Midnight Train: Harriet Tubman on the Underground Railroad

Harriet Tubman the first African-American will replace Andrew Jackson, on the $20 bill in 2020. Many of our youth and adults of today don’t know about Harriet Tubman and her contributions to build a greater nation allowing all its citizens the privileges held in the constitution.

Mary J. Kelly portrays Harriet Tubman during her years as a slave, her journey to freedom, and her endeavors to help others flee northward. Mary’s portrayal of Harriet incorporates a storytelling style utilizing characterization, song, and movement creating a realistic view of being enslaved. Harriet’s story is one of triumph and survival under the harshest conditions one can imagine. This performance provides Florida youth and communities a glimpse of the amazing woman that to be featured on the $20 bill.  Program free and open to all ages.

Midnight Train: Harriet Tubman on the Underground Railroad

The Corinne Costin Gibson Memorial Public Library is partnering with The Joe Center for the Arts. It will be held at The Joe Center for the Arts (201 Reid Ave. Port St. Joe, FL 32456).

Tuesday at 2: Girl Waits with Gun Skype Book Club with author Amy Stewart

Girl Waits With Gun Skype Book Club will be with New York Times bestselling author, Amy Stewart. https://www.amystewart.com/  Houghton Mifflin Harcourt has included cool "Constance Kopp" giveaways including signed book plates, coloring posters, and temporary tattoos.

Book: Girl Waits With Gun by Amy Stewart

Description: Constance Kopp doesn’t quite fit the mold. She towers over most men, has no interest in marriage or domestic affairs, and has been isolated from the world since a family secret sent her and her sisters into hiding fifteen years ago. One day a belligerent and powerful silk factory owner runs down their buggy, and a dispute over damages turns into a war of bricks, bullets, and threats as he unleashes his gang on their family farm. When the sheriff enlists her help in convicting the men, Constance is forced to confront her past and defend her family — and she does it in a way that few women of 1914 would have dared.

Tuesday @ 2 is a winter program that takes place every Tuesday at the Bay County Public Library during the months of February and March.  Programs are free and open to the public.

Beach Book Club

Beach Book Club meets every first Wednesday of the month at 10:30 am. New members are ALWAYS welcome!

This month's read: The Handmaid’s Tale by Margaret Atwood

Book Description: Offred is a Handmaid in the Republic of Gilead. She may leave the home of the Commander and his wife once a day to walk to food markets whose signs are now pictures instead of words because women are no longer allowed to read. She must lie on her back once a month and pray that the Commander makes her pregnant, because in an age of declining births, Offred and the other Handmaids are valued only if their ovaries are viable. Offred can remember the days before, when she lived and made love with her husband Luke; when she played with and protected her daughter; when she had a job, money of her own, and access to knowledge. But all of that is gone now.... Funny, unexpected, horrifying, and altogether convincing, The Handmaid's Tale is at once scathing satire, dire warning, and literary tour de force.

BCPL Book Club

The BCPL Book Club meets on the 2nd Thursday of each month @ 10:00 a.m.

At today's meeting, we will discuss: The Firebrand and the First Lady by Patricia Bell-Scott

Description: A finalist for the Andrew Carnegie Medal for Excellence in Nonfiction, and longlisted for the National Book Award, The Firebrand and the First Lady is the riveting history, two decades in the making, of how a brilliant writer-turned-activist and the first lady of the United States forged an enduring friendship that helped to alter the course of race and racism in America. In 1938, the twenty-eight-year-old Pauli Murray wrote a letter to the President and First Lady, Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt, protesting racial segregation in the South. Eleanor wrote back. So began a friendship that would last for a quarter of a century, as Pauli became a lawyer, principal strategist in the fight to protect Title VII of the 1964 Civil Rights Act and a co-founder of the National Organization of Women, and Eleanor became a diplomat and first chair of the United Nations Commission on Human Rights.
