Artist for July: Erin Remaley

The artist for the month is Erin Remaley. She will be exhibiting her work the month of July.  Her work includes watercolor paintings, Linocut prints, and altered books. A reception will be held on Thursday, July 5th from 6-8pm and the public is welcome. Refreshments will be served.

From the artist:

is an elementary art teacher, painter, printmaker, and an altered book creator who lives and works in Pittsburgh, Pa. She gets her artistic talent from her maternal grandmother who fostered and nurtured her talent and love of art from an early age. She attended many art classes from her local library to Carnegie Museum of Art to Carnegie Mellon’s pre college classes. She went on to study Art and Design with a concentration in printmaking at Alfred University where she earned her BFA. She later went on to earn her MAT with an elementary and art teaching certifications.

Erin has always enjoyed painting. She started her art career as a child with her grandmother learning colors and spending late nights painting with her in her basement. She attended an oil painting with her grandmother and great-grandfather when she was 9 years old where she paint her first landscape. While she continued to paint landscapes in her early years, in her latest series of paintings, she changed from oil paints to watercolor and from realistic to abstract. The abstract watercolor paintings explores the use and characteristics of watercolor, the element of line, and the relationships of color.

While studying at Alfred University, Erin concentrated on printmaking. She took courses in traditional printmaking (etching, stone lithography, monotype, and linoleum cut), and in digital printmaking (four color separations, large scale prints from a printer). After graduating from Alfred, Erin took a break from art to work on her masters’ degree and teaching certifications. It was during this time she began to read a lot of books. It was from reading books that she was inspired to get back into printmaking. She began her printmaking comeback with the owl and book print. From there she took inspiration from the books she read, songs she heard, and buttons she found at a local independent fabric store.

Erin’s altered books stemmed from her love of printmaking. She wanted to explore a new medium and challenge herself in her art. The first altered book took over a month to complete, while she tried to figure out the process of creating layers, the tools to use, and how to bind the pages together. With many trials and errors, she figured it out and got the process time down from a month to about one or two weeks. Her inspiration for the altered books come from the books themselves in the tiles and content. Erin loves going to used books stores, libraries (The Squirrel’s Nest!), and book sales to find the perfect hardcover book.

Erin loves to work small-scale and combine the different mediums she works in by incorporating printmaking and buttons in the altered books and using the buttons with printmaking. During the summer she will stay up late, like she did with her grandmother, to make her art.

Erin opened her Etsy shop, After Midnight Ink, in 2009. She has exhibited work at Pittsburgh Filmmakers and at the Pittsburgh Gallery Crawl 2014. She has participated in local arts festivals an has her work in local gift shops. Her altered books inspired author Melanie Harlow to create a character who makes altered books in the book If You Were Mine.

August Artist James Sabulsky

Photography by James Sabulsky will be hung during the month of August at the library!  From the artist:

I currently live in Lower Burrell and graduated from art school in 2007 with a degree in graphic/web design. Since then, I spent 9 months working for the Walt Disney Company as an artist and now work a People’s Natural Gas. I have been taking photography for 10 years, but my interests have peaked over the past 2 years. I spend a lot of time in Pittsburgh, walking around our amazing city and capturing it. Also the same amount of time is spent driving around the country side seeing the sites that nature has provided. Over the past year I have traveled throughout Maryland, Virginia, and West Virginia visiting many of the small towns, historic sites, and natural beauties and photographing the entire time.

2:00 Tuesday Movie: 'Gifted'

Frank is raising his young niece Mary as a single parent in quiet coastal Florida. When she enters school, it quickly becomes apparent that she is a math genius. Though she is offered a scholarship at a school for gifted students, Frank resists, wanting Mary to have as normal a childhood as possible. Then Frank's mother, Evelyn, gets involved, insisting not only that the child be given every scholastic opportunity, but that she come to live with her in Boston. Lawyers are hired and a custody battle ensues. This is a thoughtful and well-acted film. Stars Chris Evans, McKenna Grace, Lindsay Duncan and Octavia Spencer. PG-13, 1hr. 40min.
