Read n' Greet Book Club

This months Read n' Greet location is Taj Mahal Restaurant New members welcome!  This ain't your mama's bookclub! We meet once a month to discuss new cutting edge literature in a relaxed environment. We greet, we read, we eat, we drink!

We will be reading The Underwater Welder by Jeff Lemire.

As an underwater welder on an oilrig off the coast of Nova Scotia, Jack Joseph is used to the immense pressures of deep-sea work. Nothing, however, could prepare him for the pressures of impending fatherhood. As Jack dives deeper and deeper, he seems to pull further and further away from his young wife and their unborn son. But then, something happens deep on the ocean floor. Jack has a strange and mind-bending encounter that will change the course of his life forever!

Equal parts blue-collar character study and mind-bending science fiction epic, The Underwater Welder explores fathers and sons, birth and death, memory and truth, and the treasures we all bury deep down inside.

LOCATION: Taj Mahal Restaurant, 142 Clinton St
There are 3 spaces available.

Polishing The Pearls-Memoir Writing Workshop

Hidden within you are the stories you have always wanted to write. This series of three non-fiction writing workshops is open to all who wish to pursue their own personal narrative, regardless of their level of writing experience. Everyone has a unique way to tell his or her story, and participants will have a chance to mine memories of their lives, drawing inspiration from memory exercises, free-writing, and photographs. In this safe and supportive setting, you will transform moments and experiences that you almost forgot you had until you were able to bring form and insight to them. We will gently support each other’s growth in this endeavor to generate and share writing.  Presented by Marea Gordett.

Marea Gordett taught in the English departments of Boston University and Tufts University for many years, and she now conducts literary programs at libraries, museums and professional organizations. She is a poet and non-fiction writer and has published a book of poetry entitled Freeze Tag with Wesleyan University Press. She has been awarded the Pushcart Prize, the "Discovery"/The Nation award, and numerous grants from the New York State Council on the Arts and Poets & Writers. She runs Big Mind Learning in the Capital region. Ages 18+

Join us for a discussion of the book Girl in Hyacinth Blue by Susan Vreeland. New book club members are always welcome. Request a copy of the books online or at any SCPL location.

The artistic journey Vreeland recounts begins in present-day Pennsylvania, where a schoolteacher claims he owns an authentic Vermeer, a legacy from his late father, who acquired it under heinous circumstances: a Nazi officer, the father had looted it from the home of Dutch Jews. Moving back in time and across the Atlantic, Vreeland traces the treasured painting from owner to owner. In doing so, she demonstrates the enduring power of art in the face of natural disaster, political upheaval, and personal turmoil.

Join us for a discussion of the book Year of Wonders by Geraldine Brooks. New book club members are always welcome. Request a copy of the books online or at any SCPL location.

This gripping historical novel is based on the true story of Eyam, the "Plague Village," in the rugged mountain spine of England. In 1666, a tainted bolt of cloth from London carries bubonic infection to this isolated settlement of shepherds and lead miners. A visionary young preacher convinces the villagers to seal themselves off in a deadly quarantine to prevent the spread of disease. The story is told through the eyes of eighteen-year-old Anna Frith, the vicar's maid, as she confronts the loss of her family, the disintegration of her community, and the lure of a dangerous and illicit love. As the death toll rises and people turn from prayers and herbal cures to sorcery and murderous witch-hunting, Anna emerges as an unlikely and courageous heroine in the village's desperate fight to save itself.

Writing for Wellness

This workshop is designed to help participants learn how to use writing as a tool for coping, deeper insight and expression.  In each workshop, participants are invited to engage in a series of writing activities that are pragmatic and expressive: exercises that they can continue to use long after the workshop is over, for their own growth and development. The workshops are lively, with varied exercises and lots of time for discussion to process how the activities worked for the participants and how they might be expanded upon or adapted for their private use.

Participants are encouraged to keep journals, which we will start using immediately. At the beginning we will talk a little about the research surrounding using writing as a wellness tool, as a way of providing evidence and context for how effective writing can be as a tool.  Participants will be invited to share their thoughts and writing, but will not be expected to share anything that feels too personal.

Taught by Elaine Handley

Ages 18+

This 3 week long workshop meets once per week

LOCATION: Quaker Street Branch
There are 11 spaces available.

Join us for a discussion of the book After the Eclipse: a Mother's Murder, a Daughter's Search by Sarah Perry New book club members are always welcome. Request a copy of the books online or at any SCPL location.

"When Perry was 12, her mother, Crystal, was murdered in their home in rural Maine, outside Perry’s bedroom. Her riveting memoir navigates the absences, silences, and solitudes that follow trauma. Perry, who now lives in Brooklyn and was the publisher of Columbia: A Journal of Literature and Art, wonderfully evokes her mother even as she struggles to unravel the mystery of her death. In the 12 years between Crystal’s murder and the killer’s conviction, Perry tried to move forward, even as she faced police interrogations and scrutiny from officers who believed she remembered more from the night than she was telling. Perry reveals a family shattered in the wake of tragedy. She was shuttled among relatives and friends, living in Texas and then in Maine again, where she worried the killer still lived, haunting her small-town streets. Perry vividly portrays her mother, and she introduces the troubled men in her mother’s life: her estranged husband, Tom; her ex-boyfriends Dale and Tim; and her fiancé, Dennis. Other men and women move in this circle, all with secrets of their own, such as Teresa, Tom’s new girlfriend. Perry’s memoir is a testament to one child’s ability to survive the unspeakable, one woman’s ability to recapture what was lost, and a fascinating small-town mystery with breathtaking revelations at the end. (Sept.)" --Staff (Reviewed 07/24/2017) (Publishers Weekly, vol 264, issue 30, p)
