Wingmasters

Birds of prey are also known as raptors, and they are hunting birds characterized by hooked beaks and powerful grabbing feet armed with sharp talons (the word raptor comes from a Latin word that means "to seize"). Raptors can also boast the best eyesight and the sharpest hearing in the animal kingdom. Raptors include hawks, falcons and owls, and this presentation, which incorporates 5-6 live birds of prey gives an overview of these different categories. The program is designed to explain predation, the birds' place at the top of the food web, their different hunting adaptations and their status in a rapidly changing world. Because many birds of prey are declining in number, this presentation also features one or more of the endangered raptors that WINGMASTERS cares for, and explains why these species face an uncertain future.

**Paid for by the Friends of the Rockland Memorial Library.**

Butterflies represent some of the most beautiful and helpful creatures in our world; Think of them as like real-life fairies! You can watch them as the flit about from flower to flower. Together, we will explore some of the amazing world of butterflies found in our own backyard. We will discuss their lifecycles and some of the challenges they face each day. We will also talk about some of the important ways we can help these real-life fairies continue to flourish.

Author Talk: John Hill

The Friends are excited to host this timely talk about capitalism in light of current politics.

John Hill is the author of Adams Smith’s Equality and the Pursuit of Happiness

John Hill describes his expected audience as “any thinking person aware of politics” and adds, “Adam Smith, the ‘father of capitalism’, proposed several principles that would help mitigate or eliminate some of the problems we face as a nation today. Many assume that our current laissez-faire capitalism applies his principles. But, in contrast to the libertarianism of the United States, Smith’s recipe to increase everyone’s wealth and happiness was justice, liberty, and equality. His famous book, Wealth of Nations, provides several additional principles that might promote the good life for all. Adam Smith’s Equality and the Pursuit of Happiness explains these principles and offers examples of how they might be applied in the United States today.  I respect different perspectives, so much so that my wife says I sometimes sound like a conservative. It is so important for Americans to be able to speak to each other. Capitalism and happiness seem to be topics that promote discussion.”

John Hill is an award-winning Professor of Politics and History at Curry College. He is also the author of Democracy, Equality and Justice: John Adams, Adam Smith and Political Economy (2007).

Free and open to the public. The author's books will be available for purchase.

Light refreshments will be provided by the Library Friends group.

This program is sponsored by the Friends Division of the Rockland Memorial Library Foundation, Inc., a non-profit, 501(c)(3) organization that raises funds to supplement municipal support for library services through membership dues and fundraisers.
