January Artist William DeTurck

The artist will be on display in our lower level gallery throughout the month of January.

From the artist:

W. TURK (William W. DeTurck): Born 1968 in Pittsburgh, PA,

grew up in Oakmont, attended Riverview High School; played football

I have been artistic since a young age; self-taught musician, magician, and artist. I started signing W.Turk as a kid and cannot tell you the reason why?

As a young man, I enjoyed sports and enjoyed a brief career as a center for the Pitt Panthers until a back injury cut those dreams short.

I enjoy all media and work in any scale. I have done many murals including a mural in the Oakmont Fire Hall and can paint or mimic any finish or walls and floors. I have been everything from a handyman to a building inspector and am currently renovating homes for a living.

I paint things that catch my eye, I have to feel some inspiration for it to convey to the canvass. I have displayed here some iconic figures:

* TOM PETTY

* THE MARLBORO MAN

* MOLLY HATCHET ALBUM COVER

Hope you enjoy!

There will be a reception for William on Thursday, January 17th from 6:00-8:00pm. Refreshments will be served and the public is welcome.

Teen Book Club

We're starting a Teen Book Club! If you're 13-18 years old and interested in getting together with your peers to discuss a specific book, this could be for you. We'll meet at 4:30pm on Tuesday, January 22. Snacks will be provided!

The first book will be Scythe, by award-winning author Neal Shusterman. It takes place in a perfect future where humanity has eradicated hunger, disease, war, misery, and even death. But to keep the population in check, they created the Scythes, an order of people whose sole job is to maintain the population size by killing others. Citra and Rowan are Scythe apprentices, learning what it means to take a life, and the further they get in their apprenticeships, the more they realize that not all is as it seems.

If you're interested, but have questions, call or stop by the library Monday-Wednesday after school and ask for Kate, or check out oakmontteens.wordpress.com or follow us on Twitter and Instagram for more information.

If you decide to participate, please stop by the library to check out a copy of the book starting December 10.

Psychological Principles of Personal and Spiritual Development' by Richard Valinsky

This seminar will examine personal and spiritual development.  Some of the material will be based on a book written by Dr. Valinsky, “Perennial Psychology of the Bible: The Internal Battle for Communion and Union with Divine Consciousness”.  The book is available from Amazon.com.  The book is not necessary for the seminar but is recommended.  The seminar will consist of lectures, discussion, and experimental exercises.  Please register for this event online or by calling the library at 412-828-9532.  10 sessions on Wednesdays from 11:30 to 12:30 beginning September 12th.  Free but donations are accepted.

Dr. Valinsky, a psychologist, has been a practicing psychotherapist for fifty years.  He was Director of the Holistic Center of Pittsburgh, Director of the Psychological Services of the Pain Management Program at St. Francis Medical Center, consulting psychologist to the pain management program at Presbyterian University Hospital under the directorship of Dr. Rubin Tenicella, and Director of the Buffalo New York branch of the Himalayan Institute of Yoga Science and Philosophy where he taught courses in meditation and Yoga philosophy and psychology.  He currently has a private practice of psychotherapy in Oakmont Pennsylvania.

He has studied various spiritual paths including Judaism (Kabballah), Christianity, Yoga, Native American, and the Sufi (Moslem) paths.  He has been a student of a Yoga master, Swami Rama, who initiated him into a meditation practice and a Native American (Lakota Sioux) medicine and Yuwipi man, Chief Luciano Perez, under whose role as the ceremonial leader he participated in Inipi and Yuwipi ceremonies and a vision quest.  His interest in spirituality grew out of his professional work as a psychologist to alleviate the suffering and also the absence of meaning and joy in the lives of many of the people who came to see him.  He has previously presented a meditation course at the Oakmont Library.

'The Good Neighbor: The Life and Work of Fred Rogers' by Maxwell King

Join Mystery Lovers Bookshop at the library as we present The Good Neighbor: The Life and Work of Fred Rogers with Maxwell King!  To register, click here.

Maxwell King, President & CEO of The Pittsburgh Foundation, who will be discussing his recent work The Good Neighbor: The Life and Work of Fred Rogers.

Fred Rogers (1928–2003) was an enormously influential figure in the history of television and in the lives of tens of millions of children. As the creator and star of Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood, he was a champion of compassion, equality, and kindness. Rogers was fiercely devoted to children and to taking their fears, concerns, and questions about the world seriously.

The Good Neighbor, the first full-length biography of Fred Rogers, tells the story of this utterly unique and enduring American icon. Drawing on original interviews, oral histories, and archival documents, Maxwell King traces Rogers’s personal, professional, and artistic life through decades of work, including a surprising decision to walk away from the show to make television for adults, only to return to the neighborhood with increasingly sophisticated episodes, written in collaboration with experts on childhood development. An engaging story, rich in detail, The Good Neighbor is the definitive portrait of a beloved figure, cherished by multiple generations.

Maxwell King‘s four-decade career includes the presidencies of two of the country’s largest philanthropies—The Pittsburgh Foundation and The Heinz Endowments—and the editorship of The Philadelphia Inquirer, one of the nation’s most influential daily newspapers. He also served as director of the Fred Rogers Center for Early Learning and Children’s Media at Saint Vincent College in Latrobe, Pennsylvania. King has served on boards and committees for many national and regional organizations, including the national Council on Foundations which he led as the first chair of its Ethics and Practices Committee and then as chair of the Council’s full board from 2006 to 2008.

Join Donna Knapp at the Library to play or learn to play American MahJong. Mahjong is a game of both skill and luck that originated in China many centuries ago. American mahjong (also sometimes spelled "Mah Jongg" or called "Maajh") is unique from Asian mahjong in several ways. American mahjong utilizes racks, jokers, "Hands and Rules" score cards and has several distinct gameplay mechanics. Although an American mahjong set can be used to play Chinese Mahjong, the rules that we will follow are for the American game.Donna is a retired teacher who lives in East Oakmont. The sessions are free and open to the public. If you already play bring your Mah Jong set and your friends; if you never played, there will always be a beginner's table. It's easy and it's fun.

Now a freelance photographer, Melissa has continued to work on projects for; LazorYost marketing, Twin Boros Soccer, #capturedPGH, Flashes of Hope at Childrens Hospital, and is a member of Photographers without Boarders. Her work is also on permanent display at Mystery Lovers Bookshop in Oakmont. Melissa's mission is to make photography accessible to everyone and help others cultivate their creativity through photography.

Kelly Dreher

Lost Pittsburgh: 1990-1993

When I first arrived in Pittsburgh in 1988 as a college freshman, I found a city just beginning to shed its industrial past; Dormant, decaying factories dotted the landscape but the sweet aroma of baking biscuits still flowed from Bakery Square. The first coffee shop opened and no one was entranced by a smartphone. These photos capture the people and landscape of the early 1990s, a brief but beautiful time—forever lost in the age of information and constant distraction.

TED Talk A/V Book Club

Join us at the Oakmont Library on the 2nd Wednesday of every month at 6:30pm for our new TED Talk A/V Book Club!

In this unique book club, we will be choosing from a series of TED Books and watching the companion talk at every meeting.  These books, on a variety of scientific, educational, and health related topics, are short enough to read in one sitting, but full of big ideas!  Each book has a companion talk that is less than 20 minutes.  At our meetings, we will watch the talk and then discuss the book and the talk together!  From the TED site: TED is a nonprofit devoted to spreading ideas, usually in the form of short, powerful talks (18 minutes or less). TED began in 1984 as a conference where Technology, Entertainment and Design converged, and today covers almost all topics — from science to business to global issues — in more than 100 languages.
