College Admissions Testing: A Roadmap
7:00 PM - 8:15 PM

summitWith the first administration of the redesigned SAT last spring and an increasing number of students taking the ACT, families have many questions about the current state of standardized testing.  In this seminar, we will explain the role of standardized tests in the college admissions process.  We will discuss the differences between the SAT and ACT to help students and families better understand these tests’ design.  Lastly, we will examine sample problems from the two tests to highlight the differences between them so that students can make a more informed decision when deciding between the SAT and ACT.   The goals of this presentation are to take away some of the anxiety that surrounds these tests and to give families information to help guide them through their own unique testing plans:  Which test.  When to take them.  How and when to prepare for them. Presentedy by Drew Heilpern, Ph.D. of the Summit Educational Group.

Art Reception for Eli Portman
7:00 PM - 8:30 PM

http://downloads.newtonfreelibrary.net/programs/EK%20images/05_2017/wx05_04_Art_Eli_Portman.jpgThe public is welcome to attend the opening reception for these art shows which are part of the Newton Festival of the Arts. Refreshments will be served.

Eli Portman grew up reading comic books which, as an artist, informed http://downloads.newtonfreelibrary.net/programs/EK%20images/05_2017/wxFOA%20LOGO%20(Vertical)_original.jpghis attraction to dynamic line work. Sharp angles, hatching, light and dark; he uses his dip pen to take the parts of this city that he remembers most, specifically the places that lack exposure, and show their stains, their marks and dents.

http://downloads.newtonfreelibrary.net/programs/EK%20images/05_2017/wx05_04_Art_Barney_Levitt_19x23_MaternityLeave_Oiloncanvas_2016.jpgBarney Levitt creates his paintings layer by layer, capturing in painstaking detail every nuance of his subject. His work, most of which is still life driven, is greatly influenced by the works of the Dutch and Flemish masters, particularly Vermeer. He likes working with ‘timeless’ objects which give viewers a sense of the nostalgia of a long ago era.

7:00 PM - 9:00 PM

http://downloads.newtonfreelibrary.net/programs/EK%20images/05_2017/wx05_17%20Program%20NewtonStorySlam_mike2.jpgIf you’ve never been to a “story slam”, you will love it – friends and neighbors take turns presenting their stories. The theme is Out of the Blue. Anyone who attends can (but is not required to) http://downloads.newtonfreelibrary.net/programs/EK%20images/05_2017/wxFOA%20LOGO%20(Vertical)_original.jpgthrow their name in a hat to tell a story. Featured guests will include Pastor Alicia Johnson (Myrtle Baptist Church), Tom Lyons, (Owner New England Mobile Book Fair), Tova Mirvis (Novelist) and Linda Plaut (Director of the Mayor’s Office on Cultural Affairs). Whether you want to participate or be part of the audience, join us for this lively Newton Festival of the Arts program!

Here’s how it works: Your story should be 5 minutes at most, be your own real life experience and relate to the theme. Beyond that, it’s up to you. What you say can be funny, sad, poignant or ridiculous – it just has to be a good story. Get up and tell it, no reading, no notes, no props. NOTE: Please refrain from presenting material that is obscene, offensive or otherwise inappropriate for the library environment.
