It is Super Bowl Sunday in the year 2022. Five people, dinner, an apartment on the east side of Manhattan. The retired physics professor and her husband and her former student waiting for the couple who will join them from what becomes a dramatic flight from Paris. The conversation ranges from a survey telescope in North-central Chile to a favorite brand of bourbon to Einstein's 1912 Manuscript on the Special Theory of Relativity. Then something happens and the digital connections that have transformed our lives are severed.-Publisher

During the warm months, we will meet outside at the library for our book discussions.
You'll need: the book and a camp chair, and we recommend some water and sunscreen (and maybe your chair has a cover or an umbrella to keep the sun off).
Masks will be optional, as we will be outside, and we will keep our chairs at least 6 feet apart.

An Gorta Mór: The Great Hunger

Join Tom O'Reilly, Historian with the Ancient Order of Hibernians, as he discusses An Gorta Mór, or The Great Hunger, in Ireland from 1845-1848. Between 1845 and 1850, more than a million Irish people starved to death while massive quantities of food were being exported from their country. A half million were evicted from their homes during the potato blight, and a million and a half immigrated to America, Britain and Australia, often on-board rotting, overcrowded “coffin ships”.  This lecture is the story of how that immense tragedy came to pass.
