Great Decisions: The Rise of Populism in Europe

Mass migration, and the problems associated with it, have directly abetted the rise of populist parties in Europe. Opposition to immigration was the prime driver of support for Brexit, it brought a far-right party to the German Bundestag for the first time since the 1950s, and propelled Marine Le Pen to win a third of the vote in the French presidential election. In addition to calling for stronger borders, however, these parties are invariably illiberal, anti-American, anti-NATO and pro-Kremlin, making their rise a matter of serious concern for the national security interests of the United States. A debate and discussion among equals produced by The Foreign Policy Association and facilitated by Martin Levinson, Ph.D.

How Yoga Changed My Life with Becky Rosko

Becky Rosko took her first yoga class in the late 90s and experienced a new connection between her mind and body, between thoughts and breath. Through ten years of solo and group yoga practice, she became drawn to yoga when she wasn’t feeling her best, and discovered it had become a way to be gentle with her emotions and kind to her body. It became a tool to find a true ‘center’ and explore both hurt and joy. Now for over ten years of teaching, she has felt grateful to be able to share yoga’s benefits — some obvious, some nuanced — with others. Join us for a look at how yoga changed her life and explore how it can change the lives of those who are open to the benefits of this ancient practice.

A Visit with author Tom Clavin

Tom Clavin will return for a talk about his new book Wild Bill: The True Story of the American Frontier’s First Gunfighter. In this entertaining and thorough biography, Clavin digs into the life of legendary gunslinger James Butler “Wild Bill” Hickok. Before he earned his famous moniker, Hickok found success as a Union soldier and spy. The moment that would change the course of his life came in 1865 when his skill with a Colt pistol won him the first recorded quick-draw duel on the American frontier. From that point on, Wild Bill’s reputation as a sharp shooter brought him both opportunity and danger. Bring lunch; we’ll serve lemonade and cookies.

When Mary Pickford Starred in Water Mill with Julie Greene

Who needs Holland? Not the makers of Hulda from Holland, a 1916 silent movie starring Mary Pickford. They found just what they needed in Water Mill where they created their Dutch set around the Hayground Mill. This little-known moment will be the subject of a talk by Southampton Town Historian, Julie Greene, who will remind us of that exciting time when local residents came to watch Mary Pickford and some lucky children from the Hayground School actually got in on the act.

More Tales from the High Seas with Captain Pat Mundus

Last year, Montauk-born Pat Mundus, daughter of legendary shark hunter Frank Mundus, paid us a visit to talk about her journey from being a dock-rat to a deck officer on oil tankers. Her career took her around the world, and this year, Captain Pat will return to talk about boats she’s explored in her travels from classic European yachts, to Indonesian workboats, to racing smacks in the Bahamas, English canal barges and more. Don’t miss an evening of stories that will transport you to exotic places you’ve never been.

A Visit with Wendy Lubovich author of 111 Museums In New York That You Must Not Miss

When most of us think of New York City museums, what comes to mind are The Met, The American Museum of Natural History, or the Whitney. But New York is also home to dozens of fascinating museums catering to a vast range of interests. Join private tour guide, journalist and former news anchor Wendy Lubovich for a talk about how she became inspired to write this book, followed by a guided tour of some of the city’s quirkiest and most compelling, yet little-known, museums. Bring lunch; we’ll serve lemonade and cookies.

Great Decisions: Decoding U.S.-China Trade

Though arguably the most advanced economy in the world, the United States still uses centuries-old numbers to measure trade.  These antique numbers mangle understanding of the U.S.-China trade relationship, shrinking America’s true economic size and competitiveness, while swelling China’s.  Bad numbers give rise to bad policies that ultimately kill U.S. jobs and cede market share to China.  What other tools can the United States employ to counter China’s unfair trade practices?  There are several available, yet they remain mostly unused. A debate and discussion among equals produced by The Foreign Policy Association and facilitated by Martin Levinson, Ph.D.

The Marshall Plan: Dawn of the Cold War with Benn Steil, DPhil

In the wake of World War II, US officials under new secretary of state George C. Marshall set out to reconstruct western Europe as a bulwark against communist authoritarianism. Their massive, costly, and ambitious undertaking would confront Europeans and Americans alike with a vision at odds with their history and self-conceptions. Focusing on the critical years 1947 to 1949, Benn Steil’s account brings to life the seminal episodes marking the collapse of postwar US-Soviet relations—the Prague coup, the Berlin blockade, and the division of Germany. The Wall Street Journal called the book “brilliant” and the New York Times called it “trenchant and timely.” The Marshall Plan was the winner of the 2019 New-York Historical Society Barbara and David Zalaznick Book Prize in American History. Join us for a talk by the author, Benn Steil, DPhil; Senior Fellow and Director of International Economics at the Council on Foreign Relations. Reservations are recommended.

A Visit with Deborah Burns author of Saturday’s Child: A Daughter’s Memoir

Deborah Burns grew up in 1950s America in the shadow of her beautiful and unconventional mother Dorothy, a red-haired beauty who defied norms with a style and flair that made her the darling of men and women alike. As a child, Deborah revered her charismatic mother, a woman with secrets from a troubled past whose love seemed just beyond her daughter’s reach. Saturday’s Child: A Daughter’s Memoir recounts the author’s eccentric upbringing and her quest in midlife, long after the deaths of her parents, to uncover the truth about her mother and their complex relationship.

Remembering Lee Krasner with Ruth Appelhof

In Lee and Me, Ruth Appelhof, Executive Director Emerita of Guild Hall in East Hampton, has written an intimate portrait of the artist Lee Krasner, a task for which she was uniquely qualified. As a young scholar, Ms. Appelhof spent the summer of 1974 with the artist in East Hampton. The two remained friends as Appelhof went on to direct museums across the country, and Krasner produced a major body of work. Ms. Appelhof’s talk will offer a friend’s perspective on Lee Krasner, a woman with a very intense and idiosyncratic personality, as well as a scholar’s informed view of an influential American Abstract Expressionist.
