Online Book Discussion with Mira: The Splendid and the Vile

The Splendid and the Vile: A Saga of Churchill, Family, and Defiance During the Blitz by Erik Larson

Mira Rosenfeld Sennett will facilitate this Zoom discussion. In The Splendid and the Vile, Erik Larson shows how Churchill taught the British people “the art of being fearless.” It is a story of political brinksmanship but also an intimate domestic drama, set against the backdrop of Churchill’s prime-ministerial country house, Chequers, and his wartime residence, Ditchley, where Churchill and his entourage go when the moon is brightest and the bombing threat is highest. Drawing on a wealth of untapped sources, including recently declassified files, intelligence reports, and personal diaries only now available, Larson provides a new lens on London’s darkest year through the day-to-day experience of Churchill and his family.

Zoom Program: Gentle Yoga for Joints / November Series

Instructor Paulette Silber continues her series for Peninsula patrons in a new 7-session series. through September 30! She will focus on therapeutic stretches which do not involve holding postures or sitting on mats. Use of a chair is optional. Using the system “Joints and Glands Exercises” of the Himalayan Institute, this series will illustrate gentle stretches from head to toe, designed to relieve stiffness of the joints and rebalance circulation through the glands. If you have thought of taking yoga, yet hesitated due to lack of flexibility or compromised mobility, then this course may be for you, as well as for anyone wishing to benefit their joints. We will add Chinese self massage and acupressure to complement the benefit of the gentle stretches.

There are four November sessions: 11/4, 11/11, 11/18 & 11/25. Registration required. An email with the Zoom login details will be sent prior to the program.

Online Film and Discussion: TREZOROS/ The Lost Jews of Kastoria, Greece

Special Zoom Movie Event: TREZOROS Movie and discussion

Watch the Film / Meet the Filmmakers

In TREZOROS: THE LOST JEWS OF KASTORIA, using never-before-seen archival footage and first-person testimonies, executive producer and director Lawrence Russo and co-director and producer Larry Confino tell the story of the vibrant Jewish life and culture of Kastoria, a picturesque lakeside village in the mountains of Northwestern Greece, near the Albania border. Here, Jews and Greek Orthodox Christians lived together in harmony for more than two millennia until World War II.

For the filmmakers, the story is personal, as their families have direct ties to Greece.

TREZOROS, the Ladino/Judeo-Spanish term of endearment meaning “Treasures", takes us from the joyful innocence of the pre-war years through the heartbreaking struggles of the Holocaust, to a unique place in time and history of a Greek Jewish culture lost forever.

1PM: Filmmakers Larry Confino and Lawrence Russo will introduce the 90-minute Documentary Film TREZOROS.

1:15-2:45PM: Zoom Screening of TREZOROS

2:45-3:30PM: Remarks and Q&A with the Filmmakers

Registration required. An email with the Zoom login will be sent prior to the program.
