Social Welfare: Learn About Resources Available In New London
2:00 PM - 3:30 PM

This program will start in the Adult Reading Area.

Beloved Grace Carter from the New London Breakfast Program will be at the library to talk about resources available in New London through the Breakfast Program as well as provide samples of the menu. This informational and tasty event is open to the public, and will be held in the Adult Reading Area Wednesday, November 15 from 2:00 PM to 3:00 PM and move downstairs from 3:00 PM to 3:30 PM for sampling. The New London Breakfast Program, located at 66 Union Street in New London, CT is a daily breakfast serving program, along with a monthly lunch rotation, for the less fortunate. The Breakfast Program was the heartfelt conception of a group of people who felt a strong urge to “do something to help the helpless” and in 2005 the kitchen doors were opened.

Once owned by the First Congregational church and now owned and staffed by the Engaging Heaven Church which is pastured by James and Debbie Levesque who have lovingly kept the “breakfast club” open with the help of willing and eager volunteers from the church and community, as well as once-guests who were being served, now serving and helping give back to others and serve not only meals but an example of hope and encouragement.

The New London Breakfast Program accepts food and monetary donations to help offset the costs of purchased items not covered by donations. Small seasonal items such as hats, gloves, mittens, scarves, hooded sweatshirts and socks are precious commodities that are distributed to those in need who visit the breakfast.

A donation box will be available at the event for anyone wishing to bring in non-perishable food items and/or seasonal items such as new socks, scarves, gloves and hats.

The Public Library of New London extends the invitation to friends or family of anyone who is in need or anyone who would like to expand their knowledge base of community resources for future reference or give to a good cause.

Meet Author Paula Tarnapol Whitacre
11:30 AM - 12:30 PM
From the author:

"The book that I just published—called A Civil Life in an Uncivil Time: Julia Wilbur’s Struggle for Purpose—is about an abolitionist from upstate New York who came to Alexandria, VA (my current residence) during the Civil War.

The book has Connecticut connections, in the form of a surgeon named Edwin Bentley (New London/Norwich) and a minister named Albert Gladwin (Essex…actually one of the villains of the story). But as the title suggests, I also tried to write a book that uses history to challenge people about how they can make choices to lead a “civil life." "

Ayurveda Workshop
2:00 PM - 3:00 PM

"Ayurveda is a system of medicine with historical roots in the Indian subcontinent. Globalized and modernized practices derived from Ayurveda traditions are a type of complementary or alternative medicine" -Wikipedia

"Ayurveda literally means “knowledge of life” and its scope is truly no less encompassing. While the tradition is thought to be over five thousand years old, Ayurveda remains as relevant as ever—and it is enlivened every day as individuals around the world engage its timeless wisdom in their day-to-day lives.

Ayurveda is a remarkably individualized system of medicine. The tradition is rooted in the idea that each of us is born with a completely personal blueprint for optimum health. From birth onward, it is this reference point—your constitution—that, in many ways, defines who you are. No two constitutions are exactly alike; therefore, no two human beings can have precisely the same expression of ideal health.

In Ayurveda, everything is medicine and everything is poison; what might be beneficial to you could harm someone else, and visa versa. It all depends on the context of who you are, and what patterns are currently at play in your particular system. Ayurveda is fundamentally opposed to one-size-fits-all remedies. While there are certainly some practices that are considered to be beneficial for most everyone, Ayurveda places the focus firmly on you, the individual concerned. This is why your Ayurvedic Profile™—an assessment of your constitution, your current state of balance, and a set of personalized recommendations to support you in your journey towards optimal health—can be such an empowering resource." -Banyan Botanicals

An Afternoon with a Dog Listener: Understanding Your Best Friend
2:00 PM - 3:30 PM

Understanding Your Best Friend!

If you want to gain a much better understanding of your dog and its challenging behaviors, this session led by Phil Klein, Certified Dog Listener is for you.

LEARN:
…  How canines see the human world.
…  How canines communicate including the importance of eye contact and
      movement.
…  The underlying reasons for your dog’s behaviors like nervousness, toileting indoors, incessant barking, aggression, jumping on people, pestering for attention, destructive chewing, separation anxiety, pulling on the leash, etc.

THE BEST NEWS – learn the simple, dog-friendly changes in how to interact with your dog to transform its behavior in a kind and lasting way. In doing so, you will have a calmer, happier dog and a more enjoyable relationship with it.
Phil KleinI, Certified Dog Listener, began his path to becoming a Dog Listener when his family rescued a special dog named Abby from Labs4Rescue.  At the time, he had no idea about the journey he would be privileged to take with Abby.  Abby’s behavioral challenges were the motivation for Phil to learn a lot more about dogs and find a way to help Abby overcome her fears. In April 2009, Phil became a Certified Dog Listener through Jan Fennell’s Foundation and Advanced Canine Communications courses which presented a revolutionary method for training dogs based on their instincts. Through in-home consultations, volunteer work with Labs4Rescue and other rescue organizations, and public talks, Phil has been honored to help hundreds of dog owners and their dogs.

Bring your questions, but not your dog for an informative, fun session!

In the event that the library is closed due to inclement weather, the snow date will be February 4th

Creating Effective Development Calendars
10:00 AM - 12:00 PM

What kind of major donor cultivation strategies do you think work the best?

Do you ever find it challenging to have conversations with prospective donors and develop their interest in your cause? As fundraisers, we send out hundreds – maybe even thousands – of mail to our donors and constituents every year along with many, many other efforts to gain interest and support, but what if you aren't getting the results to match your efforts?

Learn how to cut through the clutter, avoid wasted time, energy and money and get better results with prospective donors by breaking down the best donor cultivation strategies, the importance of donor correspondence and it's best practices, campaign timelines, key dates and action deadlines that you need to know and how to maintain recognizable consistency.

This workshop will also touch on great know-hows for running your organization including incorporating new budgets, developing and employing strategic plans, and general internal and external communication plans that are effective.
