PPL Book Club -The Silent Wife
7:00 PM - 8:00 PM

This December, we will be reading "The Silent Wife" by A.S.A. Harrison. Reminiscent of Gone Girl and Girl on the Train, this thriller is rumored to soon become a motion picture starring Nicole Kidman.

Jodi and Todd are at a bad place in their marriage. Much is at stake, including the affluent life they lead in their beautiful waterfront condo in Chicago, as she, the killer, and he, the victim, rush haplessly toward the main event. He is a committed cheater. She lives and breathes denial. He exists in dual worlds. She likes to settle scores. He decides to play for keeps. She has nothing left to lose. Told in alternating voices, "The Silent Wife" is about a marriage in the throes of dissolution, a couple headed for catastrophe, concessions that can’t be made, and promises that won’t be kept. Expertly plotted and reminiscent of "Gone Girl" and "These Things Hidden," "The Silent Wife" ensnares the reader from page one and does not let go.

Meravelha will present, Midwinter Light,  an evening in celebration of the winter solstice, featuring music, readings and imagery from the Medieval era. Our program includes pieces from the Cantigas de Santa Maria, Dufay and Hildegard Von Bingen, as well as settings of Middle English texts by local favorite John Fleagle, the evening will surely leave you in a spirit to settle in and enjoy the long dark nights as we approach midwinter.  With harp, percussion, vielle and voice, the eight member Meravelha ensemble will provide an educational, theatrical and festive holiday concert for Seniors and friends.  Using music, poetry, and movement, the ensemble tells stories that reflect themes illustrated within the songs and cultures of the 11th-15th centuries.  The name “Meravelha,” which translates as “marvel” or “wonder” was taken from the song “Non es meravelha s’eu chan” (It is no wonder that I sing) by Bernard de Ventadorn, a 12th-century troubadour.

Tuesday Night Movie - Crazy Rich Asians (PG-13)
6:00 PM - 8:30 PM

Join us the first Tuesday of every month for an entertaining film.  This month, come enjoy the newly released comedy hit, "Crazy Rich Asians".

2 hours

Description: Based on the best-selling novels by Kevin Kwan, "Crazy Rich Asians" follows native New Yorker Rachel Chu as she accompanies her longtime boyfriend, Nick Young, to his best friend's wedding in Singapore. Excited about visiting Asia for the first time but nervous about meeting Nick's family, Rachel is unprepared to learn that Nick has neglected to mention a few key details about his life. It turns out that he is not only the scion of one of the country's wealthiest families but also one of its most sought-after bachelors. Being on Nick's arm puts a target on Rachel's back, with jealous socialites and, worse, Nick's own disapproving mother  taking aim. And it soon becomes clear that while money can't buy love, it can definitely complicate things.  Starring Constance Wu, Henry Golding, and Michelle Yeoh.

Come enjoy the movie with free popcorn!

PPL Book Club - Crazy Rich Asians
7:00 PM - 8:00 PM

Join us for a discussion of Kevin Kwan's "Crasy Rich Asians."

When New Yorker Rachel Chu agrees to spend the summer in Singapore with her boyfriend, Nicholas Young, she envisions a humble family home and quality time with the man she hopes to marry. But Nick has failed to give his girlfriend a few key details. One, that his childhood home looks like a palace; two, that he grew up riding in more private planes than cars; and three, that he just happens to be the country’s most eligible bachelor.

On Nick’s arm, Rachel may as well have a target on her back the second she steps off the plane, and soon, her relaxed vacation turns into an obstacle course of old money, new money, nosy relatives, and scheming social climbers.

75th Anniversary Classic Film Series: Gaslight
2:30 PM - 4:30 PM

The year is 1944.  The United States is entering it's third year in World War II, tensions are high at home, but the movies provide a break from the everyday emotions of the day.  We will feature films that are celebrating their 75th Anniversary.   Our first film is GASLIGHT, an American mystery-thriller.

After the death of her famous opera-singing aunt, Paula (Ingrid Bergman) is sent to study in Italy to become a great opera singer as well. While there, she falls in love with the charming Gregory Anton (Charles Boyer). The two return to London, and Paula begins to notice strange goings-on: missing pictures, strange footsteps in the night and gaslights that dim without being touched. As she fights to retain her sanity, her new husband's intentions come into question.  Also stars Angela Lansbury in her cinematic debut.

Refreshments provided by Plymouth Senior Living by Sunrise.

PPL Book Club Crazy Rich Asians
2:30 PM - 3:30 PM

Join us for a discussion on Kevin Kwan's "Crazy Rich Asians."

On Nick’s arm, Rachel may as well have a target on her back the second she steps off the plane, and soon, her relaxed vacation turns into an obstacle course of old money, new money, nosy relatives, and scheming social climb
ers.

75th Anniversary Classic Film Series: Going My Way
2:30 PM - 4:30 PM

The year is 1944.  The United States is entering it's third year in World War II, tensions are high at home, but the movies provide a break from the everyday emotions of the day.  We will feature films that are celebrating their 75th Anniversary.  Our second film is the American musical comedy-drama film, Going My Way.

Directed by Leo McCarey and starring Bing Crosby and Barry Fitzgerald, the film is based on a story by Leo McCarey and is about a new young priest taking over a parish from an established old veteran. Crosby sings five songs in the film, with other songs performed onscreen by Metropolitan Opera's star mezzo-soprano, Risë Stevens (in the role of a famous Metropolitan Opera performer) as well as the Robert Mitchell Boys Choir (in the role of juvenile deliquents turned into a choir.)

75th Anniversary Classic Film Series: To Have and Have Not
2:30 PM - 4:30 PM

The year is 1944.  The United States is entering it's third year in World War II, tensions are high at home, but the movies provide a break from the everyday emotions of the day.  We will feature films that are celebrating their 75th Anniversary.   Our third film is, To Have and Have Not.

An American romance-war-adventure film directed by Howard Hawks, loosely based on Ernest Hemingway's 1937 novel of the same name; however, the story was altered for the film. It stars Humphrey Bogart, Walter Brennan and Lauren Bacall in her film debut; it also features Dolores Moran, Hoagy Carmichael, Sheldon Leonard, Dan Seymour, and Marcel Dalio. The plot centers on the romance between a freelancing fisherman in Martinique and a beautiful American drifter which is complicated by the growing French resistance in Vichy France.

Tuesday Night Movie - Marshall (PG-13)
6:00 PM - 8:30 PM

Join us the first Tuesday of every month for an entertaining film.  In observance of Black History month, this month's film is "Marshall", a dramatization of a trial from early in the career of Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall.

1 hour, 58 minutes

Description:  "Marshall" follows the young NAACP lawyer Thurgood Marshall (Chadwick Boseman) to conservative Connecticut to defend a black chauffeur (Sterling K. Brown) charged with sexual assault and attempted murder of his white socialite employer (Kate Hudson). Muzzled by a segregationist court, Marshall partners with a courageous young Jewish lawyer, Samuel Friedman (Josh Gad). Together they mount the defense in an environment of racism and Anti-Semitism. The high profile case and the partnership with Friedman served as a template for Marshall's creation of the NAACP legal defense fund. What better way to celebrate Black History Month than by viewing this incredible story? Based on "Young Thurgood: The Making of a Supreme Court Justice", researched and written by Larry S. Gibson.

Enjoy the film with free popcorn!

PPL Book Club At Manomet An American Marriage
2:30 PM - 3:30 PM

Join us to discuss Tayari Jones's "An American Marriage."

Newlyweds Celestial and Roy are the embodiment of both the American Dream and the New South. He is a young executive, and she is an artist on the brink of an exciting career. But as they settle into the routine of their life together, they are ripped apart by circumstances neither could have imagined. Roy is arrested and sentenced to twelve years for a crime Celestial knows he didn’t commit. Though fiercely independent, Celestial finds herself bereft and unmoored, taking comfort in Andre, her childhood friend, and best man at their wedding. As Roy’s time in prison passes, she is unable to hold on to the love that has been her center. After five years, Roy’s conviction is suddenly overturned, and he returns to Atlanta ready to resume their life together.

This stirring love story is a profoundly insightful look into the hearts and minds of three people who are at once bound and separated by forces beyond their control. An American Marriage is a masterpiece of storytelling, an intimate look deep into the souls of people who must reckon with the past while moving forward—with hope and pain—into the future.

75th Anniversary Classic Film Series: National Velvet
2:30 PM - 4:30 PM

The year is 1944.  The United States is entering it's third year in World War II, tensions are high at home, but the movies provide a break from the everyday emotions of the day.  We will feature films that are celebrating their 75th Anniversary.  Our fourth film is National Velvet--a film for the whole family to enjoy!

An American technicolor sports film directed by Clarence Brown and based on the novel of the same name by Enid Bagnold, published in 1935. It stars Mickey Rooney, Donald Crisp, Angela Lansbury and a young Elizabeth Taylor.  In 2003, National Velvet was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress as being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant."

When Velvet Brown (Elizabeth Taylor), an equine-loving 12-year-old living in rural Sussex, becomes the owner of a rambunctious horse, she decides to train it for England's Grand National race. Aided by former jockey Mi Taylor (Mickey Rooney) and encouraged by her family, the determined Velvet gets her steed, affectionately called "The Pie," ready for the big day. However, a last-minute problem arises with the jockey and an unexpected rider must step in as a replacement.

Tuesday Night Movie - The Quiet Man (G)
6:00 PM - 8:30 PM

Join us the first Tuesday of every month for an entertaining film. With St. Patrick’s Day on the horizon, this month's move is John Ford’s classic masterpiece "The Quiet Man"

2 hours, 9 minutes

Description:  Sean Thornton (John Wayne) has returned to Ireland from America to reclaim his homestead and escape his past. Sean's eye is caught by beautiful but poor Mary Kate Danaher (Maureen O’Hara), the younger sister of ill-tempered "Red" Will Danaher (Victor McLaglen). The riotous relationship that forms between Sean and Mary Kate, punctuated by Will's pugnacious attempts to keep them apart, form the main plot, with Sean's past as the dark undercurrent.  Filmed on location in Ireland, the movie was nominated for 7 Academy Awards and won  Oscars for best cinematography and director.  Based on a story written by Kerry author Maurice Walsh (1879-1964) in his collection "Green Rushes."  In the United States, “The Quiet Man” was initially published in the Saturday Evening Post on February 11, 1933. This was where the American film director John Ford first read it – and the rest, as they say, is cinema history. He secured the film rights shortly after reading it, but it was 1952 before his famous film was released.

Enjoy the movie with free popcorn!

PPL Book Club The Wonder
2:30 PM - 3:30 PM

Join us to discuss Emma Donoghue's "The Wonder."

In the latest masterpiece by Emma Donoghue, bestselling author of Room, an English nurse brought to a small Irish village to observe what appears to be a miracle-a girl said to have survived without food for months-soon finds herself fighting to save the child's life.

Tourists flock to the cabin of eleven-year-old Anna O'Donnell, who believes herself to be living off manna from heaven, and a journalist is sent to cover the sensation. Lib Wright, a veteran of Florence Nightingale's Crimean campaign, is hired to keep watch over the girl.

Written with all the propulsive tension that made Room a huge bestseller, THE WONDER works beautifully on many levels--a tale of two strangers who transform each other's lives, a powerful psychological thriller, and a story of love pitted against evil.

75th Anniversary Classic Film Series: The Miracle of Morgan's Creek
2:30 PM - 4:30 PM

The year is 1944.  The United States is entering it's third year in World War II, tensions are high at home, but the movies provide a break from the everyday emotions of the day.  We will feature films that are celebrating their 75th Anniversary.  Our final film in the series is the hilarious romp by Preston Sturges, The Miracle of Morgan's Creek.

A classic screwball comedy film written and directed by Preston Sturges, starring Eddie Bracken and Betty Hutton, and featuring Diana Lynn, William Demarest and Porter Hall. Brian Donlevy and Akim Tamiroff reprise their roles from Sturges' 1940 film The Great McGinty.  In this wacky comedy, the soldier-smitten Trudy Kockenlocker (Betty Hutton) discovers that she is both married and pregnant after a raucous troop send-off party. While she has no idea who her new husband is, her longtime admirer, Norval Jones (Eddie Bracken), seizes the opportunity to help. When Trudy's cop father (William Demarest) catches wind of the situation, however, wacky misunderstandings follow, with the well-meaning Norval on the wrong side of the law.

The Miracle of Morgan's Creek, which was filmed in 1942 and early 1943, but not released until 1944, was nominated for a 1945 Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay, and, in 2001, it was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress as being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant". The film ranks #54 on the American Film Institute's 100 Years... 100 Laughs list of the top 100 funniest films in movie history.

Tuesday Night Movie - The Finest Hours (PG-13)
6:00 PM - 8:30 PM

Join us the first Tuesday of every month for an entertaining film. This month we will show "The Finest Hours" based on Casey Sherman and Michael J. Tougias' book detailing a daring Coast Guard rescue off the New England seaboard.

1 hour, 57 minutes

Description:  Starring Chris Pine and Casey Affleck, "The Finest Hours" is set in February of 1952, when one of the worst storms to ever hit the East Coast struck New England, damaging an oil tanker off the coast of Wellfleet, literally ripping it in half. On a small lifeboat faced with frigid temperatures and 70-foot high waves, four members of the Coast Guard set out to rescue more than 30 stranded sailors trapped aboard the rapidly-sinking vessel.  Praised for its special effects and gripping storm sequences as well as attention to period detail.

Building Bridges: Vintage Music of Latin America
2:00 PM - 3:30 PM

Acclaimed pianist, Jacqueline Schwab brings her new program to the library: Building Bridges—Vintage Music of Latin America

Jacqueline celebrates the sensual spirit, expressive melodies and pulsing dance rhythms of vintage habaneras, tangos, and waltzes, from Cuba, Brazil, Argentina, Venezuela and Mexico. These styles were the forerunners of samba, salsa, and other Latin music of today. Familiar and less well known melodies by composers Ernesto Nazareth, Ernesto Lecuona (made famous by I Love Lucy’s Desi Arnaz), Ignacio Cervantes, Juan Jose Castro and more, in classical and folk arrangements.

Pianist Jacqueline Schwab spins heartfelt musical stories, connecting listeners to the rich, multicultural strands of America’s musical tapestry. Her signature style—described by the New England Folk Almanac as “the jazz/classical improvisational spirit of Keith Jarrett and the touch of George Winston”—is hard to categorize but easy to recognize. In turns flowing or percussive, nuanced or primal, spare or embellished, reflective or passionate, elegiac or joyous, Jacqueline’s soulful playing speaks directly to the spirit. Her entwined classical and folk sensibilities arose from her childhood in Pittsburgh’s “melting pot” and further developed in Boston’s vibrant music scene. Her work with documentary film maker Ken Burns reacquainted her with Pittsburgh’s musical hero Stephen Foster and led to her folksy-yet-formal concerts of a diverse array of vintage American music.

In Ken Burns’ words: “Jacqueline Schwab brings more feeling and intensity to music than anyone I know. Her playing is insistent, physical, heartfelt and ... unusually moving.” Her distinctive playing infuses the sound tracks of Burns’ Grammy-winning Civil War, Baseball, Lewis and Clark, Mark Twain, The War, and The National Parks, among others. Critic Scott Alarik wrote she has “… an uncanny sensitivity to the moods and proprieties from other eras.” One listener wrote: “Your music, the touch you have, entwines the heart.”

She has also performed on The Irish in America, Ric Burns’ New York: A Documentary Film and others and has been composer for documentaries on the painter Mary Cassatt and on Mennonites. She has performed at the White House for President Clinton, and, with Scottish singer Jean Redpath, on public radio’s A Prairie Home Companion and on CBS’ Late Show with David Letterman. Jacqueline graduated from the New England Conservatory in Boston, majoring in piano improvisation in the Third Stream Department (renamed to Contemporary Improvisation). She has long played for English country dancing with the Bare Necessities quartet, whose flowing, group improvisational style and nationwide performances have inspired new generations of dancers and musicians. She has released four solo recordings and has played on over 50 other studio recordings, including with Scottish singer Jean Redpath, Scottish fiddlers Alasdair Fraser and Laura Risk, and Irish singer Aoife Clancy. She has performed concerts of vintage American music in almost every state of the Union.  She lives on Cape Cod, in Massachusetts.

Tuesday Night Movie -A Bridge of Spies (PG-13)
6:00 PM - 8:30 PM

Join us for the first Tuesday of every month for an entertaining film.   This month we will show "Bridge of Spies", based on the book "Bridge of Spies: A true story of the Cold War" by Giles Whittell.

2 hours, 22 minutes

Description:  Stephen Spielberg's highly regarded drama relates the story of how, in the cold war, a lawyer, James B. Donovan (Tom Hanks) is recruited by the CIA and involved in an intense negotiation mission to release and exchange a CIA U-2 spy-plane pilot, Francis G. Powers. The pilot was arrested alive after his plane was shot down by the Soviet Union during a mission.  Donovan had represented Rudolf Abel, a KGB officer arrested and tried for espionage in the United States, a role played by Mark Rylance who won the Oscar for Best Male Supporting Actor for his performance.

Tuesday Night Movie - The Walk (PG)
6:00 PM - 8:30 PM

Join us for the first Tuesday of every month for an entertaining film.   This month we will show "The Walk", the true story of a young dreamer, Philippe Petit, based on his autobiographical memoir "To Reach the Clouds."

2 hours, 3 minutes

Description:  "The Walk" recounts how Philippe (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) and a band of unlikely recruits together achieve the impossible: an illegal wire walk in the immense void between the World Trade Center towers. With little more than nerve and blind ambition, Petit and his ragtag crew overcome daunting physical obstacles, betrayals, countless close calls and overwhelming odds to beat the system and execute their mad plan. Director Robert Zemeckis, whose previous credits include "Back to the Future" and "Forrest Gump", received critical praise for his dazzling direction.  Gorgeous cinematography and gripping spectacle ultimately drive home this biopic. "The Walk" is an artful and cleverly planned story of its climatic sequence, paying homage to the artists and the structures it was executed upon.

Enjoy the movie with free popcorn!

ALBERT EINSTEIN: Relatively Speaking
6:00 PM - 7:00 PM

George Capaccio, as Albert Einstein, physicist and humanitarian, invites you to enter the boundary-breaking universe that is the mind of Albert Einstein. You will discover that time and space are inseparable, that time actually slows down the faster you go, and that if you could travel at the speed of light, time would actually stop!

As part of the show, you’ll time travel with George on the trajectory of Einstein’s life — from lowly patent clerk in a Swiss office to world-class physicist. And you’ll gain insight into two of his greatest scientific achievements: the special theory of relativity and the general theory of relativity, both of which overturned long-held views about the very nature of reality and pointed the way to the computer revolution of the 21st century.
