Tuesday at 2: Catching More Fish on St. Joe Bay
Catching More Fish on St Joe Bay
Captain Phil Cox. Phil’s Charter Service

You may—or may not—be surprised to learn that 90% of the fish are located in 10% of the water, and 10% of the fisherman catch 90% of the fish! Increase your odds of a better catch with tips from Captain Phil Cox on where to fish and the mental aspects of fishing. As a bonus, Captain Phil will share his favorite recipes for cooking up your catch.

Captain Phil grew up near Huntington, WV and attended college in Ohio where he graduated with a BS in Marketing. He fishes St Joe Bay, East Bay, and the intercoastal waterway and feels truly blessed to do what he loves every day. He lives with his wife Chrystal in Port St Joe and has been married 32 years.

The eight-week Tuesdays at Two lecture series is free and open to the public. Refreshments will be served.

Kokedama Workshop
Garden Club of Port St. Joe

What is Kokedama you say? A quick Google search will tell you that it is a ball of soil, covered with moss, on which an ornamental plant grows. The idea has its origins in Japan, where it is a combination of the bonsai and kusamono planting styles. This “hands on” workshop is led by members of the Garden Club of Port St. Joe. After the session, you will walk away with your very own planting to take home and enjoy—but don’t forget to water it!

Tuesday at 2: Rum Runners & Moonshiners of Old Florida
Rum Runners & Moonshiners of Old Florida
Robert Buccellato, Author

'Rumrunners and Moonshiners of Old Florida' is an adventurous tale about real people during one of the most compelling moments in the state's history. Our presenter, author Robert Buccellato, will tell us the stories of the times: about crooked sheriffs aiding local shiners, a variety of period cocktail recipes, more than one hundred rare images, stories of the temperance movement and sea battles between rumrunners and the coast guard. Discover the methods used to make shine and transport smuggled booze—including an insider’s knowledge on the vast network of local bootlegging. PLUS he will reveal a heretofore unknown secret: there is now physical evidence that Mobster Al Capone was a frequent visitor in the panhandle.

Robert Buccellato is the author of Florida Governors Lasting Legacies, Jimmy Carter In Plains The Presidential Hometown, Finding Dan McCarty, and Rum runners and Moonshiners of Old Florida. Buccellato was the Historian for the Clerk of Courts for Leon County, a position created for him, between 2015-2017. In 2017 he was appointed by Tallahassee Mayor Andrew Gillum to the Canopy Roads Advisory Committee. Robert lives in Tallahassee Florida with his Wife Stephanie and their sons Croston and Noah.

Tuesday at 2: Turtles in Gulf County
Turtles in Gulf County
Jessica Swindell, Volunteer Coordinator, St. Joseph Peninsula Turtle Patrol, Florida Coastal Conservancy, and Forgotten Coast Sea Turtle Center

Gulf County is home to more sea turtles than anywhere else in Northwest Florida and they play important ecological, cultural, and economic roles in our area. During the presentation we'll learn why sea turtles are good for us and what we can do to help them.

Jessica Swindall has served as Volunteer Coordinator for the St. Joseph Peninsula Turtle Patrol since 2010 and was a founding board member of the Florida Coastal Conservancy and Forgotten Coast Sea Turtle Center. She received her B.A. degree in Psychology from the University of Alabama in 2007, and she received her M.S. degree in Wildlife Ecology and Conservation from the University of Florida in 2015. From 2010 to 2015, she worked with the University of Florida Marine Turtle Research Group tagging nesting female sea turtles on St. Joseph Peninsula and capturing and tagging juvenile sea turtles in St. Joseph Bay. Currently as Volunteer Coordinator for the St. Joseph Peninsula Turtle Patrol, she conducts sea turtle nesting surveys, manages volunteers, develops and implements sea turtle education and outreach programs, and submits sea turtle nesting data to FWC. Jessica has also been conducting sea turtle nesting surveys as a volunteer at St. Joseph Peninsula State Park since 2012, and is the current President of the Friends of St. Joseph State Parks, an organization in which she has served since 2014.

Denny Diamond Concert

Denny Diamond & The Jewels is a tribute to the music of Neil Diamond. The trio’s performance is not based on sparkly shirts or concert versions of songs, but rather Neil’s words and music. The songs that make up the set list are not just those songs that charted in the top 100, but encompass Neil Diamond’s vast library of work.

Denny, the trio’s lead singer and dad, has pipes that greatly resemble Neil Diamond’s distinct baritone voice. He’s been performing his tribute since ‘2000’ after an appearance on Dick Clark’s, “Your Big Break”. “I’m not interested in whether I resemble Neil Diamond but would rather guests walk away from our performance having enjoyed great music they know and love. The trio likes to expose guests to songs that never made the radio. And for avid fans of Neil’s music, we love being able to fill their requests”.

An Update on the Re-opening the State Park

Dennis Whitley, Park Ranger at the T.H. Stone Memorial St. Joseph Peninsula State Park

Hurricane Michael created two “islands” in the State Park on the St. Joe Peninsula thanks to a breech.  What is the environmental impact of the storm on the park itself and the species, many of which are endangered, who reside there? Through a slide show of photos you’ll see the destroyed campgrounds and picnic area at the park and also get an update on the construction work and the projected opening for day-use. Dennis will outline the daily dynamics of the breech in the park, as well as the condition of the dunes in the campgrounds section of the park.

Dennis Whitley has been a ranger at T.H. Stone for a year and a half and in this role serves as the Interpretive Chairman for the park. In his previous career he was a radio news director in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. His wife, Joanne, works at the Library, and they are the parents of a 24-year-old daughter named Lane who also lives in Port St Joe.

Tuesday at 2: Spoon River Anthology
The St. Andrews Readers Theatre Troupe is presenting select monologues from American poet, Edgar Lee Master's Spoon River Anthology (1915). Edgar Lee Masters created a series of compelling free verse monologues of a time gone by in which former citizens of a mythical mid-western town speak touchingly about their lives. Their voices speak about disappointment, dashed dreams, but also love and hope - themes which are universal and resonate with us today. Program is free to attend and open to the public.

Up to now perhaps the most infamous storms to hit the area would be the two catastrophic hurricanes that hit the area in September of 1844--dealing the final blow to the abandoned city of Old St. Joseph.  Through his presentation, history buff Kesley Colbert will tell us about the storms and pay homage to those from our past who created the St. Joe of today from the old doomed city of the 19th Century and help us gain a better “sense of history” of our beloved community.

Kesley was born and raised in McKenzie, Tennessee. He graduated from The University of the South in 1969, then moved to Port St. Joe just as fast as he could, and taught high school history for 12 years, ran an abstract and title company for 4 years, elected Property Appraiser of Gulf County in 1984 and served in that capacity until retiring in 2013. He has coached high school football in St. Joe in six separate decades and has written a “weakly” column for the local paper for the past 35 years.  Kez enjoys, in no particular order, reading anything about history, repairing antique clocks, golf, running, the St. Louis Cardinals, Chicago Bears, Chuck Berry, Jerry Lee Lewis and Melba Montgomery music, old western movies and telling his grandchildren about the time he floated down the Cascade River with Tom, Bill, Joke, Luke, Max……and Grover Cleveland Alexander!  He and Miss Cathy have been married for 44+ years and are proud of their family including their two sons, daughters in law and six grandchildren.
