On each metal plate in Matt Brand’s show (left), you see glints of light travel along thousands of microscopically engraved grooves that function like curved pieces of tinsel. When you move, the responsive motion of these dots of light is just enough to cue your visual imagination, which generously hallucinates 3D surfaces and volumes.

http://downloads.newtonfreelibrary.net/programs/EK%20images/11_2017/wx11_02_Art_Leslie_Goldman.jpgLeslie Goldman’s work (right) is an exploration of the feminine and the decorative. It is an investigation of language, line, pattern and light. Text and images are selected through elimination. Another layer of possibilities is added by using discarded books that are deconstructed and reconstructed.

Tracking Your Ancestors Using Local Resources -- Yours and Theirs
7:00 PM - 8:30 PM

Typically, you begin your family research with the resources closest to you, including your public library. But you shouldn't stop there. This class is about tracking your ancestors in the towns and cities, counties and states where they actually lived. Here is where fresh discoveries are made, obstacles are broken down, and wonderful stories can be discovered. How do you track down digitized collections, special records, newspaper articles, books, and/or manuscripts that have been generated locally about people, families, and events in that community?  I will discuss how to uncover online the resources available in places you've never visited. You will learn how to find libraries and history and genealogy societies relevant to the communities you are researching. You may discover relatives still living there, perhaps some you know nothing about and who may be working on a parallel track in a genealogy quest of their own. Eventually you may decide that there are places you want to actually visit. As you identify the localities you need to search, the focus and the scope of your project may shift and expand -- prepare yourself for surprises.

Charles River Watershed Association: Studying the Watertown Dam
7:00 PM - 9:00 PM

http://downloads.newtonfreelibrary.net/programs/EK%20images/11_2017/wx11_09_Program_CRWA.jpg

Elisabeth Cianciola, Aquatic Scientist for the Charles River Watershed Association, will give a talk that will:

Describe the potential benefits and challenges associated with dam removal projects

Outline the process that dam owners and river managers use to determine the fate of a dam

The Watertown Dam (where California and Galen Streets meet) was selected as a priority project by the Massachusetts Department of Fish and Game’s Division of Ecological Restoration (DER) in 2016. A feasibility study that would help the project team determine whether or not dam removal is appropriate for this site is currently being planned. Along the Charles River, dam removal can be a very attractive course of action in cases where they are no longer actively used because it creates a stable and resilient ecosystem that better serves wildlife and the people who live around and use the river. The program is cosponsored by the Newton Conservators.
