U.S.-China Relations with Tom Grunfeld
5:30 PM - 6:30 PM

The US-China connection began in 1783 when the Empress of China sailed from New York harbor to China in search of trade. Since then the relationship has gone through many stages of wildly varying degrees of engagement and hostility. Today it is the world’s most important international relationship—and we may be heading for a new Cold War. Since 2016 we have experienced a significant shift in U.S. policy. After 44 years of “engagement,” the Trump Administration has initiated a policy of confrontation arguing that China’s strategic interests are incompatible with those of the United States. This talk will look at the changes in this relationship in a broad historical perspective which most Chinese, but very few Americans, are familiar with. Tom Grunfeld is a SUNY Distinguished Teaching Professor, Emeritus at
Empire State College of the State University of New York who specializes in East Asia.
