In the Footsteps of Ruth Reichl: A NYC Food Odyssey
6:30 PM - 8:00 PM

Join Pat Sommerstad on an adventure that’s part of New York City’s culinary history! Ruth Reichl was the NY Times food critic from 1993-1999, famous for her “populist” reviews of restaurants that everyone could enjoy and afford.
Previous Times reviewers had focused on expensive high-end restaurants, but Ruth changed all that! Of the almost 400 restaurants that she reviewed, over 75 are still in business twenty years later. With foreknowledge of her (often very funny) reviews, we will walk in Ruth’s footsteps to “visit” seven of them. We’ll examine what has changed and tap their memories of Ruth’s visits. Then we’ll explore their neighborhoods, visiting both familiar and new attractions. Each day’s itinerary will end at a nearby rooftop bar for remarkable views! You will leave with seven all-day itineraries, seven Ruth Reichl restaurant reviews, and most likely, several prizes!

Garden Getaways: Why Stop At Summer?
6:30 PM - 8:00 PM

Visiting a spring garden brings the joy of seeing the first buds and blossoms emerging after a long winter. Visiting a summer garden provides a view of the rich vibrant panorama of summer flowers. But when visiting a garden on acrisp autumn day, a riot of rusts, reds and oranges unfolds spectacularly before you. Chrysanthemums, fall daisies, sedum, monkshood, asters and dahlias spread their color against the fiery autumn foliage of sugar maples, hickory, pin oak and dogwood. We’ll visit 10 gardens, 4 late summer and 6 at full autumn color. You‘ll take home comprehensive handouts about the 35 public gardens in the NYC area, including where to eat and what else to do in the vicinity of each garden we visit. Prizes are awarded. All garden lovers are invited!
