A Visit with Helen Harrison author of An Accidental Corpse

On the night of August 11, 1956, in the East Hampton hamlet of Springs, a tragic accident took the life of Jackson Pollock, the world-renowned abstract painter and notorious alcoholic, whose career was in crisis.  Also killed was Edith Metzger, a passenger in the car Pollock was driving when it plunged into the woods and overturned. At least that’s what the newspapers reported. But Metzger’s autopsy reveals that she was already dead before the crash. This shocking disclosure draws vacationing Captain Brian Fitzgerald of the NYPD and his wife, Detective Juanita Diaz, into a homicide investigation that implicates members of East Hampton’s art community, including Pollock himself.

The Tet Offensive: Lessons from the Vietnam War with Martin H. Levinson, Ph.D.

2018 marked the 50th anniversary of the Tet Offensive, a coordinated series of North Vietnamese attacks on more than 100 cities and outposts in South Vietnam. Though the war would continue for several more years, Tet, with its heavy casualties and shocking news coverage, played a vital part in weakening U.S. public support for the Vietnam War. The American First Lady: Part III with Marilyn Carminio

From 1990 to present, Barbara Bush, Hillary Clinton, Laura Bush, Michelle Obama, and Melania Trump each served as First Lady. They were wives, mothers and confidants to the most powerful men in the world. The Constitution does not assign any responsibilities to this challenging role, sometimes described as the most demanding volunteer job in America. Although not elected, they occupied their own place on the international stage and were often subject to intense public scrutiny. This visual history lecture will highlight the personal side of life in the White House and the unique contributions of these five women.

Great Decisions: Refugees and Global Migration

Today, no countries have open borders. Every state in today’s global system has its own laws and policies about who is permitted to cross its borders, and how they will do so. Who determines whether someone is a refugee or a migrant? How have different countries, including the United States, reacted to migration? How effective are the international laws, policies and organizations that have evolved to assist and protect refugees and migrants? A debate and discussion among equals produced by The Foreign Policy Association and facilitated by Martin Levinson, Ph.D.
