POE, TIMES TWO...Twin tales of mystery, murder and...mortar
2:00 PM - 4:00 PM

The Northborough Free Library is pleased to present a special one-man performance entitled POE, TIMES TWO on Saturday, October 27th at 2 PM, written and performed by New York actor Greg Oliver Bodine, of North Shore Theater Productions (http://www.nstg.org/poetimetwo.htm).

A double-bill of short, one-man plays adapted from two classic stories of mystery and horror, "The Cask of Amontillado" and "The Black Cat", by Edgar Allan Poe. One actor. Two classic horror stories!

The Cask of Amontillado - a Venetian nobleman narrates a chilling tale of revenge involving his friend, Fortunato, against whom he has carried a grudge for an offense that is never fully explained -- an altogether sinister tale of one man’s thirst for vengeance, born from arrogance and jealousy!

The Black Cat - a condemned man speaks from his prison cell on the night before he is to be executed for the brutal murder of his wife -- Poe’s masterful study of domestic violence, guilt and one man’s descent into madness … a journey that illustrates the ability of the human mind to observe and comment on its own destruction, without being able to stop it.

Greg Oliver Bodine (Montresor / Alfred)  is an actor and writer who has performed his  critically acclaimed, solo adaptation of Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol at theaters, libraries, colleges and high schools since 2003.  He currently works as a Nassau / Suffolk BOCES-registered Theatre Teaching Artist in the Long Island School Partnership Program with Tilles Center for the Performing Arts in Brookville, NY.

“Poe, I think many people would agree, is the American Godfather of Gothic horror,” says Bodine. “He’s also widely credited as one of the earliest practitioners of the short story, believing firmly that ‘quality work should be brief and focus on a specific, single effect.’ As an actor and playwright, I always like to leave my audiences wanting more, so the shared themes of horror and revenge in these two stories make them perfect vehicles to combine my passions for classic literature, drama and storytelling in the genre of the macabre.”

A must-see for Poe enthusiasts and fans of mystery and horror!  Suitable for adults and for children (ages 12 and over).  Just in time for Halloween!  Directed by DeLisa M. White.

TICKETS

Tickets are $5.00 per person and must be purchased in person at the Library’s main check-out desk. Seating will be general admission, no reserved seating. One performance only.

Fall Music Series: Lori Diamond & Frank Abatelli
2:00 PM - 3:30 PM

Bostonian Lori Diamond and New Yorker Fred Abatelli, have been creating and performing music together since their "destined" meeting on Myspace in 2007. These two seasoned players have put the time in, supporting other successful musical acts, but have now emerged to the forefront - and not a moment too soon!

Lori, an award winning songwriter (finalist, Great American Songwriting Contest 2010, Best Female Vocalist, Pulse Magazine 2011, 2012), combines alluring, soulful vocals and seasoned piano playing with Fred's solid finger work and clever phrasing on both bass and guitar. Their songs explore the many facets of the human condition with hope and an esoteric sensibility. Fans of Norah Jones, Sarah MacLachlan and Joni Mitchell, quickly become fans of Lori & Fred as they explore Jazz, Acoustic, Folk, Pop, Gospel and blues influences and gently infuse them into their own fresh and original style.

With two highly acclaimed CDs under their belts, "LIFTED" is the title of the third, newest collection of their complex, heartfelt songs. The duo has crafted exquisite melodies that employ everything from retro jazz stylings to hypnotic meditations. Songs of eternal love, self-acceptance, and powerful life lessons will soothe, excite and uplift simultaneously!

Lori & Fred have been showcased on the main stage of the legendary, Falcon Ridge Folk Festival and have also headlined at many prominent music festivals. Sometimes as openers and other times as accompanists, Lori & Fred have performed alongside John Gorka, Peter Yarrow, Joan Osborne, Amy Ray, David Wilcox, Michael Johnson, Susan Werner, Vance Gilbert, Ellis Paul, Tracy Grammer, Brother Sun, Brooks Williams, Jimmy Lafave, Mary Gauthier and more!

LDFA continues to offer transcendent performances throughout Northeast while joyously connecting with new friends and fans. Their "Lifted" tour is happening right now throughout the North East and you can find ever - evolving news as well as music samples at www.LDFAmusic.com.

A portion of proceeds from Lori & Fred's CD sales goes directly to www.NEADS.org.

Join us for this third concert in our Fall Music Series, which is generously funded by the Friends of the Northborough Library, and help us celebrate the Library's 150th anniversary! No resgitration is required. Refreshments will be served.

An Evening with Bestselling Author and U.S. District Judge Michael A. Ponsor
7:00 PM - 8:00 PM

Judge Michael A. Ponsor was appointed as a U.S. District Judge in 1994 and has presided over hundreds of trials in federal court in Springfield, MA, including a five-month murder trial of a Veterans Administration nurse that was the first capital case in Massachusetts in over fifty years.  The experience prompted him to write his first novel, The Hanging Judge, a fictional account of the death penalty trial.  Published in 2013, this novel became a New York Times bestseller.  His second novel, also featuring a federal criminal trial, The One-Eyed Judge, appeared in 2017.  The case centers on the prosecution of an Amherst College professor, charged with receiving child pornography.

Judge Ponsor will speak about a life in court that has prompted him to turn to fiction writing.  Many books are written about criminal trials, but relatively few from the judge's perspective.  Judge Ponsor will discuss the process of crafting his books with the goal both of telling a good story and of taking the reader up onto the bench for an insider's view of the moral, psychological, and practical challenges inherent in our system of justice.

This event is free but registration is required.

Fall Music Series: Craig Harris: Heartbeat: A Native American Musical Experience

Fall Music Series: Holiday Concert with the Assabet Valley Mastersingers
1:00 PM - 3:00 PM

Join us for this fifth and final concert in our Fall Music Series, which is generously funded by the Friends of the Northborough Library, as we celebrate the Library's 150th anniversary this year! Assabet Valley Mastersingers is a regional chorus with performances in Shrewsbury, Westborough, Northborough, Southborough, and Marlborough.  AVM presents three major concerts a year in November, March, and May plus a Messiah Sing with audience participation in December.  Dedicated to perpetuating the love and appreciation of choral music through the use of personal and expressive vocal music, AVM enriches the quality of life for the people of the Assabet River Valley.  With a commitment to performance excellence and innovative programming, these talented local vocalists with professional instrumentalists and vocal soloists perform celebrated masterworks, lesser known masterworks and commissioned compositions.

Membership in the Mastersingers is diverse, representing over twenty towns at present.  Some singers are professionally trained, while others have only school or church choir experience.  Members purchase their own music, pay an annual dues fee, and participate in a fall fund drive to support the organization’s operating budget.

Dr. Robert Eaton, founder and Director of the Mastersingers, is Minister of Music at First Baptist Church of Lexington, MA. (www.fbclexington.org)

No registraiton is required. Refreshments will be served.
