Great Decisions: Refugees and Global Migration

Today, no countries have open borders. Every state in today’s global system has its own laws and policies about who is permitted to cross its borders, and how they will do so. Who determines whether someone is a refugee or a migrant? How have different countries, including the United States, reacted to migration? How effective are the international laws, policies and organizations that have evolved to assist and protect refugees and migrants? A debate and discussion among equals produced by The Foreign Policy Association and facilitated by Martin Levinson, Ph.D.

Marilyn Monroe: The Girl, the Woman and the Legend with Marilyn Carminio

Nearly 60 years after her death in 1962, Marilyn Monroe remains an American cultural icon. Mysterious and alluring, she is a study in contrasts: beautiful and sexy yet sweet and vulnerable, sensitive and insecure. Despite a lifelong struggle with mental illness and drug addiction, Marilyn created unforgettable performances in more than 20 movies. Though her life was short and tragic, her star still shines brightly. This visual presentation will tell her story in her own words, through her movies and the recollections of those who knew her.

Herman Melville: Arguably America’s Most Unread, at Times Unreadable, Literary Genius with Joan Baum

2019 marks the bicentennial of Herman Melville's birth. Critic and scholar Joan Baum will celebrate his legacy by exploring some of Melville’s best known work, including Moby Dick, Bartleby the Scrivener, Billy Budd, and less familiar fiction, such as Benito Cereno, and The Confidence Man, his last novel. She will focus on Melville’s diction and syntax as well as his content and heady ideas, and explore why we are still talking about Herman Melville and his Great White Whale after almost 200 years.
