When living at home becomes unmanageable, Veterans of all ages would prefer to remain in a home-like environment rather than transfer to a nursing home. The Medical Foster Home (MFH) Program is a National VA program, new to CT, that offers Veterans an innovative community-based housing option to support their long-term care needs. We are actively seeking loving caregivers willing to be paid to provide supervision and care for Veterans in their private homes. To learn more about the VA Medical Foster Program, please attend this informative event.

This month we're reading: Land of Stories: The Wishing Spell by Chris Colfer
Location: Children's Room

In this presentation, local history researcher Tom Schuch will cover 300 years of New London’s history, through the lens of a single street corner …. that no longer exists! The corner of Shapley and Huntington Streets, adjacent to the original Town Square, bears witness to a veritable tapestry of New London history: from the earliest settlement days, through the West Indies trade, slavery, Revolution, emancipation, Black mariners, the struggle of the Black community for abolition, education and civil rights, and continuing through Civil War, Reconstruction, Jim Crow, the Green Book, and urban renewal. The presentation will include newly discovered information, some of which will be revealed for the first time, about the Anderson and the Harris families, and their descendants, who lived on that corner for 94 years, and the significant role they played in the history of the Black community throughout the critical period 1840-1940, when New London was a microcosm of American history.
Bio:
Tom Schuch is a New London native and a graduate of Georgetown University in Washington, D.C., with a longstanding interest in social justice issues. He retired after 38 years as executive director of a local residential facility for troubled adolescent males. He has an avid interest in history, particularly John Brown, the Civil War, and, as a lifelong Sherlock Holmes fan, he has a special interest in unknown, forgotten, hidden or suppressed local history. This interest led to the discovery of several of the sites that are now part of the New London Black Heritage Walking Trail. He has given over 50 presentations and podcasts of his findings, including published articles in Connecticut Explored Magazine, and several local newspapers. Visit the website here!
"This little volume has been both written by and is dedicated to my late wife, Carol Ann Ruggiero For twenty years she lovingly attended and wrote for a writing group known as “Writers Unlimited.” These are her words, her thoughts, her humorous outlooks on life. This book is meant to be enjoyed by anyone of any age or social background. It is real and utterly without pretense. The author possessed no hidden agenda nor did she ever aspire to be anything but what she which was a genuine lady. Her life experiences endowed her with a healthy respect for humanity along with a large dose of common sense and humor. This book can be read cover to cover but it also can be read and savored in small doses over a long period of time. Each story centers on one brief moment. Each story is a tiny world of its own. Early on, Carol was taught to “show” not just tell. This lesson well learned, is the key to understanding and enjoying “Pearls from Carol” It is my firm hope that you the reader will both enjoy and pass on these pages for the enjoyment of many. This is a timeless gem. In our troubled, complex and anxiety ridden society this book will provide many a smile and no small amount of comfort."
–Albert J. Ruggiero
