ZOOM: Virtual Walking Tour of DUMBO

Zoom Virtual Walking Tour

Virtual Walking Tour of DUMBO’s Historic Architecture

The neighborhood today known as DUMBO was once the center for the agricultural hamlet of Brooklyn, and grew into a center of commerce, shipping, and manufacturing. On this virtual walk, we will look at several eras of the neighborhood’s history reflected in its architecture. From the storage warehouses of the 1860s, to the reinforced concrete industrial buildings of the turn of the century, to the last remaining tenement building in the neighborhood, we will also examine how these buildings have been repurposed to create one of the most expensive residential and office districts in all of New York City.

Registration is not required.

Author Talk with David Feldman (ZOOM & In-Person)

Hybrid Author talk please call Roxanne to confirm 516-967-5777. This discussion will take place in our Bentley room (in person) as well as on zoom.

The Neighborhood follows the stories of four families, including the first Black family, the Thomas family, in the area of Valley Stream where he grew up. The children attend an actual Valley Stream high school — Valley Stream South.

The book is written in the third-person limited point of view, telling the story from one character’s perspective at a time, but jumping from the mind of one character to another, from family to family to include all of their similar yet different experiences, in the hopes of capturing the distilled emotion of what racial integration was like through a fictionalized, dramatic lens.

Join us to discuss Author David Feldman new book and to discuss his other literary works as well.

ZOOM: Barkley Hendricks presented by Thomas Germano

Zoom Program

Barkley L. Hendricks

Barkley L. Hendricks (1945-2017) was a contemporary American painter from Philadelphia who first worked in the medium of photography before attending Yale University in the 1960s. Hendricks is best known for his life-sized painted portraits beginning in the 1960s, of Black Americans living in urban areas. His painted figures have unique personalities, exuding attitude and style, and presented as contemporary steeped in pop culture yet are anchored in the history of art. Barkley Hendricks’s painted portraits combine an unconventional realism with a masterly execution. The subjects have a confrontational directness softened by their humorous titles.

Professor Thomas Germano will present a visual lecture about Hendricks’s art, his portraiture, and his epoch.

HYBRID Book Discussion: A Soul Beneath the Earth with Author Sandy Schipper Wolberg

Hybrid (in person and on zoom) Book discussion of Sandy Schipper Wolberg's book:A Soul Beneath the Earth.Call Roxanne Spodek with questions at 516-967-5777 and to confirm  the in person portion.

A Soul Beneath the Earth
Freda Perelmuter Schipper and Sandy Schipper Wolberg(From the Five Towns Community)

Having broken her arm in a labor camp accident, 19-year-old Freda Perelmuter makes a daring escape back to her hometown of Horodlo, Poland, where she is hidden by a Ukrainian farmer and his wife in a small pit they had dug beneath their barn. It was there that Freda would hide from the Nazis and their collaborators, unable to speak, stand or see the sky for twenty-one months.
A Soul Beneath the Earth is a gripping story of resilience and faith, poignantly describing the quick thinking and sheer determination of a young woman to survive the Holocaust against all odds. Written with her daughter, Sandy Schipper Wolberg, the book meticulously documents Freda's life and presents an inspiring account of the human spirit and the triumph of faith and hope over despair and evil.

ZOOM: Armchair Tour of Jewish Bulgaria with Dani Rotstein

Zoom Armchair tour of Jewish communities in Bulgaria with Dani Rotstein.

Although a relatively small community today — about 6,000-7,000 Jews, the majority of
whom live in the capital city of Sofia — Bulgaria’s Jewish history is quite old. In the country’s
second-largest city of Plovdiv, you can find the remains of a 2nd Century synagogue. One of
the most well-known moments in Bulgaria’s history was the Salvation of the Jews from theso-called “proper Bulgarian lands” during the Holocaust. It is a story with national importance, but also personal importance for our guide, Maxim. Director of Jewish education for the Organization of the Jews in Bulgaria “Shalom,” Maxim also serves as Chairman of the Jewish Religious Council, the official representative body of Jewish religionin the country. Join him to learn more about the small but well-organized Jewish community of Bulgaria that, 30 years after reestablishment from the Communism, is thriving with an active Jewish school, kindergarten and different opportunities for expressing Jewishness.

Registration not required. This program may exceed our zoom capacity. We advise logging in on time.

Zoom Navigating College Admissions Successfully

 Program Description: ZOOM

Navigating College Admissions Successfully in 2023

We are offering this Zoom presentation to help families understand how the lingering effects from the pandemic have changed the college admissions landscape and how it affects Juniors, Sophomores and Freshmen.

The recent college admissions cycle was the most competitive to date. With most colleges continuing their test-optional policies as well as increasing their virtual outreach to high school students, many schools had record numbers of applicants. Record high numbers of applications result in record low acceptance rates which is what most popular colleges and universities experienced this past admissions cycle.

We will discuss current college admissions trends, the importance of researching and visiting colleges to find schools that can be a good fit for your child, a timeline and other action steps that can be taken to make this second half of the school year productive and help reduce the stress around the college admissions process.

We’ll examine the holistic admissions review process, what admissions officers consider important when they review applicants, and how students can position themselves to develop a compelling narrative to increase their chances for admission.

We will also discuss the importance of community service, how it can provide an opportunity for personal growth and a way to showcase a student’s character. Admissions officers place great emphasis on a student’s character and how the student has been able to give back and help others. This program is recommended for parents and their high school teens.

The presentation will be led by Ron Feuchs and Jackie Tepper, partners at Stand Out For College, LLC. (www.standoutforcollege.com)

ZOOM: Audrey Hepburn presented by Martin Schneit

ZOOM PROGRAM
Audrey Hepburn was a major cultural icon in film, fashion and became a
special ambassador for UNICEF. Audrey was the most acclaimed young
ballerina in the Netherlands. Severe malnutrition from World War II stunted her growth
and made it impossible for her to pursue ballet. So Audrey turned to acting.
She became the lady women have emulated for over half a century.
She won an Oscar for best actress in the film Roman Holliday. Her portrayal of
Sister Luke in The Nun’s Story is one of the greatest performances of the screen.
From the 1950’s to the 1960’s she was the screen’s foremost embodiment of
grace. She captured the epitome of mid 1950’s elegance with seemingly carefree
ease. Marty will discuss the following films that Audrey Hepburn appeared in:
Roman Holliday, Funny Face, The Nun’s Story, My Fair Lady and Breakfast at Tiffanys.
