Children's Winter Reading Club

CHILDREN'S WINTER READING CLUB

January 5 – February 11

Last year’s Winter Reading Club was a big success so here comes round two! For five-plus weeks, our young readers are invited to stop in at the Children’s Room to register and pick up a Winter Reading Club tracking bookmark.  You may register in person, by phone or online.

If registering by phone or online, please  be sure to visit the Children's Room at your convenience to pick up your Winter Reading Club tracking bookmark!

Here's how it works:  Simply record the names of the books you’ve read (or, for our pre-readers, books you have listened to!) on the back of the bookmark. Once you have recorded at least four books, that bookmark becomes your entry form to win one of our cool prize baskets! Just drop the entry form in the age appropriate box at the Children's Desk beginning January 11.   Enter as often as you like.

Winners will be announced Friday, February 12.    Good luck and happy reading!

It's 1911 and Greta Goldbaum is forced to move from glittering Vienna to damp England to wed Albert, a distant cousin. The Goldbaum family are one of the wealthiest in the world, with palaces across Europe, but as Jews and perpetual outsiders they know that strength lies in family. At first defiant and lonely, slowly Greta softens toward Albert, and as the wild paths and untamed beauty of Greta's new English garden begin to take shape, so too does their love begin to blossom. But World War I looms and even the influential Goldbaums cannot alter its course. For the first time in two hundred years, the family will find itself on opposing sides, and Greta will have to choose: the family she's created, or the one she left behind.

Monday Afternoon Book Discussion

Red at the Bone: A NovelAs the book opens in 2001, it is the evening of sixteen-year-old Melody's coming of age ceremony in her grandparents' Brooklyn brownstone. Watched lovingly by her relatives and friends, making her entrance to the music of Prince, she wears a special custom-made dress. But the event is not without poignancy. Sixteen years earlier, that very dress was measured and sewn for a different wearer: Melody's mother, for her own ceremony-- a celebration that ultimately never took place.

Unfurling the history of Melody's parents and grandparents to show how they all arrived at this moment, Woodson considers not just their ambitions and successes but also the costs, the tolls they've paid for striving to overcome expectations and escape the pull of history. As it explores sexual desire and identity, ambition, gentrification, education, class and status, and the life-altering facts of parenthood, Red at the Bone most strikingly looks at the ways in which young people must so often make long-lasting decisions about their lives--even before they have begun to figure out who they are and what they want to be.
