The Road to Revolution in Newton
7:00 PM - 9:00 PM

http://downloads.newtonfreelibrary.net/programs/EK%20images/07_2017/wx07_11_Author_JL_Bell_book_Cover.jpgIn September 1774 the farmers of Middlesex County rose up and ended royal government in most of Massachusetts. For the next seven months, Patriot activists and the British governor raced to seize artillery. Cannon disappeared from ships, shore batteries and even armories under redcoat guard. In Newton, citizens voted to form their own artillery company. Join John Bell, author of The Road to Concord, as he uncovers the hidden history that led to the Revolutionary War. The program is cosponsored by Historic Newton. A book signing will follow.

7:00 PM - 9:00 PM

http://downloads.newtonfreelibrary.net/programs/EK%20images/07_2017/wx07_20_Program_Etay_Mayor.jpgWhen asked "Why do you rob banks", Willie Sutton famously replied "Because that's where the money is." Banks and financial institutions have always been a major target, and this didn't when they decided to offer their services online. Phishing, Trojan horses, social engineering and other technologies have been used by cybercriminals for over a decade. In this session we will take a look at how these threats operate and how cybercrime turned into a $500B industry. The program will include live demos of hacking techniques and a tour of the dark web where this tools and services are bought and sold. Etay Mayor, Executive Security Advisor, IMB Security, will facilitate. This program is cosponsored by the City of Newton Department of Senior Services.

Bubbleology-The Secret World of Bubbles
7:00 PM - 8:00 PM

Bubbleology enchants audiences of all ages with the art and science of soap bubbles. Keith uses bubbles—large and small—to explain liquids, solids and gasses, geometry, tension and pressure,  and builds beautiful sculptural creations (massive & miniature) with enthusiasm, humor and style.  One moment he will be encasing a dinosaur in a bubble and in the next moment he's encapsulating an audience volunteer. While those demonstrations snare viewers attention—Keith reveals the science behind the magic, unfolding the "how-to" like a mystery, making it both educational and unforgettable.  For all ages.

Janet Shalstrom’s drawings reflect her origins in the countryside. An exploration of landscapes, they express the experience of looking within that landscape and finding that we can begin to see yet more worlds within one small sector of the larger world. Julianne Martin hopes her viewers will experience her paintings in a way that is similar to looking at the surface of water. From emptiness and depth rushes a true focus. The public is welcome to attend the reception, refreshments will be served.

Kong: Skull Island: Movie
6:30 PM - 8:30 PM

Kong: Skull Island

The producers of Godzilla reimagine the origins of one the most powerful monster myths of all in Kong: Skull Island, from Warner Bros. Pictures, Legendary Pictures and Tencent Pictures. This compelling, original adventure from director Jordan Vogt-Roberts (The Kings of Summer) tells the story of a diverse team of scientists, soldiers and adventurers uniting to explore a mythical, uncharted island in the Pacific, as dangerous as it is beautiful. Cut off from everything they know, the team ventures into the domain of the mighty Kong, igniting the ultimate battle between man and nature. As their mission of discovery becomes one of survival, they must fight to escape a primal Eden in which humanity does not belong. Rated PG-13. Runtime 118 minutes. Enjoy light refreshments courtesy of the Library.
