Advanced Writing: Creative Non-Fiction with Kara Westerman

This is an ongoing advanced writing class for writers who have been writing for a number of years and are ready to go to the next level. We will explore personal essay, memoir and other types of creative non-fiction. This workshop will include rigorous critique to aid in editing, revision and rewriting. Through writing exercises using different authors' work as inspiration, we will explore craft, structure, and point of view. Karl Grossman, whose paternal grandparents settled in Sag Harbor more than a century ago, will discuss the history of Jews on the East End and their places of worship. He will talk about the oldest synagogue on Long Island, Temple Adas Israel in Sag Harbor; the Jewish Center of the Hamptons in East Hampton; Congregation Tifereth Israel in Greenport; North Fork Reform Synagogue in Cutchogue; Temple Israel in Riverhead; The Hampton Synagogue in Westhampton Beach; Conservative Synagogue of the Hamptons in Bridgehampton; and the newest houses of worship on the East End, the chabads in Southampton, East Hampton and Montauk. He will explore the variety that exists among the various Jewish communities and how their distinct characteristics have influenced their history.

There is a common misperception among many that yoga is primarily for women. Its benefits, however, are equally felt by members of both sexes: increased flexibility, enhanced muscle strength and balance, increased bone density, improved posture, enhanced cardiovascular ability, an improved immune system, and more.  Join us for a session outlining the basics of yoga, with a special focus on areas of particular challenge for the typical male physique. This is an ongoing advanced writing class for writers who have been writing for a number of years and are ready to go to the next level. We will explore personal essay, memoir and other types of creative non-fiction. This workshop will include rigorous critique to aid in editing, revision and rewriting. Through writing exercises using different authors' work as inspiration, we will explore craft, structure, and point of view. Using weekly writing prompts, participants will incorporate craft techniques for more polished writing. Size limit: 6 minimum, 12 maximum. Fee: $80. Advance online registration and payment required.

Camp Wikoff: A Close Look at Montauk’s Recuperative Encampment for Spanish-American War Combatants

When the Fifth Army Corps, including Roosevelt’s Rough Riders, returned to Montauk in the summer of 1898 following its swift and decisive victories over Spanish forces at Santiago de Cuba in the Spanish-American War, the men were mostly in terrible shape. Jeff Heatley, who told the story of Colonel Theodore Roosevelt, the Rough Riders, and Camp Wikoff in his Book “Bully!” has done extensive research on the camp and Theodore Roosevelt’s role in the war, which made him a hero and paved the way for his political career.

We will explore personal essay, memoir and other types of creative non-fiction. This workshop will include rigorous critique to aid in editing, revision and rewriting. Through writing exercises using different authors' work as inspiration, we will explore craft, structure, and point of view. Using weekly writing prompts, participants will incorporate craft techniques for more polished writing. Size limit: 6 minimum, 12 maximum. Fee: $80. Advance online registration and payment required.
