PPL Book Club At Manomet - There There
2:30 PM - 3:30 PM

Join us to discuss Tommy Orange's "There There."

Tommy Orange’s “groundbreaking, extraordinary” (The New York TimesThere There is the “brilliant, propulsive” (People Magazine) story of twelve unforgettable characters, Urban Indians living in Oakland, California, who converge and collide on one fateful day. It’s “the year’s most galvanizing debut novel” (Entertainment Weekly).

As we learn the reasons that each person is attending the Big Oakland Powwow—some generous, some fearful, some joyful, some violent—momentum builds toward a shocking yet inevitable conclusion that changes everything. Jacquie Red Feather is newly sober and trying to make it back to the family she left behind in shame. Dene Oxendene is pulling his life back together after his uncle’s death and has come to work at the powwow to honor his uncle’s memory. Opal Viola Victoria Bear Shield has come to watch her nephew Orvil, who has taught himself traditional Indian dance through YouTube videos and will to perform in public for the very first time. There will be glorious communion, and a spectacle of sacred tradition and pageantry. And there will be sacrifice, and heroism, and loss.

There There is a wondrous and shattering portrait of an America few of us have ever seenIt’s “masterful . . . white-hot . . . devastating” (The Washington Post) at the same time as it is fierce, funny, suspenseful, thoroughly modern, and impossible to put down. Here is a voice we have never heard—a voice full of poetry and rage, exploding onto the page with urgency and force. Tommy Orange has written a stunning novel that grapples with a complex and painful history, with an inheritance of beauty and profound spirituality, and with a plague of addiction, abuse, and suicide. This is the book that everyone is talking about right now, and it’s destined to be a classic.

The Starry Messenger: Galileo portrayed by Mike Francis
6:00 PM - 7:00 PM

To many the Universe is a closed book of secrets never to be read. Almost four hundred years ago, an unknown court mathematician in Italy opened that book and laid the foundation for modern science. Galileo Galilei turned his telescope to the heavens to discover mountains and craters on the moon, four moons of Jupiter, and countless stars never before seen. Even more significant was his method of observation and mathematical analysis. He taught future scientists the way to discover the laws of nature.

The Starry Messenger is a dramatic fun filled adaptation of Galileo's short treatise Siderius Nuncius. Galileo (dressed in 17th century costume) arrives at your organization to present a public lecture on his most recent discoveries made using his newly devised spyglass. As he describes those discoveries, Galileo's new method of observation and measurement of nature become apparent.

One of our projects is to possibly get a new stamp issued celebrating Plymouth’s 400th celebration. It’s a lengthy process and we could use some help for our part in the 400 th.

If you have questions about stamps stop in and see us. Donations welcome for our bookmark project which I hope to continue to give away at the library. See the world- collect stamps!

PPL Book Club - Stardust
7:00 PM - 8:00 PM

Join Us to discuss Neil Gaiman's "Stardust."

Tristran Thorn will do anything to win the cold heart of beautiful Victoria Forester—even fetch her the star they watch fall from the night sky. But to do so, he must enter the unexplored lands on the other side of the ancient wall that gives their tiny village its name. Beyond that stone barrier, Tristran learns, lies Faerie...and the most exhilarating adventure of the young man's life.

From #1 New York Times bestselling author Neil Gaiman comes a tale of the dark and miraculous—a quest for true love and the utterly impossible.

PPL Cookbook Club - Six Seasons by Joshua McFadden
7:00 PM - 8:30 PM

The Cookbook Book Club meets once a month and reads/reviews a wide range of cookbooks to include: various cooking techniques, specific chefs, and ethnic cooking styles. The participants in the book club bring one dish to share from the cookbook and the group sits down together for potluck sampling.

The July meeting of the PPL Cookbook Club will explore recipes from "Six Seasons: A New Way with Vegetables" by Joshua McFadden.

This is a multiple award winning cookbook, including being named the James Beard Award for Best Book in Vegetable-Focused Cooking and Best Cookbook of the Year by the Wall Street Journal, The Atlantic, Bon Appétit, Food Network Magazine, Every Day with Rachael Ray, USA Today, Seattle Times, Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel, Library Journal, Eater, and more.

Joshua McFadden, chef and owner of renowned trattoria Ava Gene’s in Portland, Oregon, has been called a vegetable whisperer. In "Six Seasons," his first book, McFadden channels both farmer and chef, highlighting the evolving attributes of vegetables throughout their growing seasons—an arc from spring to early summer to midsummer to the bursting harvest of late summer, then ebbing into autumn and, finally, the earthy, mellow sweetness of winter. Each chapter begins with recipes featuring raw vegetables at the start of their season. As weeks progress, McFadden turns up the heat—grilling and steaming, then moving on to sautés, pan roasts, braises, and stews. His ingenuity is on display in 225 revelatory recipes that celebrate flavor at its peak.

Copies will be available to check out at the circulation desk. There is also a copy available to view at the Reference Desk. Registration is requested, sign up by clicking on the button to register. Armchair Travel for Seniors: ICELAND, Land of Fire & Ice
10:30 AM - 11:30 AM

ICELAND - Land of Fire and Ice, a Senior Armchair Travel Program.
Neil Degrasse Tyson, author of our Summer Reading book and host of the Cosmos: A Spacetime Odyssey series, says of Iceland, “Nothing comes close [to Iceland] — not that I’ve been everywhere in the world, maybe something else does come close and I don’t know it yet.”
“We filmed several episodes, and bits and pieces of  'Cosmos: A Spacetime Odyssey' in Iceland….[because] it’s still geologically alive. So it was one stop shopping. It just had so many backdrops to tell a story that could excite your interest in places you’ve never been, in alien landscapes you may have only dreamed about.”

Join Senior librarian, Tom Cummiskey as he takes you on a seven-day tour of the highlights of Iceland, from exciting Reykjavik to some of the most vast and distant landscapes on Earth.  Refreshments provided by Sunrise of Plymouth.

Angela Easterling

Angela Easterling brandishes her songwriting chops with rootsy, refreshing, homespun tunes. Her backing band, The Beguilers (bass, drums and lead guitar), master many complex styles, with instrumentation that fleshes out the stories in Angela’s songs, and adds some rocking fun. Their act is not quite country, not quite folk, but all together unique and engaging.

PPL Book Club - 2001: A Space Odyssey
7:00 PM - 8:30 PM

Join us to discuss Arthur C. Clarke's "2001: a Space Odyssey."

From the savannas of Africa at the dawn of mankind to the rings of Saturn as man ventures to the outer rim of our solar system, 2001: A Space Odyssey is a journey unlike any other.

This allegory about humanity’s exploration of the universe—and the universe’s reaction to humanity—is a hallmark achievement in storytelling that follows the crew of the spacecraft Discovery as they embark on a mission to Saturn. Their vessel is controlled by HAL 9000, an artificially intelligent supercomputer capable of the highest level of cognitive functioning that rivals—and perhaps threatens—the human mind.

Grappling with space exploration, the perils of technology, and the limits of human power, 2001: A Space Odyssey continues to be an enduring classic of cinematic scope.

Afternoon Tea: Creating Space for Tea
3:00 PM - 4:30 PM

Our annual Afternoon Tea takes place in September this year with the theme, Creating Space for Tea.  Space is not only where Neil Armstrong explored 50 years ago this Summer, space is also about taking the time out of the day for a break.  Balance is so important where health is concerned, so any tea that helps restore balance and harmony is reason enough to create space.  On Saturday, September 14th at 3:00 pm, Tea Expert, Lisa Tavakoli returns, bringing her own wonderful tea blends, and sharing the many medicinal benefits of tea and tea time.   Register in advance on our calendar of events.
