Humans of the Big Read (Photography Workshop)

This inter-generational Big Read event is inspired by the Humans of New York photography project of several years ago. Parents and their teens work with an arts educator from The Art Effect to capture portraits of each other as they re-imagine passages from the Big Read literature.  Registration required through The Art Effect at 845-471-7477.

Keynote Address: Historical Perspectives on the Chinese American Experience

Historian and author K. Scott Wong examines the historical, political, and artistic landscape of the experience of Chinese in America from the earliest immigrants to today. Dr. Wong teaches at Williams College in MA, and was a contributing scholar for the PBS Documentary on the Chinese Exclusion Act. Q and A will follow. This Big Read kick-off event will also feature a Chinese calligraphy exhibit and cultural presentation from the students of the Mid-Hudson Chinese Language Center.

This is a three-week workshop series inspired by the Big Read companion novel American Born Chinese (10/19, 10/26, 11/2). Teens work with an arts educator from The Art Effect to learn how to build pages for a graphic novel.
