Radical Raptors: Adventures Working with Birds of Prey

Lynda White, Audubon Center for Birds of Prey, Retired EagleWatch Coordinator

Lynda White was an empty nester (pun intended) looking for an interesting volunteer position when she began to work at the Audubon Center for Birds of Prey in Maitland, Florida.  Soon the volunteer position grew into the best job anyone could dream of and she spent 16 years at the Center working with raptors and as an EagleWatch Coordinator. Her career working with wildlife was rewarding, and at times both exciting and laugh-out-loud crazy.  During her presentation, Lynda will share her experiences and fascination with these birds who play a critical role at the top of the food chain. We will learn how vital raptors are to a healthy ecosystem and how they are uniquely adapted to their environment. She’ll share tips on how to spot raptors while birdwatching and get more enjoyment out of viewing them. Lynda and her husband Jim moved to Gulf County six years ago for some peace and quiet after living in Central Florida for 36 years. As Gulf County residents they are closer to their four grandchildren, love traveling and exploring this beautiful slice of Florida and spending time at the beach with Belle, their rescue dog and graduate of the DAWGS in Prison program.

Tuesday at 2: Sea Turtles of Sea Turtles of Gulf County

Jessica Swindall, Volunteer Coordinator, St. Joseph Peninsula Turtle Patrol, Florida Coastal Conservancy and Forgotten Coast Sea Turtle Center

Gulf County is home to more sea turtles than anywhere else in Northwest Florida—and they play an important ecological, cultural, and economic role in our area. During this Tuesdays at Two presentation, we'll learn why sea turtles are good for us and what we can do to help them. Jessica Swindall became interested in turtles by volunteering and has served as Volunteer Coordinator for the St. Joseph Peninsula Turtle Patrol since 2010.  She was a founding board member of the Florida Coastal Conservancy and Forgotten Coast Sea Turtle Center. From 2010 to 2015, she worked with the University of Florida Marine Turtle Research Group tagging nesting female sea turtles on St. Joseph Peninsula and capturing and tagging juvenile sea turtles in St. Joseph Bay.  Currently as Volunteer Coordinator for the St. Joseph Peninsula Turtle Patrol, she conducts sea turtle nesting surveys, manages volunteers, develops and implements sea turtle education and outreach programs, and submits sea turtle nesting data to FWC.  Jessica has also been conducting sea turtle nesting surveys as a volunteer at St. Joseph Peninsula State Park since 2012, and is the current President of the Friends of St. Joseph State Park, an organization she has served since 2014. She received her B.A. degree in Psychology from the University of Alabama in 2007 and her M.S. degree in Wildlife Ecology and Conservation from the University of Florida in 2015.

Tuesday at 2: Saving an American Treasure

Georgia Ackerman, Riverkeeper and Executive Director at Apalachicola Riverkeeper

The Apalachicola River has Florida’s largest river flow volume and supports the entire Apalachicola Bay and eastern Gulf of Mexico.  Because of its ecological and economic significance in the region the Apalachicola River has achieved numerous special designations, such as Outstanding Florida Water, and is truly an American treasure. During this presentation we welcome Georgia Ackerman, Riverkeeper and Executive Director at Apalachicola Riverkeeper as our speaker. Georgia joined the Apalachicola Riverkeeper team in December 2017 and has been involved with the organization for more than a decade as a business sponsor, a program volunteer and board member.

Georgia believes outside play and wild places are fundamental to both the health of humans and the planet. At the same time, she knows people depend on this river system for their livelihoods.  For these reasons, people deeply care about the Apalachicola River—and the Bay that it nourishes—and deserves our long-term protection and restoration efforts.

Georgia is an avid kayaker and outdoor enthusiast. She ran a north Florida ecotourism company for nearly a decade where she spent time learning about the Apalachicola River system and began volunteering with Apalachicola Riverkeeper.  After selling her business in 2013, she was recruited to lead a regional conservation awareness initiative at Tall Timbers. Georgia has also worked with the Red Hills Small Farm Alliance to help promote local, sustainable farming.
