuous past. Fueled by unexpected power, he discovers a bold new path forward in his own life. A heartfelt and meditative vision of human souls in limbo, aching to be born against unimaginable odds, yet hindered by forces beyond their will. Winston Duke, Benedict Wong, Bill Skarsgård. 124 min. Rated R for language.

Beauty with Brains: The Hedy Lamarr Story

Join us as Keith Crocker presents the behind-the-scenes stories of one of Hollywood’s most gorgeous screen sirens, Miss Hedy Lamarr. Austrian actress Lamarr took the world by storm by appearing nude in the controversial 1933 German film Ecstasy. Fleeing her munitions making husband prior to the outbreak of WWII, Lamarr came to the United States and took Hollywood by storm, appearing in some of the most celebrated movies in the golden age of cinema (co-starring with Clark Gable in Boomtown and James Stewart in Come Live with Me). She peaked playing Delilah in Samson and Delilah. What makes her even more remarkable was that she was an inventor. At the beginning of World War II, Lamarr developed a radio guidance system using frequency hopping technology for torpedoes launched by the allied armies, intended to defeat the threat of jamming by the Axis. Yet, with all the beauty and brilliance displayed by this remarkable woman, she still never understood her popularity nor her appeal. Journey with us as we pay tribute to this remarkable lady.
