Lincoln Center Local (Recorded Event)
7:00 PM - 9:00 PM

Show Boat:  Based on a bestselling novel by Edna Ferber, Show Boat tells the 40-year story of the lives of performers, stagehands, and dock workers who are the denizens of the Cotton Blossom, a Mississippi River show boat. The New Yorker noted that the show “was a radical departure in musical storytelling, marrying spectacle with seriousness,” moving beyond the light and airy plots of previous operettas and musical comedies with its serious subjects of racial prejudice and tragic love. Highlights include “Ol’ Man River,” “Make Believe,” and “Can’t Help Lovin’ Dat Man.” Broadway’s most revived and revised work, Show Boat was the first musical ever performed by an opera company — by New York City Opera in 1954. Recent productions have garnered the Tony Award for Best Revival of a Musical (1995) and the Laurence Olivier Award for Best Musical Revival (1991).

This program contains language or scenes that some may find objectionable. Viewer discretion is advised.  (Recorded November 5, 2014)

Decoding the Past: Treasures from the Dutchess County Historical Society
1:00 PM - 2:00 PM

RE-SCHEDULED FROM MARCH 14, 2017

Decoding the Past returns for another season in 2017, kicking off with this exciting program on Civil War surgery.

Join our expert presenters, Lou Lewis, Harrison Hunt and Sam Simon, MD, as they unravel the history behind the instruments contained in this surgeon's case, donated to the Dutchess County Historical Society by Vassar Hospital. Learn how Civil War medical methods compare to modern practices: was battlefield medicine as grim as it seems from our perspective?  This event is free and open to the public: donations to DCHS will be accepted and will be used to support similar future programming.

Please contact DCHS to register: (845) 471-1630 or dchistorical@verizon.net.

Great Decisions: Trade and Politics
7:00 PM - 8:30 PM

The U.S. political mood toward trade has gone sour. One need look no further than the 2016 presidential contest for the popular narrative: trade means that China wins, at America’s expense. But do the numbers support that conclusion? The metrics used to gauge economic strength—Gross Domestic Product and balance of trade—have not kept up with the realities of modern manufacturing. Obtaining an accurate picture of U.S. economic stature requires a critique of those numbers. Only then can the U.S. develop appropriate policy solutions for the challenges at hand.   Facilitated by Jean-Claude Fouere, Physics Engineering INSA Lyon, Lyons, France; Optical Engineering U. of Rochester, Rochester NY USA.

7:00 PM - 8:30 PM

Donna Seaman brings to life seven forgotten woman artists: Louise Nevelson, Gertrude Abercrombie, Lois Mailou Jones, Ree Morton, Joan Brown, Christina Ramberg, and Lenore Tawney. These women fought to be treated the same as males artists, to be judged by their work, not their gender or appearance. Seaman reveals what drove them, how they worked, and how they were perceived by others in a world where women were subjects -- not makers -- of art.
