Cooking with Kerrie

Chef Kerrie Schoenbucher will be preparing some scrumptious items at the Library.  Kerrie has been with Atria Aquidneck Place since January of 2016.  Her smiling face is hard to find sometimes as she is hidden in the kitchen but, if you do catch a glimpse of her you will see right away that she is a positive light in our community!  Of course everyone raves about Kerrie’s fabulous meals and we will have the opportunity to taste some favorites and learn some cooking tips along the way.  Recipes include crab & cream cheese wontons, pan seared tuna with mixed greens and root vegetable hash, cranberry cookies.  Wine specially chosen for this class will accompany the samplings.

Kerrie was born and lives in Portsmouth, RI and is a graduate of Portsmouth High School.  After school, Kerrie went straight into the work force as a cook in Newport County.

This program is free and open to the public but you must be 21 or over to attend.  Seating is limited to 20.

Basic Embroidery

Make your very own embroidered piece of art taught by Karen Katin from Stitchery! In this class you will learn 4 basic hand sewing stitches from which most every design can be fashioned. Learn about readily available and specialty embroidery supplies, how to transfer images to fabric for stitching, and then what you can do with your sewn piece of art. Many examples of completed modern embroidery as well as inspirational books will be on display. All materials provided.

Karen Katin has been sewing her entire life—starting at age 5 and never stopping. She first worked as a research scientist, earned a Masters in Education from William and Mary, taught high school Biology, and after having children, spend 7 years on Etsy and the artisan fair circuit as Dancing Threads RI selling handmade bags and accessories. She opened Stitchery in Portsmouth, RI, in February 2017 as a studio space offering a wide range of needle arts classes. In addition to a full schedule of studio classes, she also teaches sewing workshops at libraries around the state.

All materials provided.

This free workshop is limited to 15 participants, ages 18 and up.

YA Fiction Book Club

Teens and adults are welcome to join us for our monthly book club! Always held the last Tuesday of each month.

This month's selection is My Life in Black and White by Natasha Friend.

Summary: What if you lost the thing that made you who you are?

Lexi has always been stunning. Her butter-colored hair and perfect features have helped her attract friends, a boyfriend, and the attention of a modeling scout. But everything changes the night Lexi's face goes through a windshield. Now she's not sure what's worse: the scars she'll have to live with forever, or what she saw going on between her best friend and her boyfriend right before the accident. With the help of her trombone-playing, defiantly uncool older sister and a guy at school recovering from his own recent trauma, Lexi learns she's much more than just a pretty face.

Portsmouth Historical Society Book Series

Portsmouth Free Public Library and the Portsmouth Historical Society will host a book club discussion of “American Jezebel: The Uncommon Life of Anne Hutchinson, the Women Who Defied the Puritans,” by Eve LaPlante.

Anne Hutchinson, a forty-six-year-old midwife pregnant with her sixteenth child, stood before forty male judges of the Massachusetts Court, charged with heresy and sedition. In a time when women could not vote, hold public office, or teach outside the home, the charismatic Hutchinson wielded remarkable political power. Her unconventional ideas had attracted a following of prominent citizens eager for social reform. Hutchinson defended herself brilliantly, but the judges, faced with a perceived threat to public order, banished her for behaving in a manner “not comely for [her] sex.” Exiled from Boston Colony, she settled in Rhode Island with many of her followers, who founded the town of Portsmouth in 1638, establishing a “Bodie Politick” based on religious freedom. The book illuminates the origins of our modern concepts of religious freedom, equal rights, and free speech, and showcases an extraordinary woman whose achievements are astonishing by the standards of any era.

This will be the first of a series of Portsmouth Free Public Library book club discussions on books about local history selected by the Portsmouth Historical Society. Copies of this title will be available for checkout at the library.  This event is free and no sign up is required.

There are 18 spaces available.

Edible Flowers with Mary Newman

We like to look at them, they make us truly smile, but why on earth would anyone want to eat them? Co-author of Edible Flowers: A Global History, Mary Newman, will share examples of flowers that have a long history as a tasty ingredient in a variety of cuisines, from ancient Greek dishes to today’s molecular gastronomy and farm-to-table restaurants. Looking at flowers’ natural qualities: their unique and beautiful appearance, their pungent fragrance, and their surprisingly good taste, Newman will tie this culinary history into a larger cultural one, showing how flowers’ cultural, symbolic, and religious connotations have added value and meaning to dishes in daily life and special occasions. Learn what flower products are available locally and what flowers are most easily grown even in the tiniest of gardens. See flowers not just as something beautiful, but also as something absolutely delicious, unexpected, and even cost-effective way to impress your own dinner guests.  A sampling of some edible flowers will be offered at the program so you can truly see flowers in a whole new way.

This program is free and open to the public but seating is limited.  Please sign up by clicking on the REGISTER button or call the library at 683-9457.
