 IS183 Art School of the Berkshires proudly presents -- I Colori Per La Pace: An exhibit of  drawings about "Peace" from over 500 Berkshire County K-5th grade artists.  This exhibition will be on display at The Berkshire Athenaeum from February 15 to March 3, 2018. Following the show, artwork will be sent to Italy to be displayed in the largest exhibition of child art in the world, organized by the association ‘I Colori Per La Pace'.

Join us for the 7th Annual Berkshire Gas Mini-Golf Classic! This fun family event sponsored by Berkshire Gas raises funds to support Literacy Volunteers in its mission to improve adult literacy in the greater Pittsfield area.

A 10-hole golf course (to complement Pittsfield’s 10×10 Upstreet Arts Festival’s theme), complete with hazards, will be set up inside the library. The mini-golf course is on all three floors of the library and takes about an hour to play.

The cost to play is $5.00 for adults and kids under 12 will play for free, thanks to a genereous donation from Centerline Construction.  Club and golf ball rental included. Free snacks will be provided!  Come join the fun!

Co-hosted by Literacy Volunteers of Berkshire County and the Athenaeum.

Cinema of Law: The Crucible

Cinema of Law returns for a new season.

 "The Crucible" (1996) will be introduced by Victoria Van Tol, Assistant District Attorney in Berkshire County. The film is a screen adaptation of  Arthur Miller's 1953 play which was inspired by the McCarthy hearings of the 1950s.   The Crucible focuses on the inconsistencies of the Salem witch trials and the extreme behavior that can result from dark desires and hidden agendas. Miller bases the play on the historical account of the Salem witch trials. The film stars Daniel Day-Lewis and Winona Ryder.

This program may be approved for Forum Credit for Berkshire Community College students.

Free and no registration required.

The Cinema of Law series presents law related films and commentary. It is  a collaboration among the Berkshire Law Library, the Berkshire Bar Association and the Friends of the Berkshire Athenaeum .

Overdose Management & Narcan training

Cathleen Vidoli from Healthy Steps will be offering overdose management and Narcan administration training.  Participants will learn what measures one should take when responding to opioid overdoses (including fentanyl and cardentanil concerns). The class will cover overdose prevention techniques, signs of an overdose, rescue breathing, and narcan administration. All attendees will receive an overdose response kit, including Narcan nasal spray, to take with them after the training. 

The class is free and open to the public. Class size is limited and registration is required.

Get Tested at the Library

The Berkshire Athenaeum is partnering with the Berkshire Medical Center's State Clinic to offer free, confidential health screenings on a walk-in basis. Clinic staff will perform testing for STD, HIV, and Hepatitis C at the library’s balcony level meeting room on the second Monday of each month.. All testing is confidential and notifications and follow-up services will be provided by clinic staff.

Gary Smith, Berkshire Law Librarian, will present a power point and lecture,“The Salem Witchcraft Trial of George Jacobs: Art and Legal History.”  George Jacobs, Sr. was about 72 years old when he was hanged as a wizard on August 19, 1962, along with three other men and one woman- the first time men were executed for witchcraft in Salem. He was accused, among many others, by his granddaughter Margaret Jacobs, who was also accused and imprisoned.

This program may be approved for Forum Credit for Berkshire Community College students.

Free and no registration required.

Cinema of Law: The Scarlet Letter

Cinema of Law continues at the Athenaeum. 

"The Scarlet Letter" (1926) will be introduced by Marilyn Manning, former teacher of English in the Pittsfield public schools.  Mike Schiffer will play the accompaniment for this silent film featuring Lillian Gish. The film is based on the book by Nathaniel Hawthorne and concerns a young Puritan woman who is pressured to reveal the name of her lover after having a child out of wedlock, 

This program may be approved for Forum Credit for Berkshire Community College students.
