Hawaiian Steel Guitar

The Hawaiian steel guitar is played flat on the lap with a steel bar instead of the fingers, hence the name steel guitar. It was invented in the late 1800s in Hawaii and is instantly recognizable with it’s lilting gentle sound.

In this program Chris Merwin presents four different steel guitars, each with it’s own unique sound and appearance. One of them was made in 1927, is made of metal, and is chrome plated. It has three speaker cones made of aluminum inside of it which resonate and make it louder. Another is made of all Hawaiian koa wood (the koa tree grows only in Hawaii), and the neck is hollow. This is highly unusual as no stringed instrument in the world has a hollow neck except these special steel guitars. All of the steel guitars in this show are historically important in the history of the instrument and they are all from the 1920s and extremely rare. Cultural and historical information is given.

About Chris Merwin

Chris began studying the guitar at the age of 12 and was performing and teaching by the time he was 17. He studied bluegrass flat picking on acoustic guitar at 18, and learned to play many styles including blues, rock, heavy metal, and some classical. At 21 he began to play the Hawaiian steel guitar, and at 24 branched out by picking up the Colombian tiple, Irish bouzouki, Turkish saz, Arabic oud, studying classical Arabic music for three years with a master from Iraq. He later picked up the Portugese guitar, Turkish yali tambur, and mandolin, and steel drum. He specializes in Caribbean music playing both reggae and calypso and taught himself the steel drum. In his late 20s he began studying the Japanese shakuhachi flute and it took over his musical life. Since that time it has been his main instrument of focus and he is now highly classically trained on it playing both Buddhist meditation and classical music, as well as folk songs. He also studied Hawaiian music in Hawaii and at home in NY, and is steeped in American roots music-blues, country, gospel, and bluegrass. He offers shows in all these styles as well shows of popular cover songs from the 40s through the 90s. He has played in many original bands since the age of 14 and has been composing his own music since that time. In addition to his musical studies he began travelling the world to study traditional music at the source and to learn more about the world we live in. His travels have taken him to Tibet (twice), Egypt, Thailand, Cambodia, Laos, Japan (many times), China (twice), Holland, Mexico, Belize, Guatemala, and all over America and Canada. He studied shakuhachi in Japan with one of the eras greatest masters, and he studied oud in Egypt. He has performed at the National Cherry Blossom Festival, the United Nations, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the New York and Brooklyn Botanical Gardens, as well as countless libraries, arts councils, and schools.

Concert : Homegrown Two

Rick and Georgianne Jackofsky have been making beautiful music together since their high school sweetheart days, including performing with their family band The Homegrown String Band, since 1997. When not performing with the band, the intrepid couple finds themselves in a position to explore new musical directions. The result of these sonic adventures is Homegrown Two; a duo creating new music while exploring the oral traditions of the 19th and 20th century vernacular music that was enjoyed everywhere from posh Victorian parlors to rough and rowdy labor camps across the rural American countryside. A Homegrown Two performance celebrates the spirit of songcatchers and composers from Francis Child and Stephen Foster to Harry Smith and Bob Dylan. Their repertoire of traditional and original material is performed using a variety of acoustic instruments including guitar, banjo, mountain dulcimer, doumbek, banjo ukulele, and harmonica.

Edgar Allan Poe: From Literature to the Silver Screen

The literary genius who gave us the mystery, horror and sci-fi genres is under our microscope for this presentation. Poe's achievements in literature are well documented. But not many know about how long Poe has been influencing cinema. In this program we will watch some short films based on Poe's work, and we'll also see clips from feature films as well. We'll talk about the actors and directors who made a career off of bringing Poe's stories to life, Vincent Price, Roger Corman and so many more. So get ready for thrills and chills as we dig deep into the legend of Edgar Allan Poe and the cinematic macabre he so cleverly influenced. Presented by Keith Crocker.
