Youth Summer Food Service Program

School may be out, but the cafeteria at Poughkeepsie High School is filled with busy chefs slicing, dicing, and preparing fresh food in order to ensure City of Poughkeepsie children who depend on free and reduced-priced lunches during the school year do not go hungry during the summer.

The Summer Food Services Program is federally funded and provides a no cost breakfast and lunch to children who are residents of the City of Poughkeepsie and who are 18 years old or younger.  The program was created to make nutritious meals available to students who during the summer do not have access to school meals. There are no forms, residency or citizenship rules. A typical meal may include a sandwich, fresh fruit, salad, juice, and milk. The Poughkeepsie City School District is a federally approved provider for this program.

This year the Poughkeepsie Public Library District is partnering with the school to provide an additional location where free meals will be served.

Great Decisions: The Philippines & the US

The Philippines has had a special relationship with the United States since the islands were ceded by Spain to the United States after the Spanish-American War at the end of the 19th century.  However, since the election of Rodrigo Duterte, the country has pivoted more toward China, and away from the U.S. Duterte has also launched a large-scale war on drugs that many criticize for its brutality. What does the future hold for U.S, relations with the Philippines?  Facilitator Debora Shon, Poughkeepsie Public Library District.

Join us as we discuss The Rise of Wolf 8 by Rick McIntyre. This program may be online or at a location TBD.

"Yellowstone National Park was once home to an abundance of wild wolves— but park rangers killed the last of their kind in the 1920s. Decades later, the rangers brought them back, with the first wolves arriving from Canada in 1995. This is the incredible true story of one of those wolves. Wolf 8 struggles at first— he is smaller than the other pups, and often bullied— but soon he bonds with an alpha female whose mate was shot. An unusually young alpha male, barely a teenager in human years, Wolf 8 rises to the occasion, hunting skillfully, and even defending his family from the wolf who killed his father. But soon he faces a new opponent: his adopted son, who mates with a violent alpha female. Can Wolf 8 protect his valley without harming his protégé? Authored by a renowned wolf researcher and gifted storyteller, The Rise of Wolf 8 marks the beginning of an original and bold new trilogy, which will transform our view of wolves forever."

If interested in joining, please email Kira Thompson at kthompson@poklib.org to be added to the meeting invitation list or register below to receive updates.

We hope to be able to hang out ‘in person’ with appropriate masking and physical distancing…but just in case we can’t meet together physically, we’ll be running these same programs online!
