Tween Book Club

Wednesdays, July 18, August 15, 5:30-6:30 PM

A new book club for middle-schoolers. Read great books, eat candy, and win prizes. Pearl River School District residents are always given priority.

July's Book: Doll Bones by Holly Black

Doll Bones

Zach, Poppy and Alice have been friends for ever. They love playing with their action figure toys, imagining a magical world of adventure and heroism. But disaster strikes when, without warning, Zach’s father throws out all his toys, declaring he’s too old for them. Zach is furious, confused and embarrassed, deciding that the only way to cope is to stop playing . . . and stop being friends with Poppy and Alice.

But one night the girls pay Zach a visit, and tell him about a series of mysterious occurrences. Poppy swears that she is now being haunted by a china doll – who claims that it is made from the ground-up bones of a murdered girl. They must return the doll to where the girl lived, and bury it. Otherwise the three children will be cursed for eternity . . .

Mad Science: Jurassic Encounter

Meet a Baby T Rex!

Almost everyone is curious about dinosaurs, but if dinosaurs are extinct then how do we know anything about them?  How big were they? What did they eat? Paleontology is not just about finding rare fossils – it is about what we learn from the fossils. Paleontologists are dinosaur detectives! This show helps explain what we know about dinosaurs and how we know it.

The audience will examine a variety of teeth and determine if they came from carnivores, herbivores, or omnivores. They will also handle coprolites (fossil poop!) and learn how big dinosaurs were by holding some huge bones. There will also be reenactments of events that could have changed the earth’s climate and brought about the end of the dinosaurs: volcanic eruptions and asteroid impacts.

This show also includes a visit from “Fluffy,” a 6-month old baby T. rex. A life size dinosaur is something you will NEVER FORGET!  Adults and kids alike will be in awe as they watch a dinosaur come to life in front of their eyes.

All ages are welcome!

Wither (The Chemical Garden, #1)

July's Book: Wither (The Chemical Garden #1) by Lauren DeStefano

By age sixteen, Rhine Ellery has four years left to live. She can thank modern science for this genetic time bomb. A botched effort to create a perfect race has left all males with a lifespan of 25 years, and females with a lifespan of 20 years. Geneticists are seeking a miracle antidote to restore the human race, desperate orphans crowd the population, crime and poverty have skyrocketed, and young girls are being kidnapped and sold as polygamous brides to bear more children.

When Rhine is kidnapped and sold as a bride, she vows to do all she can to escape. Her husband, Linden, is hopelessly in love with her, and Rhine can't bring herself to hate him as much as she'd like to. He opens her to a magical world of wealth and illusion she never thought existed, and it almost makes it possible to ignore the clock ticking away her short life. But Rhine quickly learns that not everything in her new husband's strange world is what it seems. Her father-in-law, an eccentric doctor bent on finding the antidote, is hoarding corpses in the basement. Her fellow sister wives are to be trusted one day and feared the next, and Rhine is desperate to communicate to her twin brother that she is safe and alive. Will Rhine be able to escape--before her time runs out?

Together with one of Linden's servants, Gabriel, Rhine attempts to escape just before her seventeenth birthday. But in a world that continues to spiral into anarchy, is there any hope for freedom?
