This is an ongoing advanced writing class for writers who have been writing for a number of years and are ready to go to the next level. Advanced Writing: Creative Non-Fiction with Kara Westerman

This is an ongoing advanced writing class for writers who have been writing for a number of years and are ready to go to the next level. We will explore personal essay, memoir and other types of creative non-fiction. This workshop will include rigorous critique to aid in editing, revision and rewriting. Through writing exercises using different authors' work as inspiration, we will explore craft, structure, and point of view. Using weekly writing prompts, participants will incorporate craft techniques for more polished writing. Size limit: 6 minimum, 12 maximum. Fee: $80. Advance online registration and payment required.

Wintering Birds & How They Survive with Frank Quevedo

Frank Quevedo, executive director of the South Fork Natural History Museum (SoFo) will present a talk on winter birds, followed by a bird walk at Agawam Park. Much of Long Island and the northeast are designated as important wintering areas for migrating birds. Many sparrows, waterfowl and owls visit us during the winter months. This presentation will show what birds they are, where they come from and how they survive severe winter conditions. If you plan on participating in the bird walk, please bring binoculars.

This is an ongoing advanced writing class for writers who have been writing for a number of years and are ready to go to the next level. We will explore personal essay, memoir and other types of creative non-fiction. This workshop will include rigorous critique to aid in editing, revision and rewriting. Meditating On A Riff: How Spirituality Is Changing American Culture

Former New York Daily News columnist Hugh Wyatt will give a talk about how yoga and Buddhism have radically transformed American religion and culture, and will focus on how spirituality is replacing the word religion in modern times. Jazz musicians Sonny Rollins and John Coltrane and rock musicians such as the Beatles have been the leaders of this movement. Mr. Wyatt will also discuss his new book, Sonny Rollins: Meditating on a Riff, which explores the jazz legend’s journey into spirituality and occultism.

The Whaler's World with Connor Flanagan

What was “right” about the Right whale? When was the first recorded whale hunt in Southampton? What was whaling’s importance for the fashion industry? How was a whale’s blubber useful to the whale? To the American consumer? Connor Flanagan, Director of Education at the Southampton History Museum, has looked into every aspect of the industry that started in Southampton in the 17th century and boomed in the 19th. He will answer these questions and more in his presentation focusing on the hunters and the hunted in the great whaling adventure.

Photographer and gallery owner Alfred Stieglitz, whom she would marry two decades later, hosted her first exhibition in1916. Join Ranelle Wolf for a fascinating look at the artist whose iconic images of enlarged flowers, keenly observed cityscapes and the natural surroundings of her New Mexico home revealed her to be a pioneering presence in 20th century American art and the mother of American Modernism.
