Massachusetts & Gun Violence: The Types, The Laws and You
7:00 PM - 8:30 PM

The news has been filled with stories of horrific assaults throughout the country. This presentation will take you into a deeper discussion of the dynamics and types of gun violence. Specifically, we will discuss five distinct categories: mass shootings, accidental shootings, domestic violence, community violence, and firearm suicides, and the different responses required by each of these categories. Additionally, we will discuss the Massachusetts laws we already have in place, and the legislative priorities focused on by the MA Coalition to Prevent Gun Violence. Participants will learn what each of us can do to take action against gun violence both locally and beyond.

The speaker, Ruth Zakarin, is a licensed independent clinical social worker (LICSW).  She has  spent over twenty years working with survivors of domestic and sexual violence, as well as human trafficking. She also has extensive experience in violence prevention, developing and implementing public awareness campaigns, and community organizing.  In May of 2019, Ruth became the Executive Director of the Massachusetts Coalition to Prevent Gun Violence, which includes over 90 member organizations working in collaboration to address gun violence in our communities.

After more than fifteen years of world-wide touring and three album releases, Rebecca Hall and Ken Anderson--otherwise known as the folk duo Hungrytown--have earned a reputation for the quality and authenticity of their songwriting: Inspired by the grit and true-to-life experiences in traditional ballads, Hall was inspired to write the lyrics that later became her first songs, aided by Anderson’s flair for musical arrangement. Ray (2004) Rated PG-13

Born in a poor town in Georgia, Ray Charles went blind at the age of seven shortly after witnessing his younger brother's accidental death. Inspired by a fiercely independent mother who insisted he make his own way in the world, Charles found his calling and his gift behind a piano keyboard. Touring across the Southern musical circuit, the soulful singer gained a reputation and then exploded with worldwide fame when he pioneered incorporating gospel, country, jazz and orchestral influences into his inimitable style. As he revolutionized the way people appreciated music, he simultaneously fought segregation in the very clubs that launched him and championed artists' rights within the corporate music business.

Food For Thought - The Origins of Massachusetts Foods and Why It Matters
10:00 AM - 5:00 PM

ONGOING EXHIBIT IN REFERENCE DEPARTMENT

Historians call the colonial era movement of plants, animals, people, and diseases the “Columbian Exchange.” We live with its consequences, positive and negative, to this day. In Massachusetts, a similar process unfolded as English settlers came into contact with native people. This exhibit explores that exchange, focusing on food, ecological changes, and the pleasant culinary legacy from that distant and turbulent time.  (Exhibit on display through December 31st. A traveling exhibit provided by the Commonwealth Museum)

Across the Universe (2007) Rated PG-13

"Across the Universe" is a love story set against the backdrop of the 1960s amid the turbulent years of anti-war protest, mind exploration and rock 'n roll, moving from the dockyards of Liverpool to the creative psychedelia of Greenwich Village, from the riot-torn streets of Detroit to the killing fields of Vietnam. The star-crossed lovers, Jude and Lucy, along with a small group of friends and musicians, are swept up into the emerging anti-war and counterculture movements, with "Dr. Robert" and "Mr. Kite" as their guides. Tumultuous forces outside their control ultimately tear the young lovers apart, forcing Jude and Lucy--against all odds--to find their own way back to each other.

Finding Health/Medical Information Made Easy
3:30 PM - 4:30 PM

Are you not very computer savvy?  Do you find searching the Internet a bit frustrating at times?  We have the healthy solution for you with our Outreach/Medical Librarian, Tom Cummiskey, who will show you exactly how to find reliable, current and easy to understand information on a host of medical topics.  The class is hands-on, working in teams of two, with interesting examples from history and literature.  For the upcoming Holiday season, we'll take a look at common cold prevention strategies, arthritis discomfort prevention in cold weather, and eating healthy as the holidays approach, as we discover a variety of sites from the National Library of Medicine.  Free print-outs are available on medical topics, as well as refreshments.

This Consumer Health class is funded through a Health Literacy grant from the South Shore Community Partners in Prevention, CHNA-23.  This project is funded in part by the National Library of Medicine, National Institutes of Health, Department of Health and Human Services, under Cooperative Agreement Number UG4LM012347 with the University of Massachusetts Medical School, Worcester.

Pilgrims' Progress: Music of the Plimoth Colony Settlers 1590-1645
7:00 PM - 8:15 PM

Seven Times Salt presents this hour-long program following the settlers from their homes in England’s cities and countryside, to religious refuge in the Netherlands, and onward to their challenging though fulfilling life in Plimoth Colony. We’ll celebrate Plymouth's 400th anniversary with music of the Elizabethan tavern and theater; spirited catches by Thomas Ravenscroft; selections from the Dutch ‘t Uitnement Kabinet, stirring psalms from Sternhold & Hopkins’ Whole Booke of Psalmes, and vigorous tunes from Playford's The English Dancing Master. You'll also hear fictitious "diary entries" of the colonists read aloud in Original Pronunciation, the English of Shakespeare, Queen Elizabeth I-- and the Pilgrims!
