Author Talk: John-Manuel Andriote
6:00 PM - 7:00 PM

To mark the 50th Anniversary of the Stonewall Riots (June 28-July 1, 1969), a series of spontaneous demonstrations against police in New York City that are largely considered to be the catalyst for the gay rights movement, John-Manuel Andriote and Rowman & Littlefield have released a new, paperback edition of Andriote’s acclaimed book Stonewall Stron: Gay Men’s Heroic Fight for Resilience, Good Health, and a Strong Community. The Public Library of New London is thrilled to host John-Manuel Andriote for an exclusive Author Talk, and to recognize the 50th anniversary of the historic Stonewall riots.

The Author Talk will begin at 6:00pm, and include time for Q&A with the author and an opportunity to purchase books and have them signed. Light snacks and refreshments will be served.

About the author: John-Manuel Andriote was born in New London, and graduated from Norwich Free Academy. While working on his Masters degree from Northwestern University, Andriote began writing and reporting on HIV/AIDS, publishing articles in the Washington Post and other newspapers and magazines. In 1999 he published Victory Deferred: How AIDS Changed Gay Life in America, which examines the impact of AIDS on individuals and on the gay civil rights movement. Kirkus Reviews called the book “The most important AIDS chronicle since Randy Shilts’ And the Band Played On.” Stonewall Strong is considered by Andriote “the bookend” of Victory Deferred, celebrating the resilience and strength of the LGBT community.

Chasing the Moon Film Screening & Panel Discussion - at WATERFORD PUBLIC LIBRARY
6:00 PM - 8:00 PM

In 1969, Neil Armstrong took one small step that defined a generation. Almost 50 years later, PBS American Experience is reliving this monumental achievement with a 3-part documentary series that premiers on July 8th: Chasing the Moon.

The Public Library of New London and the Waterford Public Library are excited to present an exclusive, 50-minute clip from the documentary, focusing on the successful Apollo 8 launch that "saved 1968", and Poppy Northcutt, who made history as the first female engineer to work in NASA's mission control. Following the screening, listen to our panel of experts discuss the film, the work that is being done to preserve artifacts left on the moon, the roles of women and underrepresented groups in the space race (and in scientific fields today), and more. The panel will also accept questions from the audience.
