Science Quest: Chatham’s Great White Sharks by Atlantic White Shark Conservancy
6:30 PM - 7:30 PM

The warm weather is finally starting to arrive and people are flocking to the beaches on Cape Cod. The seal population on Monomoy Island in Chatham is growing, attracting Great White Sharks to the East Coast. Everyone gets excited when the aerial shots of the sharks are shown on the news. But very little is known about these sharks living on the East Coast of the United States.

In 2009, Massachusetts Division of Marine Fisheries biologists, Dr. Greg Skomal and John Chisholm were the first to successfully tag and track great whites in the Northwest Atlantic Ocean using high tech tags. We they have the ability to track local and long range movements, study behavior and biology, and estimate population size.

Please join us for a fascinating evening about Great White Sharks and the results of Dr. Greg Skomal's research.

Recomended for adults and families with children in grades 4 and up.

This program is funded by the Friends of the Nevins Memorial Library.

Author Event: Hallie Ephron
6:30 PM - 8:00 PM

Please join us as we welcome New York Times Best Selling author Hallie Ephron to the Nevins Library!

Hallie will be here to talk about her latest book, You'll Never Know, DearPublisher's Weekly said this book is an “engaging portrait of three generations of bickering, bull-headed, but loving women challenged to become their bravest and best selves.” A little about the book:

Lissie Woodham was only seven years old when her little sister Janey disappeared. They had been in the front yard, playing with their dolls, custom creations made for them by their mother Miss Sorrel, a famous dollmaker. Lissie wandered off for a moment. When she returned to the yard, Janey was gone, and so was her doll.

Now an adult with a college-aged daughter of her own, Lis has never stopped blaming herself for what happened, and it continues to haunt her. Every year on the anniversary of Janey’s disappearance, Miss Sorrel places a classified ad in the local papers with a picture of Janey’s one-of-a-kind doll, offering a cash reward for its return. Never, in all these years, has anyone brought her a doll that could be Janey’s—until now. Four decades after Janey went missing, a woman responds to the ad with a broken porcelain doll.

What begins as a small clue in a tragic cold case turns into something far more sinister. The women in Miss Sorrel’s family may be in danger, because whoever knows the truth about what happened all those years ago will do anything to keep it hidden.

Ms. Ephron is also the author of Night Night, Sleep Tight and four other mystery books.  Copies of her books will be available for purchase and signing.  Refreshements will be available.

Science Quest: Wingmasters-The World of Owls (1st to 6th grade)
10:00 AM - 11:00 AM

Come see a variety of owls and separate fact from fiction. Owls are superbly adapted nocturnal hunters who use their specialized powers of sight, hearing and flight to survive and thrive in the wild.  Today you will have an opportunity to see several live owls up close and personal. Because the owls are nocturnal, this is a rare treat. Please be aware that this is a program geared for school-aged children; sudden movements and loud noises startle the birds.

This program is funded by the Friends of the Nevins Memorial Library.

Parking at the library will be crowded during this event. Please use the lot in front of the Quinn Public Safety Building (across the street from the library) or on High Street for overflow parking. Carpooling with friends is encouraged.

Parents, if your plans change after you register, please call us at 978-686-4080 ext. 26. This will allow us to offer your spot to another family on our waiting list. Thank you :-)

Solar Eclipse Party
1:00 PM - 3:30 PM

Come join us to see the amazing and rare total solar eclipse as it happens on August 21 2017.

Libraries across the country are encouraging patrons to join together to witness this event in nature that hasn’t happened in the Continental United States since 1979.

This year the solar eclipse takes place across the Midwest of the United States. We’ll be able to see a partial eclipse here, weather permitting, but thanks to modern technology, we’ll also be able to show the total eclipse live, as it happens.

In addition to the live feed from NASA TV, we’ll have activities related to astronomy, storytimes about the stars and planets, crafts to make pinhole cameras to safely watch solar eclipses and a dramatic portrayal of what is really happening during the eclipse.  We’ll also be serving some fun snacks that may make you ponder the stars.

This is an All Ages event so bring your curiosity and your enthusiasm for space (and maybe your parents), and maybe we’ll go to infinity and beyond.
