Can Poirot identify the killer before the ship reaches the end of its Peter Ustinov plays the intrepid Belgian sleuth Hercule Poirot in this star-studded and stylish screen adaptation of Agatha Christie's classic mystery tale. On a trip down the Nile, a hateful and arrogant heiress is murdered and any one of a boatload of celebrity suspects, all with motive and something to hide, may have committed the deed. Amongst the suspects are Angela Lansbury as a ditzy romance novelist; Bette Davis as a snobbish socialite with Maggie Smith in tow as her embittered friend; Jack Warden as a comic Swiss doctor with a music hall accent; and Jon Finch as a rabid Marxist. Also on hand to help out is David Niven as Poirot's pal, Colonel Race.

Native American Nature Tales
11:00 AM - 12:00 PM

Native American Nature Tales brings to life tribal myths and legends of the animals and birds of North America. Ranging from the humorous to the heart-felt, these stories celebrate native culture and its strong links to the natural world. We learn an Abenaki canoeing song, explore over seven different animals in the Northwest legend of Loon’s Song and discover why America is called Turtle Island. Join one of New England’s favorite tellers as these rich stories create a colorful weave embracing all of nature. Diane has been given permission to tell these tales from many prominent Native American authors. For families with children of all ages. No registration required.

This event has been developed with a donation from the Jen Kane Scholarship and Charitable Trust which provides scholarships, endowments and donations to charitable foundations in memory of Jen Kane, a Plymouth native who lost her life in the World Trade Center on September 11th.

PPL Book Club - Circe
7:00 PM - 8:00 PM

This November, we will be reading "Circe" by Madeline Miller, a novel that The New York Times hails as "a bold and subversive retelling of the goddess's story." Copies will be available at the Circulation Desk.

"In the house of Helios, god of the sun and mightiest of the Titans, a daughter is born. But Circe is a strange child--not powerful, like her father, nor viciously alluring like her mother. Turning to the world of mortals for companionship, she discovers that she does possess power--the power of witchcraft, which can transform rivals into monsters and menace the gods themselves.

Threatened, Zeus banishes her to a deserted island, where she hones her occult craft, tames wild beasts and crosses paths with many of the most famous figures in all of mythology, including the Minotaur, Daedalus and his doomed son Icarus, the murderous Medea, and, of course, wily Odysseus.

But there is danger, too, for a woman who stands alone, and Circe unwittingly draws the wrath of both men and gods, ultimately finding herself pitted against one of the most terrifying and vengeful of the Olympians. To protect what she loves most, Circe must summon all her strength and choose, once and for all, whether she belongs with the gods she is born from, or the mortals she has come to love.

With unforgettably vivid characters, mesmerizing language and page-turning suspense, Circe is a triumph of storytelling, an intoxicating epic of family rivalry, palace intrigue, love and loss, as well as a celebration of indomitable female strength in a man's world."

Tuesday Night Movie - Scrooge the Musical
6:00 PM - 8:00 PM

Join us for the first Tuesday of every month for an entertaining film.   This month we will show Scrooge, The Musical based on the classic A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens.

1 hour, 26 minutes (G)

Description:  This engaging musical by Leslie Bricusse finds Scrooge (Albert Finney) as the parsimonious miser with a heart of stone who hates the revelry of the Christmas holiday. He is visited by the ghost of his former business partner Jacob Marley (Alec Guinness) who warns Scrooge he will walk the Earth forever tormented if he fails to change his ways. He is visited by three spirits, the ghosts of Christmas Past (Edith Evans), Present (Kenneth More), and Future (Paddy Stone). Scrooge feels compassion for Tiny Tim (Richard Beaumont), the crippled but hopeful son of his underpaid and overworked bookkeeper Bob Crachit (David Collings). Laurence Naismith plays Fezziwig, Scrooge's first boss who showed great kindness and generosity to his employees. Susan Neve makes her film debut as Isabel, the fiance Scrooge jilted to focus on his love for money.

Enjoy the movie with free popcorn!

PPL Book Club - The Silent Wife
7:00 PM - 8:00 PM

This December, we will be reading "The Silent Wife" by A.S.A. Harrison. Reminiscent of Gone Girl and Girl on the Train, this thriller is rumored to soon become a motion picture starring Nicole Kidman.

Jodi and Todd are at a bad place in their marriage. Much is at stake, including the affluent life they lead in their beautiful waterfront condo in Chicago, as she, the killer, and he, the victim, rush haplessly toward the main event. He is a committed cheater. She lives and breathes denial. He exists in dual worlds. She likes to settle scores. He decides to play for keeps. She has nothing left to lose. Told in alternating voices, "The Silent Wife" is about a marriage in the throes of dissolution, a couple headed for catastrophe, concessions that can’t be made, and promises that won’t be kept. Expertly plotted and reminiscent of "Gone Girl" and "These Things Hidden," "The Silent Wife" ensnares the reader from page one and does not let go.

Meravelha will present Medieval Solstice & Traditional Music with songs and tunes of winter solstice and holiday favorites from the medieval days of old.  With harp, percussion, vielle and voice, the eight member Meravelha ensemble will provide an educational, theatrical and festive holiday concert for Seniors and friends.  Using music, poetry, and movement, the ensemble tells stories that reflect themes illustrated within the songs and cultures of the 11th-15th centuries.  The name “Meravelha,” which translates as “marvel” or “wonder” was taken from the song “Non es meravelha s’eu chan” (It is no wonder that I sing) by Bernard de Ventadorn, a 12th-century troubadour.
Refreshments provided by Plymouth Senior Living by Sunrise.

Building Bridges: Vintage Music of Latin America
2:00 PM - 3:30 PM

Acclaimed pianist, Jacqueline Schwab brings her new program to the library: Building Bridges—Vintage Music of Latin America

Jacqueline celebrates the sensual spirit, expressive melodies and pulsing dance rhythms of vintage habaneras, tangos, and waltzes, from Cuba, Brazil, Argentina, Venezuela and Mexico. These styles were the forerunners of samba, salsa, and other Latin music of today. Familiar and less well known melodies by composers Ernesto Nazareth, Ernesto Lecuona (made famous by I Love Lucy’s Desi Arnaz), Ignacio Cervantes, Juan Jose Castro and more, in classical and folk arrangements.

Pianist Jacqueline Schwab spins heartfelt musical stories, connecting listeners to the rich, multicultural strands of America’s musical tapestry. Her signature style—described by the New England Folk Almanac as “the jazz/classical improvisational spirit of Keith Jarrett and the touch of George Winston”—is hard to categorize but easy to recognize. In turns flowing or percussive, nuanced or primal, spare or embellished, reflective or passionate, elegiac or joyous, Jacqueline’s soulful playing speaks directly to the spirit. Her entwined classical and folk sensibilities arose from her childhood in Pittsburgh’s “melting pot” and further developed in Boston’s vibrant music scene. Her work with documentary film maker Ken Burns reacquainted her with Pittsburgh’s musical hero Stephen Foster and led to her folksy-yet-formal concerts of a diverse array of vintage American music.

In Ken Burns’ words: “Jacqueline Schwab brings more feeling and intensity to music than anyone I know. Her playing is insistent, physical, heartfelt and ... unusually moving.” Her distinctive playing infuses the sound tracks of Burns’ Grammy-winning Civil War, Baseball, Lewis and Clark, Mark Twain, The War, and The National Parks, among others. Critic Scott Alarik wrote she has “… an uncanny sensitivity to the moods and proprieties from other eras.” One listener wrote: “Your music, the touch you have, entwines the heart.”

She has also performed on The Irish in America, Ric Burns’ New York: A Documentary Film and others and has been composer for documentaries on the painter Mary Cassatt and on Mennonites. She has performed at the White House for President Clinton, and, with Scottish singer Jean Redpath, on public radio’s A Prairie Home Companion and on CBS’ Late Show with David Letterman. Jacqueline graduated from the New England Conservatory in Boston, majoring in piano improvisation in the Third Stream Department (renamed to Contemporary Improvisation). She has long played for English country dancing with the Bare Necessities quartet, whose flowing, group improvisational style and nationwide performances have inspired new generations of dancers and musicians. She has released four solo recordings and has played on over 50 other studio recordings, including with Scottish singer Jean Redpath, Scottish fiddlers Alasdair Fraser and Laura Risk, and Irish singer Aoife Clancy. She has performed concerts of vintage American music in almost every state of the Union.  She lives on Cape Cod, in Massachusetts.
