Dr. Richard M. Shiff Forum Presents: Virtual Lecture: Sacco-Vanzetti
7:00 PM - 8:00 PM

The Plymouth Public Library’s Dr. Richard M. Shiff Forum presents: Sacco-Vanzetti: Case Revisited, on Wednesday, October 28th, at 7:00 pm. This virtual presentation is led by local historian, Christopher Daly.  “Sacco-Vanzetti Case Revisited” presentation contains period photographs of all the major players in the case, the locations of the robberies, the courthouse, the massive demonstrations, Charlestown State Prison and the funeral procession down Hanover Street in Boston. Many of these photographs are rare and are not published anywhere. There are also many photographs of locations as they appear today.

Daly has written several articles on varied historical topics for local publications and has written his first book entitled "Murder and Mayhem in Boston: Historic Crimes in the Hub."  Daly has also served as historical consultant on the Sacco-Vanzetti Case for the Travel Channel's program "Timetraveling with Brian Unger."  He also appeared in two episodes of the Travel Channel's "Kindred Spirits" in the capacity of historian on shows about the Lizzie Borden Case.  The library is proud to host this program as part of our three-part Literary Salon Series.

Registration is required for this free program which will take place on Zoom.  Please register on the library’s Eventkeeper calendar.  For more information call Tom Cummiskey, Outreach/Senior Services Librarian, at 508-830-4250 or TTY 508-747-5882 or email tcummiskey@ocln.org (An email will be sent a few days prior to the event with Zoom details.)

Pilgrims' Progress: Music of the Plimoth Colony Settlers 1590-1645
7:00 PM - 8:15 PM

With footage and musical clips from Seven Times Salt members, we present this hour-long virtual program.  It follows the settlers from their homes in England’s cities and countryside, to religious refuge in the Netherlands, and onward to their challenging though fulfilling life in Plimoth Colony.

We’ll celebrate Plymouth's 400th anniversary with music of the Elizabethan tavern and theater; spirited catches by Thomas Ravenscroft; selections from the Dutch ‘t Uitnement Kabinet, stirring psalms from Sternhold & Hopkins’ Whole Booke of Psalmes, and vigorous tunes from Playford's The English Dancing Master. You'll also hear fictitious "diary entries" of the colonists read aloud in Original Pronunciation, the English of Shakespeare, Queen Elizabeth I-- and the Pilgrims!  (Registrants will be emailed the link or Zoom details prior to the program.)

Seven Times Salt will hopefully return to the library in a live concert in the Fall, 2021.

Going to Extremes
6:00 PM - 8:00 PM

An award-winning adventure travel journalist for The Boston Globe, The Washington Post, National Geographic, and The Providence Journal, Peter Mandel hunts his stories and photos in the world's far corners, including Antarctica, India, Egypt, Patagonia, the fjords of Norway, the mountain pathways of Japan, and the deserts of Africa.

The author of ten books, he'll show slides of his most extreme travel experiences—surviving a coup in Ecuador, visiting a ‘city’ of penguins at the South Pole, fishing for piranha on Brazil’s Rio Negro, floating in the Goodyear Blimp, sailing on an Arctic icebreaker, camping in the African bush, and kayaking to the Statue of Liberty—and talk about how adventure travel turns to prose in today's media.

Mandel's books have been published by Simon & Schuster, Macmillan, HarperCollins and Henry Holt. One of his Boston Globe articles won the 2005 Lowell Thomas gold medal from the Society of American Travel Writers for adventure travel article of the year. Celebrating the Women's Vote Centennial--Meet Susan B. Anthony
2:00 PM - 3:30 PM

Join us to celebrate the centennial anniversary of the 19th amendment which granted women the right to vote! The program is set in 1898 when Anthony was a popular speaker on the national circuit. A spokesperson for temperance, abolition, and women’s suffrage, she was arrested for voting illegally in the 1872 reelection of Ulysses S. Grant. Although she did not live to see the day, the struggle for women’s rights initiated by Elizabeth Cady Staton and Lucretia Mott at the first Women’s Rights Convention at Seneca Falls (NY) in 1848, and carried on by Stanton, Mott, Susan B. Anthony, Lucy Stone, with hundreds of thousands of others eventually legalizing the vote for American women on August 26, 1920. The Plymouth Area League of Women Voters will offer tea and refreshments after the talk.   Co-sponsored with Cape Cod Bank.
