PPL Book Club - Head Full of Ghosts
7:00 PM - 8:00 PM

Join us to discuss Paul Tremblay's "Head Full of Ghosts."

A chilling thriller that brilliantly blends psychological suspense and supernatural horror, reminiscent of Stephen King's The Shining, Shirley Jackson's The Haunting of Hill House, and William Peter Blatty's The Exorcist.

The lives of the Barretts, a normal suburban New England family, are torn apart when fourteen-year-old Marjorie begins to display signs of acute schizophrenia.

To her parents’ despair, the doctors are unable to stop Marjorie’s descent into madness. As their stable home devolves into a house of horrors, they reluctantly turn to a local Catholic priest for help. Father Wanderly suggests an exorcism; he believes the vulnerable teenager is the victim of demonic possession. He also contacts a production company that is eager to document the Barretts’ plight. With John, Marjorie’s father, out of work for more than a year and the medical bills looming, the family agrees to be filmed, and soon find themselves the unwitting stars of The Possession, a hit reality television show. When events in the Barrett household explode in tragedy, the show and the shocking incidents it captures become the stuff of urban legend.

Fifteen years later, a bestselling writer interviews Marjorie’s younger sister, Merry. As she recalls those long ago events that took place when she was just eight years old, long-buried secrets and painful memories that clash with what was broadcast on television begin to surface—and a mind-bending tale of psychological horror is unleashed, raising vexing questions about memory and reality, science and religion, and the very nature of evil.

Building Bridges: Vintage Music of Latin America
2:00 PM - 3:30 PM

Acclaimed pianist, Jacqueline Schwab brings her new program to the library: Building Bridges—Vintage Music of Latin America

Jacqueline celebrates the sensual spirit, expressive melodies and pulsing dance rhythms of vintage habaneras, tangos, and waltzes, from Cuba, Brazil, Argentina, Venezuela and Mexico. These styles were the forerunners of samba, salsa, and other Latin music of today. Familiar and less well known melodies by composers Ernesto Nazareth, Ernesto Lecuona (made famous by I Love Lucy’s Desi Arnaz), Ignacio Cervantes, Juan Jose Castro and more, in classical and folk arrangements.

Pianist Jacqueline Schwab spins heartfelt musical stories, connecting listeners to the rich, multicultural strands of America’s musical tapestry. Her signature style—described by the New England Folk Almanac as “the jazz/classical improvisational spirit of Keith Jarrett and the touch of George Winston”—is hard to categorize but easy to recognize. In turns flowing or percussive, nuanced or primal, spare or embellished, reflective or passionate, elegiac or joyous, Jacqueline’s soulful playing speaks directly to the spirit. Her entwined classical and folk sensibilities arose from her childhood in Pittsburgh’s “melting pot” and further developed in Boston’s vibrant music scene. Her work with documentary film maker Ken Burns reacquainted her with Pittsburgh’s musical hero Stephen Foster and led to her folksy-yet-formal concerts of a diverse array of vintage American music.

In Ken Burns’ words: “Jacqueline Schwab brings more feeling and intensity to music than anyone I know. Her playing is insistent, physical, heartfelt and ... unusually moving.” Her distinctive playing infuses the sound tracks of Burns’ Grammy-winning Civil War, Baseball, Lewis and Clark, Mark Twain, The War, and The National Parks, among others. Critic Scott Alarik wrote she has “… an uncanny sensitivity to the moods and proprieties from other eras.” One listener wrote: “Your music, the touch you have, entwines the heart.”

She has also performed on The Irish in America, Ric Burns’ New York: A Documentary Film and others and has been composer for documentaries on the painter Mary Cassatt and on Mennonites. She has performed at the White House for President Clinton, and, with Scottish singer Jean Redpath, on public radio’s A Prairie Home Companion and on CBS’ Late Show with David Letterman. Jacqueline graduated from the New England Conservatory in Boston, majoring in piano improvisation in the Third Stream Department (renamed to Contemporary Improvisation). She has long played for English country dancing with the Bare Necessities quartet, whose flowing, group improvisational style and nationwide performances have inspired new generations of dancers and musicians. She has released four solo recordings and has played on over 50 other studio recordings, including with Scottish singer Jean Redpath, Scottish fiddlers Alasdair Fraser and Laura Risk, and Irish singer Aoife Clancy. She has performed concerts of vintage American music in almost every state of the Union.  She lives on Cape Cod, in Massachusetts.

ArtWeek2019 - Explore American Music with Mark T. Small
7:00 PM - 8:30 PM

Learn about the history of American Music with Mark T. Small. His concerts include instrumentals and singing and playing music from the early 1800s to the late 1950s. The show includes Mark's signature, foot stompin blues, boogie, early rock and honky-tonk selections.  Instrumental selections include: America The Beautiful, Amazing Grace, Autumn Leaves, Maple Leaf Rag, and many other dazzling, fancy guitar arrangements.

Mark establishes a personal connection with his audience by discussing the origin of music and providing the listener with insights into the history of the guitar and other instruments that have become critical to the development of American music. Listen and learn that the oldest guitar was discovered in Egypt and is over 3500 years old; or that Benjamin Franklin was a guitarist.  You might even find out what affect the Spanish American War has on American guitar players, or why and how fiddle music impacted the development of guitar music. No registration necessary.

PPL Book Club - The Incendiaries
7:00 PM - 8:00 PM

Join us to discuss R.O. Kwan's "The Incendiaries."

Phoebe Lin and Will Kendall meet in their first month at prestigious Edwards University. Phoebe is a glamorous girl who doesn't tell anyone she blames herself for her mother's recent death. Will is a misfit scholarship boy who transfers to Edwards from Bible college, waiting tables to get by. What he knows for sure is that he loves Phoebe.

Grieving and guilt-ridden, Phoebe is drawn into a secretive cult founded by a charismatic former student with an enigmatic past. When the group commits a violent act in the name of faith, Will finds himself struggling to confront a new version of the fanaticism he's worked so hard to escape. Haunting and intense, The Incendiaries is a fractured love story that explores what can befall those who lose what they love most.

PPL Cookbook Club - Dinner: Changing The Game
7:00 PM - 8:30 PM

The Cookbook Book Club meets once a month and reads/reviews a wide range of cookbooks to include: various cooking techniques, specific chefs, and ethnic cooking styles. The participants in the book club bring one dish to share from the cookbook and the group sits down together for potluck sampling.

The May meeting of the PPL Cookbook Club will explore recipes from "Dinner: Changing The Game" by Melissa Clark.

Melissa Clark is a staff writer for the New York Times, where she writes the Food section's popular column, "A Good Appetite" and stars in a weekly complementary video series. The recipient of both IACP and James Beard awards, Clark appears frequently on "Today" and on public radio.

Each recipe in "Dinner" is meant to be dinner—one fantastic dish that is so satisfying and flavor-forward it can stand alone—or be paired with a simple salad or fresh bread on the side. This is what Melissa Clark means by changing the game.

Organized by main ingredient—chicken, meat, fish and seafood, eggs, pasta and noodles, tofu, vegetable dinners, grains, pizza, soups, and salads that mean it—Dinner covers an astonishing breadth of recipes. There is something for every mood, season, and the amount of time you have: sheet pan chicken laced with spicy harissa, burgers amped with chorizo, curried lentils with poached eggs, to name just a few dishes in this indispensable collection. Here, too, are easy flourishes that make dinner exceptional: stir charred lemon into pasta, toss creamy Caesar-like dressing on a grain bowl.

Copies will be available to check out at the circulation desk. There is also a copy available to view at the Reference Desk. Registration is requested, sign up by clicking on the button to register. Please let us know what you're bringing to avoid duplications! Fill out the form below when you register. Not sure what you want to make yet? Tuesday Night Movie - The Walk (PG)
6:00 PM - 8:30 PM

Join us for the first Tuesday of every month for an entertaining film.   This month we will show "The Walk", the true story of a young dreamer, Philippe Petit, based on his autobiographical memoir "To Reach the Clouds."

2 hours, 3 minutes

Description:  "The Walk" recounts how Philippe (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) and a band of unlikely recruits together achieve the impossible: an illegal wire walk in the immense void between the World Trade Center towers. With little more than nerve and blind ambition, Petit and his ragtag crew overcome daunting physical obstacles, betrayals, countless close calls and overwhelming odds to beat the system and execute their mad plan. Director Robert Zemeckis, whose previous credits include "Back to the Future" and "Forrest Gump", received critical praise for his dazzling direction.  Gorgeous cinematography and gripping spectacle ultimately drive home this biopic. "The Walk" is an artful and cleverly planned story of its climatic sequence, paying homage to the artists and the structures it was executed upon.

Enjoy the movie with free popcorn!

PPL Book Club - There There
7:00 PM - 8:00 PM

Join us to discuss Tommy Orange's "There There."

Tommy Orange’s “groundbreaking, extraordinary” (The New York TimesThere There is the “brilliant, propulsive” (People Magazine) story of twelve unforgettable characters, Urban Indians living in Oakland, California, who converge and collide on one fateful day. It’s “the year’s most galvanizing debut novel” (Entertainment Weekly).

As we learn the reasons that each person is attending the Big Oakland Powwow—some generous, some fearful, some joyful, some violent—momentum builds toward a shocking yet inevitable conclusion that changes everything. Jacquie Red Feather is newly sober and trying to make it back to the family she left behind in shame. Dene Oxendene is pulling his life back together after his uncle’s death and has come to work at the powwow to honor his uncle’s memory. Opal Viola Victoria Bear Shield has come to watch her nephew Orvil, who has taught himself traditional Indian dance through YouTube videos and will to perform in public for the very first time. There will be glorious communion, and a spectacle of sacred tradition and pageantry. And there will be sacrifice, and heroism, and loss.

There There is a wondrous and shattering portrait of an America few of us have ever seenIt’s “masterful . . . white-hot . . . devastating” (The Washington Post) at the same time as it is fierce, funny, suspenseful, thoroughly modern, and impossible to put down. Here is a voice we have never heard—a voice full of poetry and rage, exploding onto the page with urgency and force. Tommy Orange has written a stunning novel that grapples with a complex and painful history, with an inheritance of beauty and profound spirituality, and with a plague of addiction, abuse, and suicide. This is the book that everyone is talking about right now, and it’s destined to be a classic.

ALBERT EINSTEIN: Relatively Speaking
6:00 PM - 7:00 PM

George Capaccio, as Albert Einstein, physicist and humanitarian, invites you to enter the boundary-breaking universe that is the mind of Albert Einstein. You will discover that time and space are inseparable, that time actually slows down the faster you go, and that if you could travel at the speed of light, time would actually stop!

As part of the show, you’ll time travel with George on the trajectory of Einstein’s life — from lowly patent clerk in a Swiss office to world-class physicist. And you’ll gain insight into two of his greatest scientific achievements: the special theory of relativity and the general theory of relativity, both of which overturned long-held views about the very nature of reality and pointed the way to the computer revolution of the 21st century.

PPL Book Club - Stardust
7:00 PM - 8:00 PM

Join Us to discuss Neil Gaiman's "Stardust."

Tristran Thorn will do anything to win the cold heart of beautiful Victoria Forester—even fetch her the star they watch fall from the night sky. But to do so, he must enter the unexplored lands on the other side of the ancient wall that gives their tiny village its name. Beyond that stone barrier, Tristran learns, lies Faerie...and the most exhilarating adventure of the young man's life.

From #1 New York Times bestselling author Neil Gaiman comes a tale of the dark and miraculous—a quest for true love and the utterly impossible.

PPL Book Club At Manomet Stardust
2:30 PM - 3:30 PM

Armchair Travel for Seniors: ICELAND, Land of Fire & Ice
10:30 AM - 11:30 AM

ICELAND - Land of Fire and Ice, a Senior Armchair Travel Program.
Neil Degrasse Tyson, author of our Summer Reading book and host of the Cosmos: A Spacetime Odyssey series, says of Iceland, “Nothing comes close [to Iceland] — not that I’ve been everywhere in the world, maybe something else does come close and I don’t know it yet.”
“We filmed several episodes, and bits and pieces of  'Cosmos: A Spacetime Odyssey' in Iceland….[because] it’s still geologically alive. So it was one stop shopping. It just had so many backdrops to tell a story that could excite your interest in places you’ve never been, in alien landscapes you may have only dreamed about.”

Join Senior librarian, Tom Cummiskey as he takes you on a seven-day tour of the highlights of Iceland, from exciting Reykjavik to some of the most vast and distant landscapes on Earth.  Refreshments provided by Sunrise of Plymouth.

PPL Book Club - 2001: A Space Odyssey
7:00 PM - 8:30 PM

Join us to discuss Arthur C. Clarke's "2001: a Space Odyssey."

From the savannas of Africa at the dawn of mankind to the rings of Saturn as man ventures to the outer rim of our solar system, 2001: A Space Odyssey is a journey unlike any other.

This allegory about humanity’s exploration of the universe—and the universe’s reaction to humanity—is a hallmark achievement in storytelling that follows the crew of the spacecraft Discovery as they embark on a mission to Saturn. Their vessel is controlled by HAL 9000, an artificially intelligent supercomputer capable of the highest level of cognitive functioning that rivals—and perhaps threatens—the human mind.

Grappling with space exploration, the perils of technology, and the limits of human power, 2001: A Space Odyssey continues to be an enduring classic of cinematic scope.
