Zumba is a strong cardio and muscular workout, incorporating dances such as merengue, salsa, hip hop, and belly dancing. Classes will be held on Mondays, January 8-February 26. A fee of $40 is charged for the series if paid in advance, or you can pay as you go at $7 per class. The fee must be paid at the time of registration. This class will be held on the library's lower level.

What is the Makerspace and what will it offer? Our goal is to engage our community in an interactive way. Open Monday through Thursday, 2:30-5:30 PM, at Northern Tier Library's Pine Center located in Pine-Richland High School, the Makerspace will encourage users to do arts, crafts, woodworking, sewing, and other projects. This space was made possible thanks to contributions by the Mae Dreier Memorial Fund and the Sprout Fund.

Crock Pot Cooking

This program has been cancelled due to low registration.

Would you like to save time in the kitchen, but still have healthy dinners for your family? Join Chef Carol at the library for a new cooking class! In just one class, we will prepare four freezer-ready meals. When you're ready, just defrost the meal in the refrigerator overnight, and cook on LOW in your crock pot the next day. All of the dishes are wholesome, hearty, delicious, AND cream soup-free!!

The four meals will be:

Fiesta Chicken Soup
Cheesy Chicken and Broccoli Casserole
Louisiana Bayou Chicken
Crock Pot Beef Stroganoff

Just bring your favorite chopping knife, cutting board, measuring cups, and a rubber spatula. The cost for the class will be $100 per person - four meals serving 4-6 people works out to less than $2.50 per serving. There will be a limit of 20 attendees, so advance registration and payment is required. No refunds can be issued for this program if a patron does not attend after submitting payment.

Chess Tournament

Join us for the 45th Annual Library Chess Tournament on Saturday, March 10 beginning at 9:30 AM. Competition will be held on two levels: the Junior Division for grades K-4, and the Senior Division for grades 5-8. The winners in each division will represent the library in the Allegheny County Chess Tournament held in late March.

Please stop by the library anytime before the event to fill out a registration card or call us at 724-449-2665 to complete one over the phone. It is important that we have the participants' names and grades before the event. On the day of the tournament, please bring a chess set and board and make sure to arrive 15 minutes early.

Advance registration is required.

Classes are $40 each, and will be limited to 20 attendees, so advance registration is required. No refunds can be issued for this program if a patron does not attend after submitting payment.

The Beautiful Monarch Butterfly

The monarch butterfly is one of North America's most easily recognized species with its wing colors of orange, black, and white. It is also a species in peril due to climate changes, loss of habitat, and pesticides. Join Kimberly Vensel, a photographer who also raises monarch butterflies, for an educational program. Learn about the monarch's life cycle and amazing migration displayed through Kimberly's photographs. She will also discuss what we can all do to help, including the best native plants to grow in our own gardens. There is no charge for this program, but advance registration is required.

Theater games are for anyone looking to improve confidence, gain focus, and add positivity into their daily life. While having fun and making new friends, children will improve their listening skills, collaborate with peers, and spark their imaginations. Sheri Ward leads this one-hour workshop helping children learn to unlock their inner creativity in a fun and supportive place.

Kids ages 6-12 years are invited to this free workshop. No experience is needed, but registration is required.

The fee must be paid at the time of registration. This class will be held on the library's lower level.

Chef Carol Nardello has worked in restaurants, owned a catering business, collaborated on three cookbooks, and taught at three cooking schools. Most recently, while living in Hawaii, she worked as a Chef Instructor at the Culinary Institute of the Pacific. She and her husband now live in Wexford.

Classes are $40 each, and will be limited to 20 attendees, so advance registration is required. No refunds can be issued for this program if a patron does not attend after submitting payment.

Battle of the Books: North Edition

The Northern Tier Library, along with seven other libraries in Northern Allegheny County, will participate in a Battle of the Books this spring. Get a team together (3-5 people) and prepare to go head-to-head with readers from around the area. The event will take place on Thursday, April 12 at Sieb's Pub on Babcock Boulevard, beginning at 7:00 PM.

The entrance fee is $10 per team and you can register online at: http://bit.ly/2DNCq6A or you can register and pay in person at the library.

The deadline to register your team is March 23.

Would you like your garden to be in color for three seasons of the year? Find out how to do it as Master Gardener Bill Goff presents "Perennials in the Garden: Three Seasons of Color". Via a Powerpoint presentation, Mr. Goff will look closely at one perennial garden and how it changes through the growing season. Suggested plants will be recommended, and care and maintenance of the perennial border will also be discussed.
