Afternoon Tea in Guernsey
3:00 PM - 5:00 PM

In the spirit of Juliet, Amelia, Isola, Dawsey, Sidney and all our friends from the bestselling, The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society, enjoy afternoon tea (hot and cold), with traditional sandwiches and delicate cakes.  If you like, bring your favorite tea cup and saucer!  Noted Tea specialist and former owner of Hallowed Herbs Tea House, Lisa Tavakoli, will be on hand to provide a little history of tea during wartime and provide samples and teas for sale.

In 1946, handwritten notes, letters and postcards were the social media of the day.  By writing short notes on postcards to public library patrons in Guernsey, we’ll make connections with the click of a pen and an airmail postcard stamp. Weather permitting, tour the back garden where we are growing flowers and vegetables.  1940’s attire is encouraged.  (Postcards and stamps will be provided)

Some refreshments will be provided by Sunrise Senior Living of Plymouth.

Book Discussion: Guernsey Literary & Potato Peel Pie Society
10:30 AM - 12:00 PM

Our Summer Reading book for Seniors is the heartwarming and endearing, The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society, by Mary Ann Shaffer and Annie Barrows.  Written in epistolary form, Guernsey relates the story of  author, Juliet Ashton--a London based 30-something with an old soul, who learns about a Book Club that formed during the Nazi Occupation in 1940's Guernsey, Channel Islands, UK--just 40 miles to France. The islanders were on their own for the most part, and endured unimaginable hardship and stress due to their tiny island being taken over by invaders.
The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society was rather hastily formed, but soon the comraderie and mutual love of books became the glue that kept people sane by retaining some semblance of normalcy in an otherwise dark period in history.  Memorable characters, friendship, love, loss, and new found meaning/purpose in life are all explored.
Outreach Librarian, Tom Cummiskey will lead the discussion.  Tea and scones will be served.

Selected Reviews:

“A sparkling epistolary novel radiating wit, lightly worn erudition and written with great assurance and aplomb.”—The Sunday Times (London)

“Cooked perfectly à point: subtle and elegant in flavour, yet emotionally satisfying to the finish.”—The Times (London)

“A sweet, sentimental paean to books and those who love them. . . . It affirms the power of books to nourish people enduring hard times.”—The Washington Post Book World

PTA Leadership Training
6:00 PM - 8:00 PM
Open to ALL PTA leaders and members. Each summer, information for Presidents, Vice Presidents, Treasurers, Secretaries, along with information for Membership, Advocacy, Fundraising, Health, and Reflections Chairs, makes this event a unique energizing start to everyone's PTA year. Get up to date on the latest rules and regulations from the IRS and Commonwealth of Massachusetts, sharpen your leadership and advocacy skills, learn about programs and grants, and take advantage of the networking opportunities.

We are requiring that each PTA send a representative to summer leadership as the Massachusetts PTA standards of affiliation require that someone from each PTA attend at least one training each year. The person attending does not have to be an officer of the PTA, it can be a member who is interested in moving up or if there is someone that you think would be good to move up, or just a representative from the school. This is an excellent opportunity for any member who wants to know more about what PTA has to offer. Everyone is welcome; we hope that you and your other members will join us. Please register by emailing the Massachusetts PTA at info@masspta.org so that we can have enough materials for everyone.

Tuesday Night Movie - Oklahoma
6:00 PM - 8:00 PM

The film for the last of our August Tuesday Night Movies is the classic musical Oklahoma!

2 hour, 25 minute - Rated G

Description: Rodgers and Hammerstein's 1943 Broadway musical Oklahoma was turned into a classic film version in 1955 starring Gordon MacRae, Shirley Jones, Gloria Grahame, and Rod Steiger. The story can be boiled down to a single sentence: a girl must decide between the two suitors who want to take her to a social. In her movie debut, 19-year-old Shirley Jones plays Laurie, an Oklahoma farm gal who is courted by boisterous cowboy Curley (Gordon MacRae) and by menacing, obsessive farm hand Jud Frye (Rod Steiger). Fearing that Jud will do something terrible to Curley, Laurie accepts Jud's invitation to the box social. But it's Curley who rescues Laurie from Jud's unwanted advances, and in so doing wins her hand. On the eve of their wedding, Laurie and Curley are menaced by the drunken Jud. During a fight with Curley, Jud falls on his own knife and is killed. Songs include Oh, What a Beautiful Mornin', Surrey with the Fringe on Top, People Will Say We're In Love, I Cain't Say No, and the rousing title song.

PPL Book Club
7:00 PM - 8:00 PM

The PPL Book Club will discuss "The Locals," by Jonathan Dee

“After 9/11, New York hedge fund billionaire Philip Hadi retreats to his summer home in the Berkshires. In thrall to his new town, he runs for office to keep it sleepy, sweet and free from tax hikes. Is he benevolent, arrogant or both? No one gets off the moral hook in this propulsive, brilliantly observed study.”People (Book of the Week)

“Thoughtful . . . [Jonathan Dee’s] prescient sensitivity has never been more unnerving. . . . Amid the heat of today’s vicious political climate, The Locals is a smoke alarm. Listen up.”—Ron Charles, The Washington Post

Author Grady Hendrix - Paperbacks from Hell LIVE
7:00 PM - 8:30 PM

Join us for an evening with Award-winning author, Grady Hendrix who will entertain and educate the public about Horror paperbacks in his program entitled PAPERBACKS FROM HELL LIVE!  The artwork alone sets the stage.  In the early Seventies, three books changed horror forever: ROSEMARY'S BABY, THE EXORCIST, and THE OTHER. The first horror novels to hit bestseller lists since 1940, they opened the floodgates for an avalanche of horror paperbacks to pour onto supermarket shelves throughout the Seventies and Eighties until SILENCE OF THE LAMBS slit the genre's throat in the early Nineties. Writer Grady Hendrix delivers a mind-melting oral history of this now forgotten world of Nazi leprechauns, skeleton doctors, killer crabs, killer jellyfish, killer babies, pretty much killer everything. Prepare yourself for a tour of this long-lost universe of terror that lurked behind the lurid, foil-embossed, die-cut covers of...the Paperbacks from Hell!!!!  Book signing at the conclusion of the program.

ENTER at the side door by the book drop.

A Gullwing at Twilight: Film & Discussion
10:30 AM - 12:00 PM

Join us for another film and discussion led by Cape Cod filmmaker, Chris Swedo.  A Gullwing at Twilight follows the car racing legend, John Fitch, who at age 87 takes on a new challenge: attempting a land speed record on Utah's Bonneville Salt Flats.   Saturday, October 13 at 11 AM.  (Film is 55 minutes.  Discussion afterwards)  Refreshments courtesy of Brookdale of Plymouth.

“A GULLWING AT TWILIGHT explores Fitch the man, whose reputation as the consummate gentleman racer persists. The power of this film lies not in reliving the past, but rather in its focus on Fitch continually challenging himself, and our outdated notions of what elderly persons can accomplish. Racing, people, and nature unite in this thoughtful documentary."
