Great Decisions: U.S. Foreign Policy and Petroleum
7:00 PM - 8:30 PM

What is the effect of U.S. petroleum security on foreign policy?  What is the effect of U.S. petroleum security on foreign policy? For 45 years, the country has alternated between periods of energy security and insecurity, sometimes able to wield petroleum as a useful instrument of foreign policy, sometimes not. Despite the so-called “energy revolution,” the U.S. today is by no means disentangled from foreign dependence and global trends. In order to be successful, policymakers must recognize both petroleum security circumstances and patterns in the relationship between petroleum and foreign policy. Facilitated by Matt Murray, Instructor in Government at Dutchess Community College.

Book: Norse Mythology by Neil Gaiman.  Neil Gaiman has long been inspired by ancient mythology in creating the fantastical realms of his fiction. Now he presents his fashioning of the primeval Norse myths into a novel. Gaiman stays true to the myths while vividly recreating the characters--the gods with their fiercely competitive natures, their susceptibility to being duped and to dupe others, and their tendencey to let passion ignite their actions--and making these long-ago myths breathe pungent life again. (adapted from author website)

An Afternoon with Jeff Shaara
2:30 PM - 4:00 PM

Noted historical fiction author Jeff Shaara talks about history, fiction, and war.  His newest book, The Frozen Hours, tells how in June, 1950, the North Korean army invades South Korea, with the intent of uniting the country under Communist rule. In response, the United States mobilizes a force to defend the overmatched South Korean troops. The American and United Nations troops are fighting for their lives against the most brutal weather conditions imaginable, and an enemy that outnumbers them more than six to one. This struggle, and how the Americans respond, form the core of this novel. The Frozen Hours tells the story of "Frozen Chosin" from multiple points of view.

Victor DeMasi lepidopterist will take you on a sunny day walk through his butterfly meadow in Redding, Connecticut.
