"A study at Tufts University found that students who read to dogs have better outcomes than students who read to humans.

They experienced a slight gain in reading ability and attitudes toward reading, while those who read to people experienced a

decrease on both measures. Even more noticeable, there was no attrition in the dog group, while one third of those reading

to humans failed to complete the program"- Library Journal

Read to Therapy Dogs Tinker Bell and Wendy

Need to practice your reading?  Well it starts here with Tinkerbell and Wendy, the Pawtucket Library therapy dogs!

Join the girls (including their human mom Dawn) and watch your reading improve along with your confidence at public speaking.*

Appointments are in 15 minute blocks, please call or email the library in advance.

RICBA Book Club for Kids: Stef Soto, Taco Queen

This month's book: Stef Soto, Taco Queen by Jennifer Torres

2019 RI Children's Book Award nominee

Summary: Seventh grader Estefania "Stef" Soto is itching to shake off the onion-and-cilantro embrace of Tia Perla, her family's taco truck. She wants nothing more than for her dad to get a normal job and for Tia Perla to be put out to pasture. It's no fun being known as the "Taco Queen" at school. But just when it looks like Stef is going to get exactly what she wants, and her family's livelihood is threatened, she will have to become the truck's unlikely champion.

A monthly book club for kids in elementary school. During Dec., Jan., and Feb, the books featured will include nominees for the 2019 RI Children's Book Award (RICBA) program. By participating in the sessions, kids in grades 3-5 will be eligble to vote for their favorite book in Feb. 2019 at the public library or at voting stations at their elementary school. Sign up in the Children's Library to get a copy of the book from the library. The first 15 kids who sign up will receive a FREE paperback copy of the book. When the free copies have been all given out, families can borrow a copy of the book from the library. Kids can read the book on their own or with someone else. All the readers are invited to attend the Book Club for Kids program on Saturday, Jan. 12th at 11:00am in the Children’s Caidin Room to talk about favorite parts and participate in trivia activities based on the book. Best for kids in grades 3-5 but all young readers are welcome.

Susie Schutt, Education Director from the GAMM Theatre, will be joining us from 11:30am - noon to lead us in theatre activities based on this month's book.

Supported through the library's Caidin Fund and the GAMM Theatre.
