Suffragettes in Corselettes: The Evolution of Underwear & Our 19th Amendment

For centuries, women have allowed themselves to be squeezed, twisted, and squished to conform to desired shapes. The history of underwear reveals a lot about women’s changing roles in society – how we perceive ourselves, and how we’re viewed by others. The 1910s saw an end to the hourglass figure with a tiny waist. Women were finally able to breathe and move more freely. Did the demise of tightlacing help women gain the right to vote in 1920? Underwear matters! Join mother-daughter duo, Velya Jancz-Urban and Ehris Urban for a funny and frank look at our foremothers’ journeys.

Rudolph Valentino: The Great Lover of the Silver Screen with Marilyn Carminio

The name Valentino sent shivers down the spines of American women of the 1920's. Rebellious young women flocked to movie houses and were seduced by the magnetism of the screen's first "Latin Lover." This young man from an obscure Italian village changed the negative stereotyping of Italians in the movies, forever redefining our notions of love and romance. While women adored him, many men despised him as a stealer of hearts. Just in time for Valentine’s Day (the name “Valentino” means “valentine”), you will find out if his appeal is simply nostalgia for the 1920’s or still relevant today.

Min Xiao-Fen’s Blue Pipa Trio From Harlem to Shanghai and Back

Collected from the many regions of China, Ms. Min's compositions are inspired by Chinese folk, regional operas and Taoist music. The pipa master/vocalist/composer from Nanjing and her trio will perform a program which reinterprets the work of legendary jazz trumpeter Buck Clayton, Chinese composer Li Jinhui, Count Basie and Duke Ellington, resulting in a bold cutting-edge Chinese fusion that transcends time and borders. Jazz trumpeter and composer Buck Clayton was a leading member of Count Basie’s Old Testament orchestra, who brought Kansas City Swing to Shanghai in the mid-1930s and worked closely with the father of Chinese popular music, Li Jinhui.  This ushered in a brief era of “Chinese jazz,”  and helped close the gap between American jazz and traditional Chinese music.

Drawdown East End: Oceans & Living Shoreline

Oceans have the capacity to sequester 70% more carbon than the land.  Let’s talk about our own Living Shoreline: coastal wetlands, salt marshes, marine permaculture, and more.  These are the pathways to climate health that are unique and powerful right here in our home towns.
