Watercolor Painting Class
1:30 PM - 3:30 PM

Have you always wished you could paint, but didn't think you had the ability? With proper instruction, you'll be surprised! An introductory watercolor painting class will be offered on Wednesdays, September 27-November 1, from 1:30-3:30 PM. No drawing or painting experience is required, and all of the materials you need to get started - high quality paints, brushes, paper - will be provided. By the time you have finished this six week class, you will quite likely have at least one painting you will want to mat and frame, and maybe a new interest. This class will be taught by Marilyn Myers, who has a degree in Art and Art Education from Carnegie Mellon University. Space will be limited to 12 people, and there is a fee of $60 for the series.

The Friends of the Northern Tier Library are pleased to present their annual Author's Night. This year's event will feature four local authors, all of whom have written their books while pursuing careers in teaching, police work, psychotherapy and management.

  • It's What I Want by Alex Barie
  • Murder at Mountain Tavern by Greg Dillensnyder
  • In the Shadow of a Badge and The White Light of Grace by Lillie Leonardi
  • Moraine State Park by Polly Shaw

Each of the authors will speak about their book and writing process, followed by a time for questions. The evening will conclude with refreshments and book signings. Registration is required.

Ghosts and Legends of Western Pennsylvania

Join author and historian Thomas White as he explores the history and cultural meaning behind some of our region's supernatural legends. Hear the story of whispering dead beneath the Black Cross, the ghostly woman of Summit Cut Bridge, the phantoms of Pittsburgh's steel mills, and the ghosts and cults that stalk Blue Mist Road. Learn the truth about the curse at the old Quaker Church, Judge Reddick's contest with the Devil, and many other spooky tales. Registration is required.

Introduction to Stamp Collecting

The Butler Stamp Club will present an "Introduction to Stamp Collecting" on Thursday, October 26 at 7:00 PM.  During the evening, you will learn about philately - one of the world's most popular hobbies, which has been enjoyed by presidents and kings!

Three long time collectors will share their knowledge in the following presentations:

1.  An introduction to the hobby

2.  A discussion of stamp values

3. Special topical collections, such as stamps featuring ships, or dogs, etc.

Families are invited to celebrate Halloween at the library! Come dressed up in costume for our parade around the library, trick or treating included! There will also be crafts and a Halloween Piñata!

Our Makerspace will also be available during the Halloween Party, where attendees can create a pumpkin decoration out of craft paper or recycled book pages, and make an LED campfire.

This program is for children of all ages, and registration is required. This program will be held on the lower level.

Parents are encouraged to join us for an hour-long workshop hosted by Dr. Bekir Mugayitoglu on discovering various STEM activities for their children. This workshop will situate STEM into the everyday lives of families to help their kids understand complexity, think critically, and create confidently. Parents will be provided with activities that emphasize three crucial mindsets to grow their children's STEM capacity and their use of 21st century skills. During the workshop we will make parents, families, and mentors more aware of how to integrate STEM into their kids' day-to-day. There is no fee for this program, but registration is required.

Classes are $40.00 each and will be limited to 20 attendees, so advance registration is required.

Zumba
6:30 PM - 7:15 PM

Zumba is a strong cardio and muscular workout, incorporating dances such as merengue, salsa, hip hop, and belly dancing. Classes will be held on Mondays, November 6-December 18. If paid in full prior to the first class, the fee is $35 for the whole session, or you can pay as you go at $7 per class. The fee must be paid at the time of registration. This class will be held on the library's lower level.
