Earth Day Technology Recycling Collection

In observance of Earth Day, the Berkshire Athenaeum, Pittsfield’s Public Library is hosting an Electronics Recycling Collection, Monday, April 22 – Tuesday, April 30. Partnering with Dell’s Reconnect residential recycling program, the library will accept monitors, scanners, mice, printers, keyboards, laptop batteries, ink/toner cartridges, computers, hard drives, speakers, cords, and cables. No television sets will be accepted.

Technical Services Supervisor Becky McDole remarks, “What a great way to observe Earth Day and the coming of spring: by clearing your home of outdated technology and disposing of these items responsibly. We had this collection last year; and it was so well received. We're pleased that in 2019 we can offer the collection for an even longer period.”

Recycled items will be accepted during regular library hours in designated bins. Those bringing computers and hard drives for recycling are advised to remove all personal data. Neither Dell nor the Berkshire Athenaeum is liable for data removal or protection. Those with questions about the Recycling Event can contact the library at info@pittsfieldlibrary.org or 413-499-9480.

Discover the Owls of New England

Wildlife photographer Peter Cristoph will present photographs of his favorite owls combined with stories that entertain, educate and inspire the audience. You’ll learn the secrets Peter uses to find and photograph these same owls in the wild in their natural habitat! Eight species of expected owls in New England include: Great Horned, Barred, and Eastern Screech – all year-round residents and fairly easy to spot. Long-eared, Short-eared, and Snowy are winter migrants and breed far north of us. Northern Saw-whet Owls do breed in New England but are quite small and rarely seen. Barn Owls have bred in New England but are the toughest of all to find. He’ll wrap up this exceptional wildlife program with beautiful images of a vagrant migrant- a rare visitor called the Great Gray Owl.

This program has been approved for Forum Credit for Berkshire Community College students.

Release Your Inner Artist Workshop

Join artist Janet Schwartz for a hands-on art workshop designed for aspiring artists who want to learn a technique that will help "jump-start" their creativity.  As a lifelong educator and practicing artist with a degree in Art Education,Janet Schwartz is passionate about this workshop and love helping others overcome their fears about starting a painting.  Using pastels, she  guides participants to simplify what they see and capture the essence of their subject by focusing on the  darks, lights and mid-tones.  Through a series of images that are more and more in-focus, each participant will create what initially looks like an abstraction but gradually evolves into something more familiar. Participants are delighted with the result!  Although geared toward individuals with minimal art background,  experienced artists have also enjoyed and benefited from this unique program. The concepts and strategies taught can be applied to oil, acrylics, pastel, watercolor and any art medium.

This program has been approved for Forum Credit for Berkshire Community College students.

Pre-registration for this workshop is required.  You may register for this class by clicking the Register button and entering your library card number or you may email the Reference Department at info@pittsfieldlibrary.org or call 413- 344-4980 x202 during regular business hours.  Your card must be current in order to register for classes.

Sponsored
in part by a Pittsfield Cultural Council Grant, which is supported by a Massachusetts Cultural Council Grant and the Friends of the Berkshire Athenaeum.
