Minimizing Liability with Employee Handbooks
10:00 AM - 12:00 PM

Employment litigation can be very distracting and expensive - both in terms of the legal fees and the disruption caused to an employer's day-to-day business operations.  It is crucial for employers to establish effective human resources management strategies in order to avoid costly litigation, lengthy government investigations and other outside party intervention with their business operations.

Your nonprofit’s employee handbook is a vitally important tool that can either support your efforts, or undermine them if it's not done right.  Please join us for a discussion of best practices in creating and updating employee handbooks.

Topics Will Include

  • The importance of having written policies
  • Handbook drafting pitfalls and concerns
  • Hot button issues like the National Labor Relations Act and its implications for non-union employers
  • Relevant new developments in CT

Legal Basics for Connecticut Nonprofits
10:00 AM - 12:00 PM

Scrutiny of nonprofits has never been more intense than it is right now.  Nonprofit leaders – both senior staff and the members of the board – need to be familiar with the many state and federal rules that govern nonprofit, tax-exempt organizations to make sure their organization avoids any mis-steps.  Join us for this important two-hour workshop to learn about the fundamentals of nonprofit law and their application to your organization.  We’ll answer these questions and more:

  • What are the key state and federal rules that apply to our nonprofit tax-exempt organization?  What are the consequences for failure to comply?
  • What are the legal and fiduciary obligations of our board members?   How can the board assure ethical conduct?
  • What are the required annual filings and disclosures that we must make to agencies and to the general public?
  • Where are our greatest legal risks?   How do we avoid them (or plan for them)?

Presenter: Priya Morganstern is the Director of the Connecticut Program of Pro-Bono Partnership which oversees the Partnership’s services statewide (other than in Fairfield County). Priya provides direct legal services to local nonprofits; connects nonprofit organizations with volunteer attorneys; lectures frequently about nonprofit and tax-exempt organization law; and trains volunteer attorneys.
