Big Read Gallery Reception

Traveling Exhibit:  Appalachia through the Lens of Cecil Sharp

From 1916 - 1918, British musicologist Cecil Sharp and his assistant Maud Karpeles spent forty-six weeks traveling through the mountain regions of five Appalachian states in search of what Sharp believed to be traditional English folk ballads. In Appalachia, Sharp collected 500 songs from 281 individuals. He visited with singers and musicians many times, often stayed at their homes, and developed an appreciation and fondness for the mountain life. He captured these visits with his camera, creating a stunning visual record of the people and the times.

Great Decisions: Decoding U.S.-China Trade

Though arguably the most advanced economy in the world, the United States still uses centuries-old numbers to measure trade.  These antique numbers mangle understanding of the U.S.-China trade relationship, shrinking America’s true economic size and competitiveness, while swelling China’s.  Bad numbers give rise to bad policies that ultimately kill U.S. jobs and cede market share to China.  What other tools can the United States employ to counter China’s unfair trade practices? There are several available, yet they remain mostly unused.  Facilitator Jean-Claude Fouere.
