Start Your Common App

Along with Collegewise Counselor, Abby van Geldern, we'll explore the Common App! The Common App gives you a lot of opportunities to tell your story in a way that admissions directors will find compelling. We don’t like to have missed opportunities on an application, so Abby will go through each part of the Common App and show you where you can inject your personality and where you can protect your shortcomings. Abby will also share how admission officers use the information you give them to make admission decisions.

Writing College Essays That Make a Difference
7:00 PM - 8:30 PM

This presentation will provide students with strategies for writing a college application essay that can make the difference between a “Yes” and a “Maybe." We’ll look at case studies of successful essays and students will have the opportunity to have their essays assessed by Dr. Schwartz. Adam Schwartz taught writing at Harvard and Wellesley for twenty-five years, and his service on the Board of Admissions at Wellesley College has provided him with an insider’s knowledge of the college application process. His stories have been published in The New Yorker and he is an award-winning novelist. For teens and and their adults. If you'd like to have a draft assessed by Dr. Schwartz, please email it to him by 5:00 pm on September 23rd, aschwartz42695@gmail.com.

Why Students Need To Rethink Social Media in 2018
7:00 PM - 8:00 PM

Today, both colleges and employers are actively looking at students' social media profiles.  Research from companies like Social Assurity and Social Intelligence confirms that while colleges are using sophisticated software to track student interest and interactions, many employers are using third-party background screening companies as part of their hiring process. Legally, these companies can look at up to seven years of internet and social media history, which means what students are posting today may be part of a social media audit that could affect their prospective employment opportunities.

Join us to hear Robin Clebnik, Career Exploration Expert and founder of InternBoston, explain exactly what information prospective schools and employers are looking for, as well as how students can use social media to build an authentic, discoverable and informative digital presence. There’s time for a Q + A at the end of the talk and all participants will receive a digital copy of this presentation. This is for teens and their adults.
