Meditation for Health and Well-Being Series
6:30 PM - 8:00 PM

We are pleasaed to present a 7-part series on Meditation called Meditation Practice for Health and Wellbeing. The series will be presented by Academic Dr. Dhanjoo Ghista, a resident of Northborough and lifelong practitioner of meditation for improved health and wellbeing. Professor Ghista has taught meditation in a variety of settings, including senior centers, yoga centers and at the Northborough Free Library.

This will be a seven week course, wherein the group will meet once a week for 1.5 hours. The first half-hour will be presentation by Prof. Ghista, the second half-hour will be collective or group meditation. The third half-hour will be an informal discussion about our meditation experiences and shared interests leading to a better frame of mind, health and wellbeing.

During these seven sessions, Professor Ghista will present information on the following topics:

1.  General Introduction and overview of the series.

2.  New science paradigm: Consciousness to cosmology, to life origin and evolution.

3.  Meditation: Ideating on consciousness, promoting psychosomatic health & wellbeing, liberation and enlightenment.

4.  Basic concepts of morality, as the foundation of spirituality.

5.  Fundamentals of meditation practice.

6.  Values inculcated from meditation, at the personal and societal level: In education, living and societal values.

7.  Promoting a neo-humanistic outlook and cosmic thinking, towards bringing about a more socially aware, human-centric and enlightened civilization.

Meditation is connecting our unit mind or individual mind with the Cosmic Mind, and thereby getting liberation from our embedded impressions in the mind, to attain a divine state of enlightenment.  We will practice meditation in each session.

An important result of meditation is spiritual development.  As part of this series, we will discuss how to incorporate this spiritual development in our personal lives and in our communities.

Finally, through this series we will aim to support (1) a neo-humanistic outlook, elevating ourselves beyond ‘narrow isms’ which have plagued our society, and (2) acquire cosmic thinking. Altogether, this series will help support our mutual goals of incorporating meditation into our daily lives, in leading to a more spiritual outlook, improved health and overall wellbeing.

The dates of the series are as follows: November 20, November 27. December 5 (NOTE: This is a Wednesday evening), December 11, December 18, January 8, January 15, January 22, January 29 and February 12.

Advance registration for the entire series is required. You can also call Adult Services at 508-393-5025 x5 and the library staff will register you on the phone.

For more information, please call 508-393-5025 x5.

Beginning Photography Series
6:45 PM - 8:15 PM

Join professional photographer Jeanine Vitale of Prism Point Photography and unlock the potential of your camera!

Its fabulous tools are waiting to help you create beautiful pictures.

This six-week class will introduce you to basic techniques you can add onto and use for the rest of your life.

Learn what those magical terms mean and how to apply them. Starting with composition and point of focus, we’ll move onto automatic settings, semi-automatic, and manual settings. Covering F-stop, ISO, shutter speed, use of flash and evaluating light we’ll end with a glimpse of some of the fabulous uses of Photoshop.

For these classes ideally, you should have access to a digital camera that has at least semi-automatic settings (i.e. A, Av, T, Tv) or indicated by icons such as a flower, a runner, a mountain. Even better is a camera that goes to full manual mode where you can learn to control the F-stop, shutter speed and ISO separately. While the ideas of story-telling, composition and point of focus can be applied to any form of visual art, a cell phone camera will not allow you to fully practice the other techniques and tools. However, you’re welcome to observe any class with or without another form of camera.

Students are encouraged to practice on their own between classes and are encouraged (though not required) to submit pictures for viewing by the class or privately by the teacher for additional assistance. All class notes and examples will be posted on Drop Box, which is  very useful if you need to miss a class or just want to review the material later.

The following topics will be covered during the 6 weeks:

- An overview of photography basics; telling a story

- Composition and point of focus; semi-automatic settings

- Manual settings - f-stop, shutter speed, ISO

- Lighting: artificial, natural and ambient. This topic takes two weeks.

- Using Photoshop basics to manipulate images; assembling your story

Cost: $50 per person for the 6-part series payable to the Northborough Free Library (must be paid in advance of the first class).

Meditation for Health and Well-Being Series (Dhanjoo Ghista)
6:30 PM - 8:00 PM

We are pleasaed to present a 7-part series on Meditation called Meditation Practice for Health and Well-being.

First Reformed Film and Discussion
7:00 PM - 10:00 PM

Reverend Ernst Toller (Ethan Hawke) is a solitary, middle-aged parish pastor at a small Dutch Reform church in upstate New York on the cusp of celebrating its 250th anniversary. Once a stop on the Underground Railroad, the church is now a tourist attraction catering to a dwindling congregation, eclipsed by its nearby parent church, Abundant Life, with its state-of-the-art facilities and 5,000-strong flock. When a pregnant parishioner (Amanda Seyfried) asks Reverend Toller to counsel her husband, a radical environmentalist, the clergyman finds himself plunged into his own tormented past, and equally despairing future, until he finds redemption in an act of grandiose violence. First Reformed is a gripping thriller about a crisis of faith that is at once personal, political, and planetary.

This film is rated R and is for adults. Registration is not required, but attendees should plan to participate in both the viewing and the discussion of the film.

Fed Up Film and Discussion
6:30 PM - 10:00 PM

Fed Up is a documentary that upends the conventional wisdom of why we gain weight and how to lose it and unearths a dirty secret of the American food industry-far more of us get sick from what we eat than anyone has previously realized. Filmmaker Stephanie Soechtig and TV journalist Katie Couric lead us through this potent exposé that uncovers why-despite media attention, the public's fascination with appearance, and government policies to combat childhood obesity-generations of American children will now live shorter lives than their parents did.

Fed Up focuses on the harm sugar does in the body. It provides a lot of statistics, historical facts and figures, research, and interviews that will teach both kids and adults about healthy eating. Rated PG, the large amount of data in the film may be too overwhelming for children. Fed Up is more appropriate for tweens, teens, and adults.

Registration is not required, but attendees should plan to participate in both the viewing and the discussion of the film.

RBG Film and Discussion
2:00 PM - 5:00 PM

RBG is a documentary about the life, career, and enduring legacy of Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg. The film follows Ginsburg's journey from her girlhood in Brooklyn to her appointment to the highest court in the land. Along the way, it details how she graduated as one of only nine women in her law class, overcame years of gender discrimination, and argued milestone rights cases before the Supreme Court. Through interviews with Ginsburg, her adult children, colleagues, friends, and even clients, the filmmakers also explore how Ginsburg has become a cultural icon (aka "the Notorious RBG").

Rated PG, there are a few insults and brief verbal/textual references to topics including rape, abortion, and death in childbirth, but overall this is a tween-friendly documentary with messages about integrity and equality. Registration is not required, but attendees should plan to participate in both the viewing and the discussion of the film.

Bag It Film and Discussion
2:00 PM - 5:00 PM

Americans use 60,000 plastic bags every five minutes-single-use disposable bags that we mindlessly throw away. But where is "away?" Where do the bags and other plastics end up, and at what cost to our environment, marine life and human health? Bag It follows "everyman" Jeb Berrier as he navigates our plastic world. Jeb is not a radical environmentalist, but an average American who decides to take a closer look at our cultural love affair with plastics. Jeb's journey in this documentary film starts with simple questions: Are plastic bags really necessary? What are plastic bags made from? What happens to plastic bags after they are discarded? Jeb looks beyond plastic bags and discovers that virtually everything in modern society-from baby bottles, to sports equipment, to dental sealants, to personal care products-is made with plastic or contains potentially harmful chemical additives used in the plastic-making process. When Jeb's journey takes a personal twist, we see how our crazy-for-plastic world has finally caught up with us and what we can do about it. Today. Right now.

Registration is not required, but attendees should plan to participate in both the viewing and the discussion of the film.
